My Writing Experience: Mandatory For High School Classes
My writing experiences are close to none. The only essays I have written have been mandatory for high school classes. I don’t think I have written a paper since I graduated high school in 2009. While in high school I only wrote essay when I absolutely had to. My entire life I have struggled at being a successful writer. My vocabulary is small because I don’t read very many books. In fact, I hardly ever read. I only read when required to read for school, or if it’s a recipe or directions. Its not that I am too busy to read or just don’t want to, reading is very difficult for me. I do not comprehend anything I read. I have learned that when you don’t read you can’t build your vocabulary. Part of my problem when I am reading is that I can’t

In the article, “Why So Many College Students Are Lousy at Writing--And How Mr. Miyagi Can Help," John Maguire gives his views to the Washington Post. John Maguire’s goal of this article is to change the audience’s mind and have them take action. Maguire would like to see the curriculum changed to starting with basic writing behaviors one at a time. Along with doing that, they should also implement courses, where they assume students know nothing about writing and work their way up from there. Throughout the article, he repeats that professors assume college students know how to properly write a paper, while in fact, they don’t know how to write a proper sentence. Maguire also states that professors or their teaching assistants need to “trick”…

As a writer, I believe I have several strengths as well as challenges. Beginning with my strengths, I believe I have a passion for writing. When I write I make it easy to follow my train of thought from simple word selection to more complex thoughts. I also have my topics organized in a pattern designed for an easy flow from start to finish of what is written. While I strive to keep it simple, sometimes I have to get creative to capture and keep my readers attention. For my challenges, I believe my limited vocabulary may be a problem along with thoughts that do not convey any useful information. In order to improve my writing skills, I have to read, re-read, and re-read again to make sure I stick to the topic at hand.…

The Wichita Kid from “The Gunfighter” by Alden Nowlan and a young man living on the streets of Calgary both demonstrate that we fear what we do not understand. Citizens need to personally comprehend someones situation before they can help or judge them directly. Homelessness and poverty are often hard situations to face considering how uncomfortable and awkward it can become. When Kevin O’Brien has a short conversation with Wichita he learns that he is unaware of reality and living his delusional life as a famous gunfighter. Confused and not understanding Wichita’s situation, Kevin tries to solve his own guilt by lending the young boy some spare change. Much like Kevin O’Brien when I encountered the young unfortunate man in Calgary my own heart ached, so I tossed him a couple of loonies and left. Although you feel major misery there is rarely anything you can do to support them without getting deeply involved.…

I think I have all the tools needed, such as a vivid open mind, but I lack the knowledge of using those tools, especially when I have very little time to write. Through Advanced Composition my writing skills have grown immensely. I have become a more vibrant and expressive writer while still being aware of the subtle nuances of grammar and mechanics. I learned how to view writing as a process, rather than just a goal. I wrote a personal memoir about a game of chess I once played with a friend(Benchmark #1). In this paper, I learned how the value of outlining, and listing as part of the writing process. I had to approach a mediocre story with a fresh new perspective.…

Writing in journals for class or writing stories for entertainment proved to be great fun. The writing level of elementary and middle school was easy to learn and work with. Arriving in high school, I felt confident in my writing skills. High school level writing proved to be more challenging. After English I, I felt unprepared for the rest of my high school writing experience. I grew to become uninterested in writing for the next two years. I procrastinated finishing any writing assignment I was given. Though I received decent grades on my assignments, I could have received better grades had I not procrastinated writing my assignments. My attitude toward writing has changed from disinterested to excited with my Composition I and II classes. I have learned much in the first semester of this course and I have grown to enjoy writing again because of this…

My writing process has always been a frustrating one. I like writing, but I don't think I'm very good at it. When I was younger, I loved letting my creative side shine by writing silly stories and pretending I was Stephen King, using words that I didn't even understand. My dad read me Shel Silverstein's books of poems and and drawings. Those books inspired me so much to write and to draw and be creative on a blank sheet of paper.…

As a transfer student going on the pre-med route, making sure that I’m on track to complete both my degree requirements and the prerequisites for medical school remains a constant challenge. My major in neuroscience is already course intensive and combined with my premed requirements, it becomes very hard to find space in my schedule to take classes in areas I would like to explore. Furthermore, since I’ll be going into my junior year without having yet completed my first year writing requirement, the need for summer classes is made ever more prevalent. Having said that, I would really like to take this summer to not only complete my first year writing requirement but also invest my time in one of the more difficult pre-medical courses such as biochemistry. In doing so, I will be able to allocate more of my effort into focusing on the educational process. Not to mention,…

Starting off my first semester of college I didn't know what to expect, the first day felt like the first day of high school all over again. With graduation over and the first day of college over, high school was just like college. When entering my reading class it reminded me of my senior writing class but with a twist of personality. What I learned in reading class this semester was more of a review of my senior writing and reading class combined. I enjoyed learning about both topics because it would help my vocab in the essays I would have to write. The thing I liked most about this class was that I had a lot of knowledge about the topic when starting. I knew what we were talking about so it made it more joyful to learn about the subject…
