My Voice Reflective Account
INTRODUCTION:
As someone interested in working in the theatre industry, it is vital that I am aware of how my voice, as an instrument at my disposal, is able to be utilised and manipulated in order to work effectively, healthily and to its full potential. To be in a position where this is possible, I must first take ownership of my voice and identify key aspects and characteristics of it. Furthermore, I must be able to recognise influential factors on my voice including significant events and relationships that have shaped my voice and the impact my voice has on my daily life and acting. Finally, I must be able to ascertain any vocal habits, tensions or issues that exist and their origins as well as possible methods of elimination. This is

Relationship with Dad – Volume
The relationship I have with my father has been instrumental in influencing the volume at which I speak. As a child, my father gave me the nickname ‘foghorn’ as a reference to how loud I would talk. This has caused a great sensitivity to the subject and I have hence acquired a level of control over it and attempt to subdue its volume. The volume of my voice is a major insecurity of mine and has led to a very conscious level of control over it.

2. Relationship with Mum - Quality
My relationship with my mother has also been influential on my voice and in particular the quality of my voice. My mother has quite a calming voice as she is a sympathetic person. Growing up with her has led to my adoption of a calming voice as well as my sympathetic personality. Similarly, as quite a cheerful person, my mothers voice reflects such quality and has been passed down to me with my voice sharing this effervescent quality

Career Aspiration – Word-choice and Articulation (2:11 of Recording 7 as example)
For many years, my career aspiration has been to become a teacher of drama and english. As a long-term goal, I have taken many steps to ensure that I have qualities what align with such work. Thus I have made the conscious effort to broaden my vocabulary in order to be considered sophisticated and intelligent. Also originating from my desire to become a teacher is my articulation as I wish to be quite sophisticated and clear in order to be respected and easily understood.

4. American Accent – Pronunciation
Quite an iconic part of my vocal history is the development of an American accent during my eleventh year of schooling. Due to the submersion in American media content, I unconsciously adopted an American accent. I would often have others comment on and question my accent and it required a fair amount of work to become consciously aware of it. Over time, it began to fade as I became more aware of it due to this sensitivity. Whilst I no longer have this accent, it is a very unique trait that my voice did adopt and has influenced my pronunciation to this day.

The voice is a person's own unique musical instrument. Someone can compare a person's voice to the sound of a violin which have their own unique structures to aide in creating the sound of pitch, frequency, loudness, and specific notes. A violin's body is like a human's body in that it holds all the parts and structures together, and each structure has a role. Tightening the strings at the peg box creates more tension, and when played, a higher frequency or pitch occurs. The violin strings are similar to a person's vocal folds because they are held together by the peg box and bridge, creating tension in the strings.…

I was born in Leicester. People in Leicester have a very distinct accent and dialect and during my short period there, I collected many of these features as my own. Ends of sentences would be punctuated with “luv” or “duck” and “good food!” became “bostin’ fittle!” Due to unfortunate circumstances, I was adopted at the age of three and I moved into a completely different society. I was with Southerners. Whereas people from the midlands would talk about “lampin’” the guy that looked at them oddly, down here they would use fancy words like “injunction” and “lawsuit”. I was completely out of my comfort zone. The South has always been associated with wealth and the middle class and me, with my Midlands tendencies, could not adjust for quite a while.…

First there was the main character, Jack Kelly, charismatic, cocky, street-smart newspaper delivery boy. The actor playing Jack spoke and sung with a New York street accent that was noticeable, but not so thick that you could not understand him; when he sang, his tone was a little bit brighter than some of the other characters, showing his character’s charm and outgoing nature, but sometimes, particularly during numbers like “Santa Fe” and “Something to Believe In”, it was softer, revealing a softer side to the character. Going along with the New York accent, the actor sometimes let his vowels get wide or flat, or clipped the ends of his words, to show his character’s lack of sophistication. Whenever he sang, you could feel the emotion and passion oozing from the actor. A very different character was Jack’s friend *David, an educated, polite boy who only started selling newspapers when his father had to stop working due to an injury. The actor playing David sang and spoke with a softer, more reserved color, but there was still strength to his sound. He is the primary singer of the number “Seize the Day,” for instance, a perfect example of this unique tone color – very strong and intense, but never too loud or belting. , there was Jack’s love interest, feisty reporter Katherine Plumber. Katherine’s was the one voice I was not totally onboard with. I just was not…

When I started my work placement at my setting I was working with my members of staff and manager who told me how to monitor children when they eat and which child cannot eat certain food because of their religion or culture. Before I started to give out the food for the children I had to read the food policies and procedures to know how to serve the food and drink for the children. At my placement I learnt how to monitor the children when they ate and how much they ate, and also about their allergies. I had to monitor how much the children drink and I had to make sure that they drink enough water or milk.…

    Goffman's Performance

In his aptly titled work, The Presentation of Self In Everyday Life, sociologist Erving Goffman analyses human identity construction and interactionism through the generous use of dramaturgical metaphors[1]. Published in 1959, just before the sociological revolution of the 1960's, Goffman's analysis of human behaviour nonetheless remains relevant in the digital age. The cornerstone of Goffman's study of human behaviour is the idea of the 'performance'. Goffman postulates that individual interactions are performances; carefully designed to 'project' a specific image to the second party, hoping to establish a favourable impression. Goffman opines that all human interactions are merely performances or acts - made by actors and delivered to an…

An element of the craft of acting that is an important aspect when performing is voice. Voice can set the mood and tone of for an actor through dialogue and can enhance their overall performance. This was evident in Travis Hennessy’s (Alain) performance. He had a controlled and a well-established vocal control, especially in the area of projection. Projection is vital to ensuring that a play is heard and understood, without projection a play becomes arduous to hear and the audience become disgruntled. Regardless of whether he was engaged in a quiet phone conversation or yelling at other characters with vexation, Hennessy spoke with clarity and consistently projected his voice to the back row of the audience. When using his inside voice, Hennessy still projected it competently. However, Georgie Todman’s (Annette) projection was muted by her posture on the stage. On several occasions in the beginning of the play, Todman was staring at the ground when speaking. As her character was not naturally loud, her words were…

Throughout this controlled assessment, I have noticed that I use different accents in different context. When I speak to my family and friends, I change my accent when having a conversation with them in English. Which is made apparent when I pronounce: “what else did you have just pizza and nothing else?” in a different accent on transcript 2. This is because I am of Bangladeshi ethnicity which has influenced the way I pronounce words. I may purposely speak in a Bangladeshi accent if I am being sarcastic, or to create humour with friends and others. My friends find my Bangladeshi accent funny because they think I sound like Raj Koothrappali, a character on the Big Bang Theory, who is from India. In addition, it makes me speak in a unique way in my social group, and this is due to the fact that most of my friends speak with a southern accent. On the contrary, I have noticed some people mostly within my social group try to imitate my accent, as they find what I said is: “funny” and/or “cool”. Although, I was born in east London I have little similarity in accent with east Londoners because I spent most of my childhood in the south, even though I use to go London on most weekends and holidays as many of my family live there. This is shown in transcript 2, when I say: “I’m doing good, thank you”, which I pronounce in a southern accent. However, I am often criticized for sounding “too posh” by my extended family, as I have a mainly southern accent. In other contexts, such as speaking with educated and respectable people, I try to speak in Received Pronunciation (RP), thus I sound good because RP is associated with respectable, educated, and well off people of society. On the other hand, I use my regional accent as a way of gaining covert prestige context when in informal contexts, such as having a conversation with a friend. This indicates I am trying to come across as rebellious and independent, or trustworthy and down-to-earth. Also, I do this due to the fact…
