My Ukulele Experience
There are many things out there that I would like to do that I have never done before. Consequently, I had to choose something that would inspire me and my classmates. I chose the ukulele because it was something that I had always wanted to learn. During the ten hours of learning the magnificent instrument, I encountered many “aha!” moments. Although I am only required to practice playing it for ten hours now, I believe I will use it later in life. At first, I had no idea what I was going to do for my project. I thought about doing something simple and easy like writing with my other hand. However, I decided I should do something that I actually wanted to do and learn. I have always had a desire to learn the guitar but because I could not afford a guitar or guitar lessons, I went with a ukulele instead. Fortunately, a ukulele would be easier to learn and was in my price range. Now that I knew what I was going to do, it was time to start my project. …show more content…
I did not have much money to go and buy one at an expensive music store, so I went ahead and looked on amazon. Thankfully, I found one that was only thirty-five dollars and it included a case, extra strings, instruction booklet, and instruction video. It was perfect! When it finally arrived at my house, I knew I had made the right decision. I enjoyed strumming the strings and listening to the sound each one made. Later in the learning process, I encountered one major “aha” moment. This happened when I was trying to learn the song “Riptide” by Vance Joy and I was unable to do the strumming correctly. Getting very frustrated, I rewatched the tutorial one more time. Right when I was about to give up, I tried one more time and I finally did it correctly. I was able to do it again and again. All of a sudden everything clicked and I realized it wasn’t so hard after all. Of course I still made plenty of mistakes, but I got the general idea of the rhythm and strum

My only contribution to the pit on that day was an interpolation of dissonance which made me cringe as if I had scraped my nails on a chalkboard. Consequently, I resolved myself to catch up with the rest of the orchestra members to avoid making a fool out of myself again. I began to visit the practice rooms frequently: during free periods, lunches, after school, before and after rehearsals. In Practice Room C, I open the book “Keyboard 2” and peruse the sheet before playing. The page is titled “4A. Rain.” To my dismay, there is a lot of black on it. I begin. The tumultuous cascades of black ink line up and become chromatic scales that fit perfectly under my fingers. The hundreds of indiscernible dots staining the page start to reposition themselves into orderly, distinctive chords. Thankfully, the tedious drills I did in my youth expedited my learning of new repertoire. “By opening night, the pit had polished up its schtick. During the performance, an opinion had formed at the back of my mind: “This sounds amazing. I wouldn’t mind doing this for the rest of my life.” This revelation led me to conclude that if you persevere through things you hate, the experience gained from doing that will build upon itself and…

Having spent three years at Columbus High School, I was ready for senior year to begin. However, I was not ready to endure the harsh reality of completing the obligatory senior project. In order to graduate from Columbus High School, it is mandatory to complete over one hundred hours learning a new skill, called senior project, which consisted of four different phases. At the end of my junior year, the principal, Dr. Crumbs, called us all into an assembly to discuss the requirements for senior project, and he told us to go ahead and start thinking about which skill we would like to learn. He had mentioned how students previously learned the skill of the acoustic guitar. I was determined to pick a skill that I was particularly fascinated by,…

Something that has inspired me to create is music. Music has this power that helps you connect with your thoughts and emotions. Over the years I have learned to play two instruments fluently, flute and ukulele. I started playing flute in 2010 when I joined my school’s band and learned how to play from my band teacher, Michelle Metzger. For my thirteenth birthday…

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve observed people playing music around me. My family is musically inclined, which I believe is the reason I’ve been drawn to it. In 2006, I began taking guitar lessons but I never had much interest in playing. Things changed in 2009, and I wished to be different. I wanted to be good at something so I began to teach myself guitar and have stuck with the guitar until now. In 2010, I began to play on my church’s worship team and I enjoyed it very much. I have now been a worship leader for the past four years and it’s something I love to do. I love it so much that for the past two years I have gone to Camp Electric to improve my skills. Camp Electric is a rock and roll music camp where musicians pick an instrument and they participate in workshops with that instrument. This camp is filled with people who love music and who love playing music. I have such a passion for playing that I have begun teaching guitar lessons and now I am expressing music with my patients in order to achieve a goal.…

There have been numerous times in my life where I’ve failed at something but there was one specific failure that really opened my eyes to what it really meant to fail. When I was in high school, I was in the band, my instrument of choice was the saxophone. While in the band it is required that you learn your sheet music before you attend any school event. This is to ensure that everyone is doing their absolute best and will make cuts to perform in every function the band was asked to participate. As I mentioned earlier, I played the saxophone and had always made cuts until one day our band instructor issued out new music. Being the person I am, I glanced at the music and said “I see no need for me to practice this, it’s so simple”. Later that…

When I was starting out with my musical career, I never imaged I’d see myself six years later placing 2nd in all-state wind ensemble. Wind Ensemble was tough, it took a lot of commitment, but in the end, the reward was so much more than I could have wished for.…

A couple weeks went by and I practiced and perfected 3 out of 4 pieces. Then, came the struggle. I had finally reached the last piece, Toccata, and this piece was extremely difficult. I tried everything from YouTube videos to practicing for 2 hours straight, but nothing worked. Every time I played, the rhythms and notes got scrambled, my bow was squeaky, and my notes were out of tune. I was close to giving up, thinking that I would fail and never master the piece. Then as I was packing up my instrument I reminded myself of all the hard work I put in prior to this day. I was determined to learn this piece!…

So this project is really a breath of fresh air to me. This has been an eye opener, a bell that wakes every vein in my body, like electricity that flows to my brain that shocks every synaptic activity. Singing in the choir, learning from the drummers and organ players I fell in love with the different grooves and sounds of different instruments. I joined percussion in junior high and with countless hours of practice and lots of tough love from Mr. Jones, my percussion instructor, I learned and practiced with about 20 instruments. The switch between instruments was almost like second nature earning me first chair in a class of about 40. Once in high school I began looking for a way to turn doing what I love into a career and my interest in music producing and engineering grew into a burning passion. Working with different artists and learning how to produce, mix and master vocals with various softwares, using different midi controllers, plugins etc has taught me many different ways to find sounds i like and turn them into art. Receiving recognition that thousands of human beings have taken the time out of their day to listen the art that you created is the best feelings in the world. Giving people something to relate to by painting a lyrical picture from a blank canvas is immortal. Henceforth after hours of online research I decided to try and take my skills and elevate them to a level where they are needed in society as a vital piece of the vastly growing music…

The summer of my freshman year in high school, I received the opportunity to go to a flute camp at Cal. State Long Beach, where I attended a weeklong session of classes and practices. I met other students doing the exact same thing as me, and from that point on life took on a very different perspective. I gained consciousness about the bigger world that existed beyond what was in front of me, not just the simple things in the textbook or what the teacher taught in class, but concepts yet undiscovered and many more collaborative efforts to experience. I dedicated myself to hard work and began to perform with a range of groups equally diverse in styles, and experiment with music of a wide spectrum, while the world of academia became a playground of knowledge. I am now heading into my senior year of undergraduate studies, looking forward to pursuing further music studies at the graduate level, and I am happy to say I do not regret nagging my parents for that CD, and I can confidently say, neither do…

I was thirteen when I met my first guitar teacher. His name was Carleton; he was friendly, and his years of being a guitarist showed through the callouses on his fingertips. I, by my extensive vocabulary, would have called him a “pretty cool guy.” He knew all about the technical aspects of the guitar, he taught me various chords, how to read sheet music, and how to play. However, more important to me was his own love for playing, which led to my obsession with music. If thirteen-year-old me had never walked into that studio then music would not be the driving force of my life, and I would not be an artist.…
