My Time in Heaven Letter
June 20’ 12
Dear Richard Sigmund,

My name is Kimberly I’m fifteen years old and I bought your book “ My Time in Heaven” yesterday (June 19’ 12). I got the idea to start reading books about people dying and coming back life after the day that I went to the carnival last week. I went to the carnival with my family and on my way back home we started to talk about how if you play a song backwards you hear another message. Its called backmasking. If you don’t know what it means I’d rather you look it up on google than me explain it to you because I’m not good with explaining. After speaking about that my somewhat aunt said that we needed to watch what we listened to because those are devilish songs and if we were to die the next minute or even second we would be sent to hell for listening to the devilish songs. Singers like Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Lady Gaga all have those subliminal messages in them. Saying to kill and lean on them and saying that they were rich and beautiful because they worship Lucifer. Then my aunt started to say how she saw this video on YouTube of this lady that died and came back to life. She was taken to hell to see what it was like and to warn the people up on earth. She said that she had seen the pope, Michael Jackson and Selena (the Spanish singer that died long time ago). Selena had told her that every time they play her songs up on earth, the demons beat her. I got interested all of this. I didn’t and don’t want to hell. I didn’t think that it was that bad. After I heard that people are set on fire and all those things you mentioned in the book I wanted to do all little more research about heaven and hell. I went to Barnes N’ Noble yesterday and went to the religion section and such a book of books. Out of all the books I saw I only saw two books that talk about someone dying, seeing heaven and hell, and coming back to life. Before hearing about all this hell and heaven things that you described in the book, I didn’t really

In the sermon, “Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God,” Jonathan Edwards utilizes imagery as one of the rhetorical devices in order to scare his audience back to the pious ways of the first generation Puritans. Edwards’ vivid descriptions of hell and eternal torment are examples of the emotional appeal pathos. He uses figurative language including metaphors, similes, and personification to illustrate this unfortunate scenario in the minds of his listeners. For example, Edwards’ states, “The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them, and would fain lay hold on them, and swallow them up…” (8-10). In this example the audience can clearly imagine the horrors of hell, which encourages them to look to God for salvation, thus also making use of logos as the audience rationalizes and considers the situation. Hell is described as a “world of misery, that lake of burning brimstone…” (19-10), among many other things. The speaker/writer’s depictions of hell work to keep the audience members on their toes so they remember what they are doomed for if they dare to stray further from the Church or anger God even more than they have already done so. The rich imagery in this sermon is significant to the uniqueness of the piece because Edwards’ uses this literary device to scare the audience into compliance, and it serves as a main support for the author’s overall purpose, which is to get people to solidify ties to the…

I love you and miss you very much. Another cold night and hot day in the books. I finally got to take a shower yesterday. I can’t believe how dirty it is out here. I imagine it will only get worse. I've met all kinds of interesting folks from all over the States. I play checkers with an Italian guy from Connecticut and I met a black guy from Monroe, Louisiana. Sometimes we play ping-pong and cards to pass the time.…

With the thought of Hell comes the spine-chilling red devil with instruments of torture, shrill screams of pain, and an encompassing, sweltering heat. Jean Paul Sartre proves in his play, No Exit, that Hell is not this petrifying scenario that is so popularized, but that Hell is simply other people. He uses metaphors to prove that the characters lose their sense of selves in hell, and have no other way to look at themselves except through the other people present.…

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis gives the reader a new perspective on hell and life after death. Written in the demons point of view, a new light is shed on the amount of work put in to tempting humans into hell. Zeroing in on the struggles and conflicts humans go through on a day to day basis, Lewis is able to make his novel timeless for all generations past and here to come. Though it is not exactly clear why Lewis ended the novel with such a broad idea, The Screwtape Letters offers much insight and life lessons.…

Robert Herrick, an English poet, once said, “Hell is no other but a soundlesse pit, where no one beame of comfort peeps in it.” Picture any type of Hell with relief, happiness, or even the smallest crack of a smile. There is no place. In fact, one can only think of the complete opposite, whether it is a Hell filled with neglect, pain, disgust, or a never-ending life of horror. This is the place created by Dante Alighieri; The Inferno is exactly the type of Hell where no person would want to be. Even those who acted upon the lightest of sins suffered greatly. While each realm contained a different sinner, the punishment that each were forced to face was cruel, repulsive, and sometimes rather disgusting. Through grieving tears without an exit, unbearably itchy scabs, and a putrid, slushy ground, Dante uses vivid imagery to describe the various realms of Hell.…

Whether or not there is a doomed afterlife in which is called “hell”, everybody has their own perception of what their “hell” would be like. Rather your view of hell is eternal detonation or a place consisting of deathly flames and Satan’s head down in a bucket of ice, most people do not wish to be summoned into the depths of hell. However; Jonathon Edward’s sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” portrays briefly the vivid imagery of how hell was represented during the Second Great Awakening. In addition, Edwards aim was to teach his listeners about the horror of hell. Thus, Edwards’s dramatic interpretation of hell frightened the people who followed by God’s word and urges those who don’t to call upon Christ to receive forgiveness.…

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom is a very good, insightful, and thought provoking book, and it’s main character, Eddie, made the book even more interesting. He has traits that are very present in the book; such as being kind-hearted, hard working, patient, and accepting. Eddie’s patience shines through when, in the middle of the book, he liked this girl but was patient in waiting for her. Eventually, she became his wife. Eddie also worked the same job for over 30 years, that he knew would get him nowhere in life, but would support him. This job was at an amusement park, Ruby Pier, just doing maintenance, and making sure the park ran smoothly. It was a very tedious job, doing the same things every day, every week, every year, unchanging except for the types of rides he had to maintain. Eddie worked as carnival maintenance from the time he got out of the military and his father died, right up until his own death. (His death was actually on the job.) Patience was a great trait for him to possess; when he arrived in heaven, Eddie had the time of forever on his hands.…
