My Summary of the Good Life
The Good life can be interpreted in many ways by various people. It is pondered by every individual and can be discussed and analyzed in different ways. The following texts have shown me a very different perspective to the good life. One that I would of never thought I would have. Every person can come to their own decisions to define the good life. I believe after one reads the chosen texts, one will have a better understanding and can determine specific arguments and reasons for their beliefs.

Aristotle claims at the beginning that a person’s whole life is included both on earth and in heaven. When a person is in heaven, we can determine whether their life was in fact, a good life. This is his personal opinion but I believe one can only decide for themselves if they are living the ‘good’ way. Aristotle brings up the eudemonia theory which I translated to supreme happiness. I agree with Aristotle when he claims that Happiness is the ultimate telos (end) because there is no further telos beyond happiness and our ultimate goal to all activities is to be happy. This is an idea that everybody can relate to. We are all striving for happiness and the good. Most people, like my belief previously, would think of happiness as a physical pleasure or honor and this constitutes an imperfect view of the good life. Aristotle explains that one must be taught about the virtuous life and explain it whilst promoting it. Somewhat practicing goodness. My opinion is now, very similar to Aristotle. Happiness cannot be placed on material things. It is a matter of setting a goal and looking past the superficial things that stand in the way.

The Gorgias by Plato is a detailed study of virtue whilst inquiring into a number of subjects. Plato contemplates about what is the worst wrong a person can commit. He determines that committing wrong is worse, since it is more shameful, therefore evil. He also tries to determine what evil is the worst for a person to perform. Keeping in mind

    Aristotle doesn’t think that happiness is something that comes and goes continuously, he sees happiness as a goal in ones life or the ultimate value of ones life so far. “Verbally there is a very general agreement; for both the general run of men and people of superior refinement say that it is happiness, and identify living well and doing well with being happy; but with regard to what happiness is they differ, and the many do not give the same account as the wise” (Nicomachean Ethics, 4). Aristotle finds that only the wise know what true happiness is and it has to do with doing well for oneself, which can be interpreted differently from person to person. There is no exact thing Aristotle is relating to doing well, it’s more like one personally sets a goal or decides whether their life is good which translates into happiness. Maybe what Aristotle is saying isn’t that one will be continually happy with the position they are in in their life, but that one will be content with how their life is going and accept it, as in happiness depends on what a person does to make themselves happy. According to the text a full functioning completely happy person will be mentally, physically, spiritually, financially, professionally, creatively, and socially healthy & well rounded individual. Happiness involves being really alive and not just existing. Aristotle believes that a person should work hard doing what they love, they also shouldn’t devote their lives to acquiring riches since riches don’t provide happiness.     It is clear that Aristotle thinks happiness is what every human desires. He defines happiness as the highest good (Ethics 1095a), which by definition every person pursues as an ultimate end (1094a). Furthermore, he says that happiness can only be achieved through fulfillment of our characteristic activity, which is the thing that something does which makes it be that thing; for example, the characteristic activity of a flute-player is playing the flute. The good of anything with a characteristic activity is to perform that activity well (1097b).     Aristotle’s “Nicomachean Ethics” considers the best way to achieve happiness. In every human action, the individual intends for it to end in some type of good, with most of these activities being means to a higher end. Aristotle addresses two types of goods, those of which are subordinate and those of which result in higher ends.
