My Specific Fear
ecA very good evening to everyone. Thank you for being here today. My name is Ng Shin Kin, also known as SK. As you all are aware, I’m here to present to you about my specific fear.
Fear, the mere sight of the word makes us cringe. It is a feeling we have all dealt with at one time or another. It is a feeling that we first experience when we are small, and are conditioned to respond to in many different ways. Some of us live in constant fear; of accidents, of bad people doing us harm, or of physical ailments. Everybody in the world which we reside has a fear of something, including me. The specific fear of mine is the moment when I have to cross the road, technical word in psychiatry is Agyrophobia. I found that I have this specific fear two years ago after an accident.
Two years ago, which is year 2010, after my class has ended, I was on my way to the tuition centre which is within walking distance from my school. As usual, I go there by walking. When I was about to cross the road, a Honda MVP appeared out of sudden from the junction and came to me in high speed. Being unable to avoid it, and with the driver slowing down the car, my left feet was trapped under the front wheel when the car has stopped. The driver then moved the car to release my feet. With the help of my tuition teacher and a best friend of mine, I was admitted into the hospital. I was the lucky as I was told by doctor that only my artery was injured, but not my bone. Later that day, I was discharged with swollen left feet and a pair of walking sticks.
Since that day, I realized that I fear of crossing the road. I take more time to cross the road in fear of a suddenly appeared car. I need to cross the road with my friends, family or the crowd as in this way, I feel secured. Until today I am still on my way in overcoming the fear. I hope I can overcome my fear in the near future. That’s all for my presentation about the specific fear of mine. Thank you and have a nice day.

“The only thing you should fear is fear itself.” Well, that and many other things. I found myself itinerating around the campus of Niagara County Community College on March 14th, 2016 curious how realistic fears play a part in our daily life. Let me make this clear, it was very difficult discovering what type of questions to ask and how one would portray them. The questions I asked were: “What comes to your mind when you hear the word fear, What’s your most realistic fear, One word to describe this fear, and how this fear represents you as an individual.” I kept reminiscing the thought who are the right people for this and then it hit me; student athletes.…

Fear. An emotion we all dread to experience. The definition itself sounds unpleasant, “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat’ (Merriam-Webster). Danger, pain, and threat, these aren’t words that would attract most people to an experience. Fears come in all shapes and sizes, even animals have fears, it’s a basic instinct that all creatures have to identify threats in order to survive. Without fears we would not be able to process what causes us harm and we would not survive very long. The fear of fire is what tells us that fire is harmful when we touch it and the fear of falling is what tells us jumping off the top of the Empire State building isn’t the best idea.…
