My Shyness
Shyness is the enemy to the person wanting to learn English. I remember as far back as 7 years old, some of the stuff I used to do avoid seeing people that came to visit us. ¬¬They were people I knew, like cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends of the family. ¬ ¬I was trying to stay into my room until they took off, except for some cases, for example, that I have to take a leak. As I grew up, things got better, but I have still a long way to go.
Do you presently consider yourself to be a shy person? If you answered "no," was there ever a period in your life during which you considered yourself to be a shy person? Probably yes, I guess. I know that the prevalence of shyness varies from culture to culture and with different types of people. ¬ ¬Nevertheless, I dare to say that, at least, everyone must have a experience making them embarrassed, blush, or sweat in their life. That can happen especially to those having a language problem like me. For a long time, one of the bad habits I have is to pretend to understand even if I really didn't get it. Sometimes, it is very hard to interrupt the conversation or cut off someone's word owing to my lack of listening skill. Shyness was a huge barrier to learn English for me.
One day during high school, I was participated in English speech contest because I was in English club in my high school. I stood in front of a lot of audience alone. Spotlight was too bright to open see.
In spite of tense and constraint, I draw a deep breath, and started "Goon evening, ladies and gentlemen. Today, I ‘d like to speak about…"
"Thank you for your attention" As I closed, confident that I express my thought with other language arouse in my mind receiving a storm of applause. Because I screwed up my courage, I made it. Don't be afraid of asking a question. Don't be afraid of talking to natives. Don't be afraid of confronting the truth that I have lots of things to learn regarding English. A lot of the soliloquy I

Around the age of fifteen my mom started training me to be a waitress. This of course meant interaction with other people and overcoming my shyness. At first I would shadow behind my mom and not say anything, just to observe what she says to customers when waits on them. Then I started asking the questions, I still had my mom by my side, but I was the one communicating with the customer. Still overcoming my shyness, I found myself all the same very nervous to talk to customers alone. Sometimes I would neglect to ask all the necessary questions for an order and I would have to return to the table. I learned quickly that having to go back and ask a detail that I neglected was more nerve racking than asking in the first place. During training, I made many mistakes that proved to be quite embarrassing. I took food to the wrong table, placed orders incorrectly, and gave customers the wrong kind of drink refill.…

I have always been a more reserved person, and as I began high school, I realized that beyond being just quiet or shy, I was dealing with social anxiety. With support from my family and friends, this is something that by acknowledging, I have been able to work towards improving. Being surrounded by a community of students made up of such unique, accepting, and intelligent individuals has also helped me with this. I have been very fortunate to have been a part of such an amazing group of students and teachers during my years as an IB student. While my social anxiety may be something I still struggle with daily, I have learned that it takes nothing away from the smart and kind individual that I have become as I have grown up, and I hope that as I continue into college and into my life, that more people will be able to see such things in…

I struggled with speech-language until high school. It was difficult to pronounce certain words, so instead of speaking my ideas or opinions, I would stay quite. The lack of proficiency in English-made me insecure to speak in front of the classroom. Many people believed I was a shy child, yet he/she did not know the real reason why I dislike participating. School children would tease each if he/she had a Mexican accent. That made me even more worried. The fact, that I saw my father continue to struggle with the English language it always resonated with me. My father would get frustrated when he could not pronounce certain words. My father would always take my siblings or me to doctor’s appointment, insurance companies, and banks to translate for him. It was difficult being a child not knowing what professionals were saying. They would use big words that I did not understand at the time. My father would get upset and tell me why I could not translate what he/she was…

When they talk to me I did not know if I should say to everything they say or no. well, when I was in Haiti they begin to teach us English and Spanish in 7th grades. I was not a big fan of Spanish I did know why maybe because they have too much rolling tongue in it. I only knew some survivor stuff in English like “I’m hungry” “I’m thirsty” “where am I” etcetera, but when someone try to us big word with me or try to keep a conversation with me I did know what to say. I remember one day, I say I will never learn English or speak it because the way I see people around me speak it, the way I see my little brother who was born here, my niece, my nephews speak it fascinated me I said…

Like most foreigners, I thought I was the only person who struggled with English. I found that I wasn't the only one. In the article “Barriers,” Rolando Niella reveals that he’s with English even when he entering college in Massachusetts. According to Rolando, English is like playing with tennis. Rolando states that foreigners question the ways they communicate and relate with an English speakers. In another article “The School Days of an Indian Girl,” Zitkala-Sa says that she also struggles with English and lost her spirt along the way. Both authors conclusion is that we as foreigners struggles and that we need to send who are close with us to understand and help us learns. I agree with both authors that learning English is very hard and that…
