My Response to Modesty
Essay: Marvell Response
"Modesty is the proof that morality is sexy". According to Shalit, modesty is the new "thing". Some of myself agrees with this opinion, some of myself disagrees. Morality can be considered sexy especially since morality is so rare, while at the same time morality can be considered by definition, a "turn off". A modest girl leaves a lost boy wondering, while a completely immodest girl gives him exactly what he really desires, total awareness. Shalit also states that "without any restraint and without any rules, we just wouldn't have as much fun", in other words, morality and modesty is not fun. When a person has nothing but rules, they do not seem to have as much fun as the person who is unstable and finds themselves in trouble and tapping into the wrong type of "fun". I believe that modestly is more of a personal preference of opinion or actions. There can only be a general definition of the word, modesty. What to one person could be considered modesty, to another person could be considered totally and utterly immodest. The same can be said about morality. The reason being is because of the difference of bringing up and the change in cultures and paths that were taken by one’s ancestors. Society used to be in more of a groove, now we find that we are all more independent and self sustaining. We decide what is true for ourselves and what we consider to be right and wrong. When society was in a groove, we all believed the same thing. For example, 1 Timothy 2:9 says, “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls, or expensive clothes”. I believe that in the Bible times, all women listened to the rules of God and followed His rules. Society has grown away from the laws and teachings of God therefore, becoming less modest and moral.
