My Resilience In High School
Resilience It was the best of times, it was the worst of times – high school and the years leading up to it, that is. In retrospect, I did not think I was prepared for that day, but I had it in me to cross the stage on that football field to receive my high school diploma. Although, my legs were shaking, hands clammy from anxiety, heart beating, and minding racing as I side-eyed all of the unfamiliar faces glaring at me from the stadium seats, I pushed forward to accept what I had worked my tail off for. Despite all of the obstacles and hardships in my path, I beat the odds, I made it, graduating in the top of my high school class. It was a heartwarming, celebratory feeling to hear my name announced and the cheering afterward on that scorching day in May of 2013. …show more content…
I remember growing up without much, literally without much. I can think back to my first, but not last, taste of bullying, ridicule, and embarrassment in elementary school. The fact that we, my family, did not have as much as others, coupled with me being the shy, nerd, I began to hate school and speaking up in class. I would shrink in my seat, trying to run away from the sharp looks and taunts. I grew up to be a passive individual, who barely spoke, stuttered when it came time to present or simply stand in front of peers – figuratively lost my voice. I was scared of how others perceived me, what they would say, what they were saying. However, I realized, there are certain things you cannot control, aspects you have to deal with. When life deals you a deck, you play the deck you are dealt and play it smart. I watched the people around me struggle and made a promise that I would find a way to better myself so I could lead a different life. My education was the only thing I had. So what if everyone picked on me for being a know-it-all, I was driven, with a great work ethic and a strong sense of self-discipline, all of which have gotten me

When I first arrived at high school, I was extremely nervous. The school was huge and there was not a familiar face in site. Although I was nervous, staff and students did their best to create a positive learning environment. Going into my sophomore year, I received the same positive energy from the staff and my peers. My guidance counselor, Ms. Hunter, helped me to prepare and offered me the opportunity to enroll in…

It was autumn. That time of the year where students struggle to get back into the flow of their everyday schedule after a summer of winding down. That wasn’t the case for me. I was a junior at Xaverian Brothers high school, who flew through my freshman and sophomore year of high school like it was nothing, and was ready to start the most important year of my high school career. I knew what lied ahead, SAT’s, the common application and more importantly deciding on what I want to do with my life.…

Once I entered high school I faced countless traumatic family and financial problems. My father was not allowed to live with us, our house became foreclosed, and my mother was out of work. Throughout my years of high school, I have worked to help keep my mother’s head above the drowning financial pressure. I felt alone and hopeless during these difficult times. Each morning it felt as if the world had put a new burden on my shoulder to carry, making it harder and harder to get out of bed, to be productive at school and succeed. However, it is these morning I am most thankful for now. I knew how easy it was to give up on myself, and my dreams when no one was looking. I knew how easy it was to dish out excuse after excuse for why I wasn't applying…

When I was seventeen, I dropped out of high school. For me this was not a good choice, and as time went on I regretted not finishing school. In 1999, five years after I dropped out, I decided to get my GED. The day the mail came and I opened up the envelope with my GED inside of it, I was the happiest person on the planet. I called everyone I knew to let them know I would be having a cap and gown ceremony. Words cannot describe the joy I felt at knowing that I had finally finished school. This day will be a day that I never forget.…

To be the person that I am now, I had to reflect and accept accountability of my past actions. My past is one that many would love to erase from their memory, a past, which remained dormant, until I found myself. The steps involved in regaining myself including letting go of my anger and self-pity. I had to look within myself and see my self’s worth. I lost sight of my goal, to become a lawyer. My goals were buried by my present materialization infatuation, thus my dreams, and my values, failed just to create a façade of which I came to despise. Through my journey and reflection, I came to appreciate family values and redemption. Like others, my trials and tribulations came full circle.…

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this past year, it’s that suddenly and unexpectedly, life can hit you. It can hit you hard. Often, I’d find myself weighing my doubts, my willingness to succeed, but as the window to salvage my semester began to close I saw but 2 options: Lay down and accept it, or push forward towards success. The choice was clear.…

My childhood is something I don’t often reflect on. There were good times as well as bad, and unfortunately, it’s hard to weigh out which ones affected me the most. I was a normal child, a little on the rambunxious side, and often felt that if there was something that needed to be said, I wanted to say it…so I did. I remember the first time I decided to brave ‘the rapids’, and everyone thought it was funny, but after a while, that didn’t bode well with my parents because sometimes I said the wrong things at the wrong time. When that happened, I was corrected very quickly, and sometimes, my family would talk loud and fast so that I couldn’t have the chance to jump into the conversations.…

In school I felt inferior to my peers and being well aware they used me as a bullying target. Although I have three older brothers and a younger sister, I felt alone and isolated. Because of my parents constant reminder of ‘don’t tell anyone’ it enforced fear and disclosure as I had no one to turn to. I felt secluded from whom I was to discuss my problems with and as if there wasn’t already enough conflict within the home environment, I didn’t want to become anymore of a…
