My Polish Teacher's Tie 'And When The Wasps Drowned'
Task 2 Reading Response

In this task we had to choose two of the stories from the anthology and comparing them to see their differences and similarities, as well as to see what makes the interesting, effective and unique. Some of the things we could have considered were genre, storyline, character/narrative voice, settings and the use of language and structure.

I decided to choose: My Polish Teacher’s Tie and When the Wasps Drowned. The reasons for this is because the two stories have some key differences but a few similarities as well.

The Similarities
The first most obvious similarity is that both stories are written in the first person, they both use “I” and tell a story from a single character’s point of view.

Another similarity is the structure of the stories. They use half a page (3-4 paragraphs) to define the characters and the setting, after that they use another half of a page to briefly hint towards the main plot point. After that there are 2 pages of introduction to the climax, where more detail is given about the main characters and the plot, then eventually the story reaches the main point. However, the two climaxes of the stories are very different.

Towards the end of My Polish Teacher’s Tie Carla says: “It went through me like a knife through butter.” She is talking about the polish song that Steve sings. It symbolises how she “Opened up” her new identity and “unlocked a new version of herself”. An example of symbolism in When the Wasps Drowned is when the wasps are killed, their bodies lie, motionless on the ground. This symbolises death and because the climax of the story is the children finding the dead girl in Mr Mordecai’s garden, this symbolisation helps to define the tone of the

The most important thing that makes the stories different is the setting and the plot. Both stories may have a similar theme but the setting and plot it what separates them. For example, one story takes place in a cage and the other story takes place in a school. The climax in each story is different from each other. For example, in the story “from Boy’s Life” the student was so desperate to leave the class when the teacher told the class to leave in a single line, which makes the reader wonder what happens…

The stories were similar in a few ways. For instance, they were both poor men who sold their souls to the devil. The devil was a large, dark, and secretive man that had them sign the contract in blood. The stories also shared similarities in the fact that both men were religious after signing the contract. After that the stories take completely different directions.…

The themes both gave the message that even thought you have friends, not all of them can be trusted and may end up turning their backs on you in an instant. For the settings, both of the main characters were stuck some how and had no way of getting out of their situations. Lastly the conflicts both dealt with that the characters had to fight on their own in the end even though one of them had to option of help. In conclusion, even though there were the slightest of differences, these stories tell a similar…

Their Eyes Were Watching God and Invisible Man Essay Life has never been easy for African-Americans. Since this country's formation, the African-American culture has been scorned, disrespected and degraded. It wasn't until the middle of the 21st century that African-American culture began to be looked upon in a more tolerant light. This shift came about because of the many talented African-American writers, actors, speakers and activists who worked so hard to gain respect for themselves and their culture. Two writers were on the front lines of this movement, Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison.…

These pieces are unique, but they do share some similarities. One similarity is that they are both written in first person, the characters are talking about themselves and their experiences. The most obvious similarity in my opinion is that they are both fantasy. They both talk about doing things that are inconceivable. They make you believe that the impossible is possible. The people in these stories might be thought of as magical or other-worldly because flying and walking through walls defy the laws of physics.…

One major aspect present in the stories is irony. For example, Mrs. Mallard’s excitement over the death of her husband, and Ulrich and Georg dying when they had just resolved the conflict. Another point is that in the story, situations happens that you don’t expect. Mr. Mallard isn’t dead, and both men die by a wolf attack. Both stories revolve around death, and both stories have a situation occurring in the opposite of the background. In the dark, eerie woods, Ulrich and Georg become friends. In the sad and gloomy atmosphere of her home, Mrs. Mallard finds peace.…

The most obvious similarity between the two books is the author. This similarity leads to several others since Hemingway seems to have a certain writing style that can be found in all of his works. For instance, both stories are written in a very concise manner. The sentences are short and to the point, and he doesn't add any unnecessary words. After a first reading, the sentences even seem drab and emotionless. Another similarity between the books that could be due to the author's writing style is the lack of physical description for the characters. In most books, a mental image can be formed of the characters, but in Hemingway's novels, the physical portion of the image is hard to form. Both of the books also seemed to lack closure and resolution at the end. The endings left the reader to believe that none of the events that occurred during the story had any effect on the characters. In both books, the characters went on living as they always had.…
