Methamphetamine (Meth) The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) website offers information on many different drugs. Some of the information I found was very informative and useful. However, most of the information that was given was very vague, much of the information was not explained and lacked details.
I chose to look more closely into methamphetamine. Meth is a very dangerous and addictive drug that affects many peoples’ lives each year. Meth is a stimulant. Stimulants cause increased heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism, alertness, energy, and paranoia. Stimulants sleep habits and appetite. High doses can lead to overdoses and death. Meth is made in meth labs. Most of the ingredients in meth are very toxic chemicals including drain cleaner and antifreeze. This is the reason meth is so harmful to the body.
Meth can be snorted, smoked, injected, and taken in a pill form. When smoked, a glass pipe is used. Many people make homemade pipes out of household items such as light bulbs. Because meth is smoked out of glass pipes, many users have burn marks on their hands and lips.
Meth has many short and long term effects on the body. Short term effects include increased heart rate, blood pressure, and mood changes. People who use meth become addicted easily because he high is so intense and they continue to use it in order to try and get that high again. Long term effects include paranoia, sores, aging, loss or yellowing o teeth, sensation of bugs crawling on skin, and severe weight loss.
One of the categories that gave false information was on if meth effects a fetus during pregnancy. The website says that it is possible, but not proven that meth effects the fetus. This information is very misleading and negligent in my opinion. Any substance that a mother takes in affects her baby. The fact that meth causes so many side effects to the body such as increased heart rate, means that it has to have an effect on the fetus. Also meth is full of
