People "no longer bother with" Liberal Art subjects such as Philosophy, Sociology and Dance (Urbanek 2). Those who gain a degree in humanities have spent more time and money than students who have achieved a degree in Science, and are considered to be "wasting time upon dead languages'' (Carnegie qtd. in Fish). Also some liberal arts subjects require costly investments on equipments even before you can have any sort of education. Therefore only people who "plan their college experience according to their own interest" are continuing with the study of liberal arts (Urbanek…

I never used to write. In fact, I didn’t much like it. Little did I know that writing would become obsolete and a physiological requirement for the well being of my life. From an early age on all I did was read. I grew up in an isolated environment where books were my escape, and escape was necessary from the hardships of home. I remember being a young seven-year-old boy wearing a pillowcase around my neck fastened with a pen. I was eating animal crackers at the time, and my step dad was calling out for me. I stood up from my crouched position and raised my hand as I learned from pre-school, and said, “ I’m here daddy.” At that moment my step father grabbed me by the cape harshly compressing my trachea purposefully, shaking me back and forth with his hands around my neck as I began to choke on the appetizing cracker animal crumbs within the back of my throat. I didn’t understand at the time what was really going on. My mother came out of the room and my dad acted as if nothing happened and told me to…

Institutions of Higher Learning in Malaysia employ a number of mechanisms to promote community engagement. These include the establishment of the industry and community network division in research universities and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 2007 to accelerate engagement with the community and industry. Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) has developed a new Critical Agenda Project (CAP) known as ‘Knowledge Transfer Programme’ (KTP). KTP recognises a broad range of activities to support mutually beneficial collaborations between universities, industries and communities (government agencies/Non Government Organizations (NGOs)/public sector). It provides the platform for the exchange of tangible and intangible intellectual property, expertise, learning and skills between academia, industry and the community. The forms of interactions may include joint research, consultancy, education, training, graduate development, conferences, sharing of physical facilities, student internship and staff placements. (KTP Policy, 2011).This move clearly shows that University-Community Engagement is given much importance in Institutes of Higher Learning in Malaysia as well as the government.…

Engineering Education cannot serve its purpose, if it merely limits itself to transfer of information from the notebook of the teacher to the notebooks of students.
