My Name Is Zitlally In Star In The Forest
In the book Star in the Forest there are characters who you should meet to understand more about them. The ones that I will be focusing on will be: Zitlally(Me), my two sisters, Mamá, Papá, and Crystal.

“My name is Zitlally. Estrella. Star. That’s what it means in Nahuatl. Nahuatl is what Papá speaks to me in secret, even though I don’t understand.” (Laura Resau, 2010, Page 5) I am 11 years old and I live in a neighborhood called Forest View Mobile Home Park. I have two sisters. Reina, and Dalia. My best friend is Morgan, second is Emma and third is Olivia. Well, at least they were my friends until they dumped me because “I turned boring”. My Papá was deported for speeding and everything is falling apart ever since. Until I Star in the forest and Crystal finds me, everything is coming back together.

I have two sisters. Reina and Dalia. Reina is the youngest, and Dalia is the oldest and they were as frightened as me after that day. After Papá was deported, Reina was watching murder movies and Dalia was out with her friends at the edge of the park where kids are banned because of the shattered glass and needles. Usually Mamá and Papá would say answer was no to both but now Mamá was always on the phone

I love my Papá. He would speak to me in a softly in a language full of shhhhs that I couldn’t understand. I called it star language because I always thought that was what the stars whispered to each other. He used to do my favorite thing with me in the summer. Mushroom hunting! Last time we went I was six. That was 5 years ago. I even went to Xono with him and Mamá. “Now my memories of Xono are broken pieces, like a plate that you dropped and you only saved a few shards and lost the rest. The best pieces, the one I look at again, are the days we went mushroom hunting.” (Laura Resau, 2010 Page 26) Even though Papá is gone right now, me and him have good memories. And when he comes back, we’ll have more to

Over the years that I’ve been at Burdick, I’ve gained many great friends, but I also lost a few. Only a few selective of them, I tell my secrets to. For example, Kaiden, Coreena, Dakota, Elysium, Joelle, Jose, and Isaiah. They’re the greatest friends anyone could ask for and have. They’re loyal, truthful, understanding, funny, witty, sarcastic, and just plain awesome. I have them to thank for making ordinary moments, extraordinary. They’re always there when I want to hang out or vent out my feelings. They put in that extra effort to understand me for who I am, not caring the slightest bit about my flaws and imperfections. And if I ever need to shed some tears, I know that at least one of them will be there to comfort me. There are times where…

The languages we speak around our families are often different from the ones we use in the professional world. Tan states this opinion in her essay; she remembers a time when she was conscious of the English she was using around her mother. She was walking down the street with her mother and using the English that she did not use around her mother. She also states that this is the same type of English she uses with her husband. She writes that this type of language “has become our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language I grew up with.” (Tan, page 143) Anzaldua has a similar opinion when it comes to the language of our family; she writes “My “home” tongues are the languages I speak with my sister and brothers, with my friends.”(Anzaldua, page 134) Her type of language is a considered a subcategory of Spanish, called Chicano Spanish. Anzaldua also explains that in her culture she had to learn different dialects of Spanish, according to region that person was from. These two women played chameleon with their languages, blending in perfectly with their surroundings, wearing a mask to the world until they were home. At home, they were safe to use the language they grew up using without fear of…

If it’s her parents she would speak to them in a Spanish and respectful tone. If it’s her siblings she would talk in English and at time she would talk in Spanish. She would be more open and comfortable talking to her siblings compared to her parents. She would also talk in a “Code” with her sisters to exclude anyone that doesn’t know this code. Jennifer and her siblings made this code so that her parents wouldn’t know what they are talking about. The code that I use within the community would be a “Gaming” code. Only people that play a certain game would know this code and I use it with my friends all the time. For example me and my friends would be talking and if one of us does something wrong we would call someone a “Noob”. Jennifer also mentioned that when her parents disagreed with her going out somewhere or they felt that it was too late to go out, her parents would try to convince her out of it and maybe even trying to scare her to not going. For instance, my parents would say that “El CuCuy” was going to get me for watching tv late at night or just staying up past my bedtime. Anzaldua herself writes, “ Don’t go to the outhouse at night, Prieta, my mother would say. No se te vaya a meter algo por allá. A snake will crawl into your nalgas, make you pregnant……….”. Anzaldua’s mom is a clear representation that this type of language between the hispanic community existed in…

Everyone has a specific role that they associate with when it comes to speaking different languages. Anzaldua describes this by saying, “My ‘home’ tongues are the languages I speak with my sister and brothers, with my friends” (“Tongue” 36). With Chicano Spanish and Tex-Mex as some of the most dependent languages for her, she also speaks a total of five different languages that she picked up from school, reading literature, and different cultures. She feels most confident when she speaks in her native tongue, without the distraction of adjusting to another language. She knows how to speak many languages, but is always having to speak differently according to different cultures. As time went on, the Chicano language grew rapidly, and now includes elements from seven different languages, such as Standard English, Working class and slang English, Standard Spanish, Standard Mexican…

He was always there making sure I was making the right decisions and teaching me every painful lesson for making the wrong decision. I remember when I was 14 and I sort of ran away, but eventually got hungry and started riding my bike home. I got about half way there and sure enough he pulled up alongside me in the truck and all he said was “I’ll be waiting for you at home boy”. With only about 2 miles left it took me about 1 hour and a half. When I finally got there he knocked me off my bike and started teaching in his own way. This is by far…
