My Mother's Experience
My Mother’s Experience Tuesday, April 2nd, at 6:13 p.m., was the day that my mother received severe pains in her abdomen. As a safety precaution, we – my brother, father, and I – rushed her to the hospital. This had not been the first time she had experienced these kinds of pains, as per my dad. When I was the age of four, my mother had kidney stones and had an operation done to remove them because the stones were to large to pass through the urinary tract. Remembering this, I realized she may have the same problem again because this was not the first time she has experienced abdominal pains this year. As we were all waiting in the hospital room waiting for the doctor to diagnose my mother’s condition, I feared she had destroyed some organ in her body. When the doctor finally came out, he told us that she would have to stay overnight because they needed to have tests done to confirm his hunch of kidney stones.
The next morning, he did in fact confirm that she had kidney stones but once again they were too large to be removed without surgery. The only problem with the surgical procedure was that he was not sure if the kidneys would be harmed since there were quite a few stones. The look on my mother’s face from the amount of pain had us decide to continue on with the procedure. At 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday April 3rd, she entered the operating room with everyone’s anxiety filling the atmosphere of the waiting room. Around 10:50, the doctor emerged from the operating room holding a test tube with rocks the size of marbles. The flood of relief after a successful operation was overwhelming, but short-lived.
My father, not wanting to take any more chances, had her get a full physical to make sure she was healthy enough to go home. It was then, we learned that my mother had the possibility of having breast cancer. Because of this, they decided to keep her a little while longer to run more tests like an ultrasound and a mammography. At the time, my mother was exhausted

On September 8th 1990, it was a hot sunny day in the city of Cali, Colombia. Temperature around 88°F with very low humidity, normal for that time of year, since the summer was about to begin. A sky full of altocumulus clouds cooled the estimated population of about 1.7 million people ("1990 population estimate for Cali, Colombia."). Among that population there was my mother. Already late for her gynecology appointment, inconveniently causes by a car accident, she would shortly find out when I would be entering the world. The accident turned a 20-minute drive in a 45-minute drive. Rushing into the clinic, as the doctor’s assistant was calling her name, she rapidly was taken to the back to speak with the provider. When the doctor came into the room he calmly said, “I have good news, and bad news”. My mom’s heart already racing she decided to go with the bad news first. “The probability of being a complicated birth is pretty high, which means the surgical team will have to perform a cesarean section instead of a vaginal birth”. My mother relived thinking it would be something much worse she asked the doctor to go ahead with the good news. “The baby will probably be arriving today”. My mom became frantic, “that’s the good news? They might as well both have been bad! My mother panicked, she had nothing ready for the birth, since her first child was not due for another 10 days. Her hormone levels raging at an all time sky high, she shortly began to cry. The doctor and his staff hugged her and reassured her that everything was going to be ok. They quickly rushed her to the hospital where they would have all the equipment in the event that there were any major complications. Once she was all settled in, the operating room staff started to prepare for the birth around 3:15 P.M. The staff thought I was ready to come out, however I took another three hours to make my grand appearance. At 6:23 PM I arrived spreading my arms and legs with a…

At 12:30 at night on June 1, 2015, my life would soon change forever. I was pregnant with my first child and my water had just broken. My mom rushed me to the hospital where I was immediately put in a private room, in the hospital bed where I was about to deliver my first child, a son. He came so quickly (5 & 1/2 hours in total) and I had requested no pain medications and turned it down on several occasions as the medical staff pleaded with me to use it. The pain began to become more and more unbearable, so much so that I honestly felt paralyzed from my waist down. My body was taking over to my surprise and I was just there with my legs in stirrups. They seemed immovable and with the pains coming faster, it is as if they stopped receiving any of the signals my brain was sending to them.…

Short-term goals for MK are to control his pain and remain hydrated. He has prescriptions for Hydrocodone/acetaminophen 5-325mg and Ibuprofen 800mg for pain relief. MK was recommended to maintain a fluid intake of at least 2500 ml. a day. Fluid intake is the main component of fluid volume, which is necessary to decrease urine stasis, and increase urine flow, which helps to prevent kidney stone formation. Long-term goals were focused on patient teaching and understanding of the processes of kidney stone formation, possible ways of prevention, and available methods of treatments. Since the formation of kidney stones is strongly tied to lifestyle and diet, dietary modifications play an important role and are a priority in MKs education (researchgate 1). MK was recommended to terminate the use of vitamin D and calcium supplements, calcium intake should not exceed 1,000-1,200 mg daily. He was encouraged to increase his intake of fruits and vegetables, restrict sodium intake, and limit non-dairy animal protein (researchgate). MK was asked to schedule a follow-up appointment with the physician if he decided to get lithotripsy treatment. He was discharged with his…

This was the diagnosis of stage four cancers that affected my mom and there was nothing that the doctors could do. This is the most serious illness that I have had to deal with was truly hard on me and a lot more so on my dad; since he and mom would have been married more than thirty years.…
