My Most Significant Community Service Experience
1. What attracted you to the Masters in Medical Science program at Hampton University?
The number of students in a classroom setting was what attracted me the most. When I learned about the program a year ago I felt it was too good to be true. When I was completing my bachelor’s degree I never felt that sense of belonging towards my university. I was there to check the box, get the degree and get out. Now it’s different I am looking for an institution that values me as much as I value them. I knew this was true of this university when I meat the Assistant Dean of Admissions Mr. Michael D. Druitt. He was the face of the institution, and he made me feel I was part of something much bigger than my Master’s degree. He made me feel this institution

Describe your most significant community service experience.
I am a member of the United States Air Force and had the opportunity to serve on humanitarian medical missions. There are the most humbling experiences I have had. We bring medical care to remote areas, and give basic and extensive care to people that have never seen a doctor in their lives. The team of surgeons I served with was able to give a smile and a chance of a normal life to an infant that had a cleft lip. Seeing the reaction of their parents after they saw their kid was priceless, it does not get better than

I was assigned to an anesthesiologist for a semester while completing my bachelor’s degree. I followed his schedule and his surgeries. I would meet with him every day at 4 in the morning to prepare for surgery and interact with the patients that were having procedures later that day. I was able to observe different types of surgeries such as tumor and limb extractions, knee and hip replacements, open heart and brain surgeries. In addition this experience gave me insight of the demand this type of career has in the physician’s personal life. After the completion of my volunteer program I felt much more connected to the career path I wanted to

My interest in medicine started during my year of service in AmeriCorps at International Community School. During the year of service, I have encountered several students who needed to get checkups and their physical pains evaluated but lack the resources and insurance. I am surprised in an urban setting such as the greater Atlanta area, how there are so many people who need to see a doctor but do not have access to proper health care. My goal as an aspiring doctor is to practice in an underserved community. I would consider it a great privilege to give back and serve to those in need.…

My OR day consisted of a hernia repair, a colonoscopy, and a hemorroidectomy. The role of the surgeon was to come in and perform the surgery. The anesthesiologist induced anesthesia, and monitored the patients heart and respirations and other vitals during the surgery. They also bring the patient out of anesthesia and extubate them. The circulating nurse job was to monitor during surgery and make sure the patient is safe, and to call the patients family during and after the surgery. The circulating nurse also goes to the pre-op holding area and assesses the patient prior to surgery and brings them into the OR. The surgical technicians job is to assist the surgeon during the procedure and hand him the required tools needed. They also count before and after the surgery to make sure all tools are present and accounted for. The PACU nurse role was to monitor the patient’s vitals and pain after surgery and to administer any medications. They also monitor the patient’s arousal after surgery and the surgical site for any possible complications. The first surgery I saw was a hernia repair. The surgeon made a 6-8 inch incision in the abdomen and repaired a recurrent hernia in the small intestine. He then put in a mesh to keep everything in place. General anesthesia was used for this procedure and the patient was intubated and tolerated/woke up well. Betadine skin prep was used and general draping techniques were used. In PACU the nurse observed the patients level of consciousness and pain level. She also monitored the drainage from the wound and the wound site, and vitals. The second procedure I saw was a colonoscopy accompanied by a hemorroidectomy. First the surgeon did the colonoscopy by lubricating and inserting a tube with a camera into the anus and up through to the opening of the stomach. A screen was available to let the surgeon see what he was doing and if any problems were inside the intestines. The second thing the…

What makes this school a better option than others? Generally speaking, the school offers a plethora of internships and opportunities, small and personable classes, and a wide spectrum of educational programs that have been nationally ranked. About 70% of all classes have less than thirty students, which goes along with the student-teacher ratio of 17:1 (University of Michigan-Dearborn). By lessening the copious amounts of people in a given class, students can find themselves more able to form a relationship with the professor, ask questions, and focus more. Not all colleges follow this path, which is part of the “difference” at this university. Several studies prove that the smaller the class size, the higher the achievements students obtain. For the best results, the ratio should fall around 15:1 of students to teachers (Center for Public Education). Michigan-Dearborn has recognized these facts and has made efforts to create inclusive environments for an optimal learning experience for…

I still can recall the feeling of pure unadulterated fear, and even thinking about it now gives me that sense of dread that has become all too familiar. Every first day was slightly different, but they all had the same effect on me, the uncomfortable feeling of being on the chopping block. In four years, I have experienced the feeling of brand new faces staring at me with harsh, judgemental eyes 4 times, something most high schoolers have to endure only once, if at all. However, these four different educational institutions have brought more than just scholarly concepts into my mind. They have each bent and contorted me in ways that have forced me to learn to become inure. Each transfer required me to adapt and learn to make friends with people who were not…

They had already attended 74 patients before I arrived in the afternoon to begin my job shadow. Since the workers have a lot of experience, it was easy for them to go through the list of patients quickly. It also surprised me that they had a portable x-ray, and it was the first time I got to see one. The x-ray was used for patients who cannot stand or leave their rooms due to problems they have. Being able to observe an x-ray being done in a patient's room was very interesting.…

When I had first volunteered at a preparatory school as a teacher’s assistant, I was thrilled and excited. I enjoyed working with children and I admit, was slightly disillusioned with expectations that the children would be dutiful and effortless to watch over. Unfortunately, all my prior imaginations crashed the second I entered the classroom. Everywhere I saw, it was pure chaos. I dodged a flying crayon as I saw children running around throwing paper airplanes, balls, while others just stared at their iPads, focused on the latest game. Not a single one of them even listened to me or glanced at me as I tried to yell over the loud chatter.…

This was especially demonstrated to me while I volunteered at Columbia Hospital. I was tasked with feeding an irritable patient that was paralyzed from the neck down for the past 30 years. A simple 25-minute lunch turned into a two-hour long conversation. Being in that room with him instilled a deep sense of sympathy that I knew would be necessary in a field where doctors use facile explanations of illnesses to their patients. Patients often don’t understand the full extent of their illness and neither do their loved ones. It is important for doctors to have the ability to sympathize with their patients. After our conversation, the patient had become significantly more cooperative with the staff. It was such a motivating and educational experience to see how a volunteer, of all people, could improve the standard of care for a patient. I can only imagine the impact a physician could make.…
