My Most Memorable Experience My most memorable experience would have to be the first time I stepped into a dance studio. I recall walking into an old musty room I could smell the sweat from afar. The dance teacher was repeating words that would forever stay with me for years to come. Five, six, seven, eight! The teacher stood in the center of the room clapping her delicate hands to the rhythm of the drum. As I stood there I was transformed. I started to perspire with excitement. I could see the dancers their faces full of intensity stomping to the rhythm of the drum. I knew at that moment that I was soon going to be part of that group. My body began to prepare itself for the intensity of my first class, that would forever be part of my life. Folklorico dance was soon to become part of my life. I quietly sat down and began to stretch my muscles to prepare for my class. I could see skirts of many vibrant colors twirling and spinning making beautiful designs in the air. I stepped into my folklorico shoes. These shoes are especially made for this type of dance. They have nails on the tip of the shoe and on the heal, this enables the dancer to make sounds that are different from those used in tap shoes or flamenco shoes. These shoes are hard to find, they are usually ordered from cities like Guadalajara, or Mexico. I joined the other dancers their faces full of passion and intensity. They were already producing beautiful “zapateados”, Toe heal flat, toe, heal flat. I began to move my feet to rhythm of the beat.

The dancing has already started when I arrived. I was told that they were doing the ‘Intertribal Dance’. In this particular dance, everyone is welcome to take part – even the spectators. The dancers moved in a circular clockwise motion a without any particular moves. They then invited the public to join them in the dance. I was hesitating to try it at first. But I told myself that won’t get the experience anywhere else. So, I decided to just do it. The basic step is the same step used by traditional dancers. First, one foot is tapped on one beat, placed down flatly. The action is then repeated with the opposite foot, without missing a beat. I enjoyed taking part in the dance as it was the only chance for me to experience the Native American culture closely.…

Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. This was about a year after I moved to Kansas City and when I just started going to the Kansas City Ballet. The whole experience changed my point of view completely over not just dance but ballet to. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for moving to KCB.…

My first story is my first homecoming dance, which was fun. I did not know how to dress for that kind of dance, and I decided that I would try to look nice and put on some heeled sandals a red skirt and a tank top. At that point, I did not know that I liked to dance, and I just stayed in the corner, too shy to come out of it. I danced terribly that night,…

When people think about ballet the same image enters everybody’s mind, a ballerina standing on her toes while she wears beautiful silk pointe shoes. Along with experience a dancer also needs to be responsible and also needs to know how to care for her and the shoes in order to prevent serious injury. Pointe shoes are generally made with a lot of layers but even many layers cannot prevent pain and injury. It is important that I discuss the history of pointe dancing, the disciple and care that is needed to become advanced in pointe work, and the dangers or injuries that can occur with improper usage.…

There was a time in my life when the only thing I wanted to do was dance. It was like I couldn’t get up and start my day without releasing those wonderful endorphins. The instant high I would get just by moving my body and sweating really made me feel alive. There were days that I did not dance. I felt extremely lazy and my feet felt heavy like they were dragging across the floor as I walked. What a difference it made the way I felt for the rest of the day. It was like I could accomplish anything I set my mind to do. It all started when I was three years old. My first dance studio was called Ms. Frances in Rocky Hill, CT, later known as New England School of Dance. Ballet was the first type of dance that I was introduced to. I remember loving the small tutus I had to wear. Later came jazz, tap, hip-hop and lyrical. I remember my recitals and having all of the costume changes. It was so much fun backstage with my friends getting ready to go on stage to show off my dance moves. I also enrolled in a traveling hip-hop class at a different school that was located in Norwich, CT. This type of hip-hop was very old school with a lot of funky moves. The moves were a little harder, but I loved it. We had competitions all over the state. Meanwhile, Ms. Frances owner, Miss Adriana also had a…

When I was about five years old I did my first ballet recital. I was doing the recital with my best friend Emma because we took ballet classes together. It was Easter at the time so the theme of the recital was bunny. We wore bunny ears and pastel pink tutus, and I knew we looked beautiful. I was confident that I was a good dancer, but I probably was not as good as I theorized. I had a wonderful time doing ballet with Emma. At the end of the recital Emma and I got roses and lots of hugs. After the recital my family and I went to a restaurant called Jimmy Max. I have lots of fond memories of my first recital…

After each section the instructors in the room would dismiss a handful of girls and regretfully tell them that they would no longer be considered for admission. The first section was barre, or rhythmic ballet stretching and warm ups. Barre exercises showcase each dancer’s technique… or lack thereof. I began each class in my studio with a twenty-minute barre warm-up, so I breezed through it. The first cuts were made, bringing the number of girls in the room down by ten. The next section was a ballet floor movement. An instructor dictated the counts and the motions for each six count, totaling twelve six-counts. We split into groups of five and performed the instructor’s dictated counts. This time five girls were cut, leaving us to only twenty-nine girls. Next came my weakest style: modern. Modern or contemporary dancing could almost be considered as interpretive dance due to its loose counts and generalized movements. To my amazement, I wasn’t included in the group of fourteen dismissals, leaving our group still smaller with a total of fifteen girls. Next came pointe. Pointe shoes worn by professional ballerinas are comprised of wood, glue, leather and silk, and are able to support the arch of the foot and toes just enough so that the ballerina wearing them is able to stand on the tips of her toes. By the end of the thirty-minute long pointe movement that our instructor had given us, I had suffered a later confirmed three…

Although there are many events that I could talk about that have influenced me and my life, there is one that stands out to me. This past year alone has been a tremendous year of growth for me; all thanks to being in dance. I have danced for 12 years altogether, and for the past two years, I found myself at a wonderful studio filled with people who became my family. Not long after I started attending, I was invited into their handpicked Repertory group. When I accepted, I had no idea what was in store for me. I was then asked to be a teacher's assistant for a younger group of kids, which was a huge honor. Eventually, my group was told that we had to hand choreograph a solo for us to preform in front of the entire team and panel of judges. To any other person, these things might look truly amazing and an adventure that not many have had the pleasure to experience.…
