My Literacy: My Pursuit Of Education
The traditional meaning of literacy means reading and writing and an understanding of both. Literacy has evolved over the years. In the 21st century, this definition should include technologies, poetry, music, books on tape and the world in which we live. What comes to mind when I think of the term literacy? I think of different genres of literature and making connections between the reader, author and the text. It is the foundation for many aspects in a person’s life. Literacy plays a tremendous role determining how well someone will perform in school, socializing with others and in future careers. As mentioned previously literacy is presented in several forms and these forms give the reader many options to connect with the words.

From being exposed to different literature over the years, I began to question everything and accept nothing. Literature is not only words on paper, its colors and music. It’s traveling to different places and getting lost without ever wanting to be found and not having to leave home. Literature is powerful words.
Literature has also had an impact on my pursuit of education. If I was not a dedicated reader, I doubt if I would have come as far as I did in my academic career. My thirst for knowledge is what motivates me. In my personal endeavors, I would love to write a children’s fantasy series one day. My love for literacy is what made me the person I am today. I love to learn and grow through

She will also read not only because it is required, but because she has a passion for reading. There have been countless days we spent in the house reading the entire day. Before my daughter began Pre-Kindergarten, I would schedule times to read with her whether after lunch or before bed. As she moved up in her grade levels, we would alternate reading, she would read one page and I would read the next while asking each question such as, “How do you feel about what is happening?” “How do you think the character feels? and “What would you do if you were in this situation?” Parents are a child’s first teacher and I believe my grandmother and mother opened a new world for me by taking me to the library and reading to me. This is what I plan to accomplish with my

“A book is a gift you can open again and again,” wrote Garrison Keillor. People read all the time. They read for information, for escape, for entertainment, for instruction, for guidance. They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. As I consider my reading experiences, I realize they represent the journey I have traveled, leading me to my current academic path.…

I’ve always had the desire to write beautifully, from penmanship to placement and flow of the words. I remember getting birthday cards from my Granny with elegant cursive writing. Attracted to the way each word blended so smooth and soft, I would get a piece of paper and mimic the slants of each word connecting each letter, more like one lowercase “l” after another, to the next. One day I’d be able to spell the words in my mind, and until that day I’d practice my “cursive” one squiggly line at a time.…

Literacy is everywhere: from reading signs, to menus, to checking the time. It is important in our everyday life, especially to take a break from the world. Literacy is important to be creative, and to help use our ability to imagine what is happening in our stories while we are writing. The experience of going with a character on their journey can be life changing in some perspectives. The experience of growing up with these characters from literature was the best thing; whether it was being on edge during the climax, or feeling sad when I’m near the end.…

My final project was a remake of my personal literacy narrative. Through this project, there were demonstrations of the many I began to lose interest in my writing. It showed how my high school took me from loving one thing so much and turning it something that is now simply just there. I still believe literature is an important skill that everyone must learn and know, but sometimes there can be many cases that cause you to no longer enjoy something. In my case, the reason for literature no longer being something that amuses me is that there were just too many factors that made writing no longer fun. There were times where I felt that literature no longer helped me be creative or express myself. Anything that involved timing a person on a creative…

Growing up in a bilingual household has affected my literacy journey. It affected my Spanish writing because I focused more on English. This course has helped me look at English literacy beyond the point of it being another credit to simply cross off my list. A specific reading from this course that I was able to really retain and relate to was Victor Villanueva's excerpt from Bootstraps: From an Academic of Color. Here he brought up several points that made me think differently about literacy and how it can affect my life now or even after college. “One professor said my writing was too formulaic. One professor said it was to novel. Another wrote: ‘nonsense.’ “ (Villanueva 112) I really like this quote because relating it back to literacy and my college experience ahead of me, it makes me understand that there will be times…

When exploring what it means to read and write, it is easy to forget how valuable the knowledge of literacy is. People take for granted the fact that our whole world revolves around communication and that our main sources of communication are reading and writing. Whether I’ve realized it or not, involvement in reading and writing comes into play for all different scenarios. It is used for everyday tasks such as reading directions, writing a grocery list, interpretating an email, or checking Facebook. Through this I have noticed how much reading and writing I actually do. In effect, it plays a huge role in how I communicate with others as well. Since current perceptions on literacy are typically schoolwork related I want to begin to rethink what it actually means to read and write. I want to explore the different types of literacy that have shaped who I am and what perceptions I have of myself when it comes to the knowledge of literacy.…
