The two essays I chose was “Homeless” and “ This old house: The heart is a lonely menagerie. As I was skimming through the different essays these two really stood out. The similarities and differences really bring the two stories together. Everyday people are put situations where they take life for granted.

Homeless by Quindlen, A. (n.d.) describes how a woman judged a woman she met on the street. We should never judge anyone because we do not know their situation. As the woman who was homeless in the story once had a house full of luxurious items. She once had a life that everyone wanted. As she stood there in her raggedy clothes no one would ever thing she had a beautiful home. Society tends to judge people that are dressed in dirty clothes, or smelly ones. They think they are thieves or killers just by their appearance. Many times that is not the case, its just some people run in to bad luck and have no choice but to be homeless. The other woman in the story, in my opinion takes life for granted. Even though she loves the dumb things in her home that did not stop her from judging the homeless woman.

This old house: The heart is a lonely menagerie by Sedaris David. This story describes how this family does not matter where things come from as long as they are fed and there is clothes on their back. The family didn’t have much money nor were they able to always afford new things, but they made due with what they had. The mother in the story valued her things even though they have may been old or dusty. She would focus more on the beauty of the item rather then quality of it. Every time someone would come over and look at her furniture she would yell “ You like it? Its Scandinavian”. The mother did not care what people though of her furniture. She was proud of the things she had.

The two stories are similar and different. They both show us about the value of

In Homeless by Anna Quindlen she gives us a homeless woman named Ann. She was doing a story on homeless and the woman was trying to prove her wrong by showing pictures of her house. Anna realized that this woman was just like all of us before. The point that Quindlen is trying to make: the homeless were people just like us once, they were no different. The thesis of On Compassion by Barbara Lazear Ascher is: we can't deny that homelessness exists when it hits us in the face everyday. Compassion is not a trait that we inherit, it is a learned experience. The thesis from Homeless by Anna Quindlen is the homeless were once just like us but something happened to them that made them lose their homes.…

Our perceptions of the homeless and our perceptions of those that live in poverty is that homelessness and poverty are two of the most critical social issues impacting millions of people today. Some people living in poverty trend to believe that they deserve a helping hand at all times. There are so many challenges of living in poverty, especially the struggles to escape from it. As in the book of Scratch Beginnings, Adam met a few people that are homeless and going through life in poverty like James who had a bitter divorce and his wife took everything from him. Sgt. Mendoza a retired army veteran. Phil Coleman and Easy E. Marco the king of the shelter. Hustle Man who sold copies of the post and courier, local newspaper to have money in his pocket. The guy in the wheel chair who got hit by a car. The guy that talked about the war or the guy who got stabbed outside the shelter with a six-inch blade and came to the soup kitchen to show off his wound. He also met three different types of people in the shelter the mentally afflicted, the bums, and the victims of different circumstances that have no fault being perceptions of homelessness due to poverty. For many, homelessness and poverty is a vicious cycle that devastates lives of everyone that is affected. I believe that poverty shouldn’t be a life sentences. If there’s a will there is a way and anything can be accomplished if you want it. Adam never thought that being homeless was going to be very hard, sad, depressing, tiring, and difficult in surviving in the real world. Adam learned that he is the product of his surroundings, his families, his peers, and the environment. Homelessness and poverty can show realities, and misconceptions about what they both are about. Homelessness is in high rise due to financial fallout leaving people needing their basic necessities like food, shelter, and personal care.…

We begin this seminar with the development of a personal mission or vision statement. We use this statement in this seminar to emphasize that your time at the UW begins with dreams and visions you hold for the life that is still ahead of you. We ask you to write a mission statement that is reflective of who you are and what your sense of calling, purpose, vocation, or meaning of life. Mission statements are helpful for many reasons, but primarily they are used as a tool to encourage you to consciously reflect on who you are and what you are doing at the UW. As you progress through your educational experience here, you will find that you will take many side roads, you will wander off the path, hurry ahead of yourself, and even become unsure and hidden in the brambles. We have found that a personal mission statement is helpful when the way becomes cloudy; to return to a written statement of your essence and purpose in life can often help you forge your chosen path.…

The Music Industry Today is looked at as common musician's such as Eminem, A$AP Rocky, Gucci Mane, Blink-182 and of those listed, they're just a few that come straight to mind when thinking about todays generations. They may currently be idles of todays times, but what about the past generations of musician's? Over the past few decades the music industry has taken a switch and become completely different. Today we look at the music industry as being corrupt, as has shifted to swearing, drugs, and wrong messages. The youth is going through the stage of thinking its cool and learning about themselves, but this didnt just happen within the twenty-first century, all these trending topics have been going on for years. The amount of controversy over swearing in songs like the sex pistols in the 70's or the violence that broke out in crowds were bands would spit on their audiences in the 70's, this is all nothing new.…

Throughout the decades, media has expanded above the horizons. With advanced image editing software, the advertising industry has hit its peak on what each and every company want to portray audience to. Not just a perfect body, face, and complexion, the insecurity, self-esteem issues, and suicide, comes together in a package in which the cost is expensive. In November of 2000, the Campbell Soup Company launched a series of new ads for its television campaign. The ad included little boys and girls. The boys offered soup to the girls, while they declined it stating the reason, for they are watching their weight! That commercial immediately captured attention of many, for the concern of pre-pubescent girls already thinking about managing their weight at such young age(Perfect Illusions, 2000). The previous example is the exact reason, which proves my point on how media influences the society in a bad way. What factors of media contribute to strictly influencing our society? What should be done to ease the process? What kind of harm is the media bringing to the table for young women, teenagers, and adults? To get rid of the tragic messages, we all need to love ourselves more each day, and should not compare our bodies to the models on the TV screen.…

Tears ran slowly down my face as we rushed to my aunt’s house. I did not know what happened, but I was afraid to know. The car slowly came to a stop in front of my aunt’s house. All of my family from my mother’s side was there. We said hello to everyone and my mom said, “Wait out here. I will come out to get you when it is OK to come in.” I did as I was told I waited outside and talked to some of my cousins. About fifteen minutes later my mom came out and said, “Your aunt has cancer.” My face saddened! At first I was confused, but later I began to understand what cancer meant to me. Cancer meant death; a slow, horrible way to die.…
