There I was, just the age of six. My mom walked me to my first day of first grade. This was no kindergarten, that’s for sure. I was living in Seattle, Washington at the time. Our school started late that year because the teachers went on strike to get more money. Besides the late start, the only other event in first grade was we moved leaving all friends and family behind. To the lovely state of Idaho which is really boring compared to Seattle, Washington.…

My first day was, as my sister had predicted, not exemplary. The student that I was assigned to follow on my first was not the most accepted boy in the school. I, therefore, did not get the opportunity to meet as many people as I might have hoped. I was immediately associated with that boy. I did meet a few people, though. Abdula Aldik and Eric Cordero were among my first friends.…

January 13th, 2015, feels as if it was yesterday. It was the day I lost one of my best friends and a day I wish never happened. It all began as I was walking back to school with my friends from Walgreens, I got a call from my dad telling me “You need to run home and get your Carhartt and some gloves and a hat because Prince is sick and you might be out here for a while. Also, call you mom and see if she needs anything from the house to stay warm for tonight."…

The first day of school rolled around and I was so nervous. I was standing in the front office. I got assigned a tour guide you could say. She showed me around the school and where all my classes were. We talked and I found out that we had a lot in common. She offered for me to sit with her at lunch and remembering what my mom said, I agreed. She introduced…

I can remember the day when I first went to school at victor harbor primary school. It was scary because I didn’t know anyone at all. The first couple to of days I was nervous and scared because I didn’t have much friends and I was still trying to settle into the new school. As I got to know a few people I got a bit more confident and started to do more things with the people that helped me around the school and became good friends with them. Their names were Jacob, Taylor and Boyd. Starting school at victor harbor primary in year 7 was weird for me because at my last school I started high school in year 7, so moving to victor harbor meant that I had to go back to primary school again. As time went by I made a few more friends and started to hang around with them at lunch and played some games with them. I was only at the primary school for a term but It gave me enough time to make some friends before I went up to high school.…

September 27, 2007. I would forever etch this date in my memory. As soon as the airplane hit the landing strip, I knew my life would be different; the question is: for better or for worse, it was up to my hands. Not soon after I moved into the neighborhood where my aunt and grandma lives, they brought me to the local elementary school. My mom argued vehemently for me to be put in first grade, but the principal could only shake his head, since I already turned 7 years of age and had to be enrolled in second grade. So there I was: standing outside of room 2-227, looking as awkward and shy as a kid on his first day of school, but the feeling of butterflies in my stomach was intensified tenfold since I could not even introduce myself properly in English. Immigrating to a foreign country at the age of 7, when most kids would have already learned basic grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation, I did not have the luxury of extra time to catch up to everyone else. To make up for this, I had to work harder than all my peers. While my classmates might take an afternoon nap or watch SpongeBob once they got home, I was stuck at home learning the alphabet and its pronunciation.…

My first year of high school was one of the best but at the same time one of my hardest years. I remember falling in love for the first time with a boy my mom completely hated and escaping from my house at night to see him (this is the reason why my window is now sealed). It was during this time that we as a family received the news that my mom was sick. I remember how we had to unite and be strong as a family to help my mom go through those hard moments and this made my view about my family change. Thanks to this, I started to appreciate what I had.…
