My Kinesiography
It was the summer before my senior year when my hockey coach looked me in the eyes and said, “John, we don't have a spot for you on the team.” Immediately a feeling of complete devastation and anger coaxed over my body as I stormed out of the room; but after collecting my emotions, I decided to stay involved with the team and be a student manager. I didn't realize it at the time, but deciding to manage that team was a defining moment in my life because it helped me discover my true passion and vocation. While I was a manager, I spent a lot of time with my school’s athletic training staff and got to see them in action every day. Our staff was constantly working to help get injured athletes back on the court, field, or ice. I had never seen …show more content…
I was dedicated to study kinesiology and eventually pursue a career in which I could help athletes get back on their feet and back in the game. The major of kinesiology is without a doubt one of the broadest majors out there because it is what most people call a graduate school major. This means that there are limited opportunities for a person with just a kinesiology bachelor’s degree, and to land a job in the work force, a kinesiology major much go to some form of graduate school. However, the field of kinesiology does not hold anyone back when it comes to graduate school. Kinesiology majors can attend medical school, dental school, physician’s assistant school, nurse practitioner school, and many more graduate schools that relate to the human body. Being that this major is so broad, I had to investigate the intricacies of all the possible career paths that I found of interest. While researching, I found that the easiest way to understand the intricacies of a career is to look at the scholarly journals and magazines relating to that specific career. The scholarly journals helped me gain a broader understanding of the career because most of them were case reports about patients.

“Whenever a new discovery is reported to the scientific world, they first say, “it is probably not true.” Therefore, when the truth of the new proposition has been demonstrated beyond question, they say, “yes, it may be true but it is not important.” Finally when sufficient time has elapsed to fully evidence its importance, they say, “yes, surely it is important but it is no longer new.”.” –Michel De Montaigne, 16th century. My entire life has always revolved around sports. While growing up, I sprained my ankle, wrist, had tendonitis, and then topped it off with a severe concussion. It’s safe to say that I basically lived in the athletic trainer’s rehabilitation facility, as well as the Houston Methodist hospital. Going through different types of therapy programs throughout high school was what made me realize that I wanted to become a physical therapist. I knew the pain that you had to endure in order to get better and the mental aspect of recovering wasn’t any easier. You are constantly afraid of reinjuring yourself and undergoing constant negative thoughts about not being good enough. You go from sharing a very strong bond with your team to barely being able…

It seemed that all my years of hard work had all come down to this moment. All those days that I would spend hours at the gym, making sure I had made all my shots and perfected every dribble move, not even bothering to take Sunday off because if I wanted to go somewhere with basketball, I would have to eat, sleep and breathe basketball. I refreshed the inbox of my email, and there it was, the decision that would make or break my basketball career. I had tried out for one of the most elite club basketball teams in Wisconsin, Oshkosh Flight 14’s team. I think I clicked on that email about five-hundred times in anticipation while it loaded. I skimmed the first sentence and my jaw dropped on my desk. The words were tattooed to my eyelids, I could…
