Growing up I excelled in every educational aspect of school. However the stereotype for someone of my skin color did not allow for me to be both Mexican and smart. My Hispanic peers began to exclude me; the most common way they did that was by taking away my identity as a Mexican. I heard “Diego you white” an uncountable number of times throughout my schooling. I noticed that my grades and vocabulary would trigger that comment so I began to change the way I acted in order to fit in. It was not until recently that I realized the fault in changing and found a peaceful merge between the two speech communities.…
The United States is the country of immigrants with different believes, values and traditions. Hispanic culture is one of the largest national, ethnic groups living in America. According to US census bureau, in 2011 Hispanic people take approximately17.2% of the population of America and by the year of 2050 the Hispanic people will be reaching 30% of all the people living in America (CDC, 2013). Knowing that, healthcare workers should be knowledgeable and competent of different traditions, believes, values and practices related to health when it comes to providing good care for Hispanic community.…
It is difficult to explain what being Hispanic means to me. Since my Hispanic heritage has influenced my life from the beginning, I am sure that without that heritage, I would be a completely different person. All the lessons that my family has taught me, as well as all the significant life experiences related to my Hispanic traditions, will always be a part of who I…
Hispanic families and children are presented with many obstacles especially in accessing health care. The language barrier and lack of insurance make it difficult for them to access sustainable medical care. As a result, they become prone to communal diseases that are either water or air-borne. Hispanics and Latinos normally live in communities where their culture values relationships and the communal unit. This makes them more exposed to health hazards especially when there is an outbreak of a particular disease. Hispanic children enjoy playing and eating together in groups; whenever a child is affected with a communicable disease, their peers become affected. The lack of access to sustainable health care makes it even worse for them since they have to rely on caregivers to attend to them (Delese,2003). Moreover, the marginalized Hispanic community normally lacks the economic power required to take care of their families effectively.…
It helped me realize and analyze a different culture. In Ruben Martinez, Crossing Over the book tells about how life is in Mexico and how their tradition are different from the US. The migrants who are in US are creating a new Hispanic-influenced culture that is histrionically altering both Mexico and the US. Martinez makes a claim that tradition culture has not disappear. I agree because we have many different cultures in the US. I will prove this by exploring Mexican-American culture.…
Some discrimination that Hispanic and Latinos deal with still today is the difficulty to get good paying jobs. Because many of them do not speak english well and have little to no education the jobs they get are in most cases low wage high labor jobs. The sources of this prejudice and discrimination is employers as well as general population. Hispanics and Latinos are looked upon as different especially if they were not born in the US. In addition, in many films Hispanics are often prtrayed as lazy, hyper-sexual, or violent which is simply untrue and not very different from any other ethnic…
Differences in culture and lifestyle tend to be shown in how many; resources, money, food and a good health plan, people have. As a result, this is something that can help or affect people that have PTSD. Studies shows that Latino community that are illegal in the USA are more bound to obtain PTSD from any trauma than Caucasian and African-American, who can access any therapy available for them, some of this Latino people has only their families are some other loved one to depend…
There are both positive and negative aspects of Hispanic culture, regarding racial stereotypes in our country. Everybody inevitably assumes that because you are of a Hispanic race, that you automatically know how to speak Spanish, as well as read and write. Media such as television shows, film and movies, often show the Hispanic person speaking Spanish. However, there are some cases where the individuals are natural born American citizens. What does that mean for these individuals? Some of these people were not taught the Spanish language, or their family is of Hispanic heritage but they were raised in an American society, which they have adapted American traditions. So their family never took the time to teach their children a second language.…
America’s healthcare system has shown an increasing need for professional nurses who are trained and skilled in providing culturally competent care. With diverse cultures from all over the world each has their own beliefs and views towards health, illness, and healing. For today’s nurses to provide competent care they must recognize and respect the traditions and beliefs of each culture. Nurses must understand who they themselves are and put aside their personal opinions and beliefs to care for each patient without judgment. In trying to gain knowledge on a culture I wasn’t familiar with I interviewed my friend AW who is a native born Mexican American. Her insight into the Mexican culture and their views of health, illness, and healing provided many similarities and differences than that of the American culture. With Americas’ largest minority population being from Mexican backgrounds, nurses must be culturally competent towards their beliefs and customs to provide them with more effective and positive care.…

* Many women learn how to calculate their ovulation when they first talk to a doctor about birth control. But some may still question whether they can get pregnant if they aren't ovulating. The answer to that question is not as straightforward as it seems. One would think that if a woman isn't ovulating, she can't get pregnant. This is only partially true. Generally, a woman isn't fertile if she isn't ovulating. If she isn't ovulating, she has no egg present to be fertilized outside the ovulation period. The confusion comes when trying to decipher when the ovulation period really is. Sometimes a woman can ovulate beyond what she considers her normal ovulating period, and she can become pregnant outside of her calculated fertility window.…
Living in California, we become exposed to the Mexican culture through friends, neighbors and business associates. Wether its Mexican food, festivals, dances, music, clothes, language etc. When it comes to Mexico as a country, besides its beautiful resorts, Mexico displays rich history, excellent cuisine, Spanish colonial attraction, indigenous wisdom, and hospitality. The Impact of Western Culture on Eating Disorders and Poor Body Image in Hispanic Americans…
I have always loved parts of Native American culture. Growing up, I read a mystery series about a girl named Mandy, and throughout the series her family is introduced. Part of her family is Cherokee, and they are peaceful Christians, at least in this series. I also watched a number of shows such as The Lone Ranger that showed Native Americans in a positive and peaceful light. Of course I also learned about the warrior history of certain Indian tribes, and how they were mistreated by outsiders while I was in middle school and high school. I did not know about the term vocables, but since I learned it I have used it quite often, because it seems like popular, modern music is now venturing to use vocables, so I pointed that out to my friends.…
I am a part of the growing population of people of mixed descent, and am both privileged and punished by relating to my Mexican heritage but not resembling the stereotypical Hispanic. Most people aren't aware, even in these times, that you can be Hispanic whether you are as white as paper or as dark as its ashes. I have grown up privy to all the privileges of a comfortable lifestyle, typically among Caucasians, both in my neighborhood and honors classes in my rural town. Yet I am reminded of my heritage by the food I eat, the style of music I wake up to on a Sunday morning, and traveling to a dusty, dog-filled village in Mexico to bury my grandfather.…
