My Foundations Lab
What were the suggested next steps in your MyFoundationsLab® Learning Path? * *
My suggested next steps were to study the sentence skills. The sentence skill section was the only section I didn’t master in. I am aware of my writing skills and how I can improve on them. I will be working on run ons as well. I have been out of school 10 years now so I know that there are a lot of things I need to learn again or brush up on. * * *
How do the skills apply to your academic life?

* These skills apply to my academic life being that I am currently enrolled in online courses which require lots of writing. We all use words, vocabulary and writing to express ourselves. We communicate verbally and in writing. I would like to have a conversation with my instructor and fellow class mates without coming across as illiterate. * * *
How do the skills apply to your professional life? * * Applying your skills professionally is very important. You want to make sure that you’re representing the company well. I want to make sure that I correct my writing skills so that when I go to apply for a position or type up my resume there are no mistakes. I understand that no one is perfect but I definitely don't want to come across as stupid neither. * * *
Were you surprised by the results? Why or why not?

I was surprised because in my everyday life I didn’t make it a priority to correct my writing flaws. I was surprised that I mastered majority. I know this is grade school skills but being out of school 10 years you tend to forget a lot. I plan to work hard to master all aspects of writing. I am determined to pick up where I left off and become a better

Communication skills are very important to personal or professional life. Manuscriptedit (Dec.2011) says, “Communicating the intended message clearly and effectively is an important skill, which is often a key factor in deciding the chances of success.” I feel I need to improve that skill, maybe because I’m a leaner of the English language - which isn’t my mother one - and I feel like my vocabulary needs to be improved. College is being a great help though but even before I was organising my time and taking a few hours during the week to read a book, newspapers or magazine.…

Overall, my experience taking English 106-H was fulfilled and I truly enjoyed my time in class. What were once weaknesses, slowly, but surely became strengths. Thus, it was through my weaknesses that helped me develop my writing skills, making me a stronger writer. Through free writing, word traps, and ideas of my own, I was able to implement those strategies into my writing. Nevertheless, I have reached my goal, but still will continue to strive for even stronger writing through out all of my courses at Lycoming College.…

Personally, I’ve always felt I was a decent writer in all aspects regarding research and personal narratives. Considering those are subjects that interest me and that I love to read about. I struggle the most when it comes to making my writing hold a deeper or hidden message when the topics I am told to write about don’t interest me. Having to do rhetorical analysis with old literature and having to explain the main idea was my number one struggle in AP language and composition senior year. But other than that I felt, throughout high school, I enjoyed writing and taking a majority of the writing classes my school had to offer, not only because it was required but because it was something that teachers and myself felt I did acceptable work.…

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

I used to believe I was a good writer. Throughout my elementary school education, creative writing dominated curriculum which allowed my extremely creative mindset to thrive. In middle school, I developed an elitist mentality about my writing ability. Believing that I reached my academic peak, I felt no need to sharpen my writing skills, causing me to become close minded to critique or other writing styles. Upon entering high school, I still clung to the idea that I was the best, but after my first week of class, I realized how weak my writing skills were in contrast to those of other students. Now, I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and hope to have come far from my middle school self.…

Throughout the year, my writing has had significant improvements, compared to where I began. First, I began this semester fairly confident in my writing abilities. I thought that I had a strong grasp on writing concepts that include: transition words, literary devices, proper grammar techniques, correct paper writing format. In contrast, I felt that I began the year with a weak vocabulary, which has always been one of my weaker areas, If I were to rank myself on day one of class, without knowing all of the material we were going to cover, I would rank my writing skills an eight out of ten.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…
