My First Journal Entry
9/2/16
Hello my name is Lexi and this is my first journal entry in Lang arts class. I'm going to be writing about my experience in 8th grade. 8th grade has gone very well so far, I knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. But after the first week I was a pro at getting stuff organized very quickly. I was doing good at getting some assignments in and getting to class on time. Now that we are at the top of the school (Even though our hallway is on the bottom floor) we need to be good role models for the 7th and 6th graders that are also starting school with us. I really do hope to get all my homework in on time because in 6th and 7th grade I was always turning in assignments late. Well that is all I have for my first journal entry, bye.

The date was June 14, 2034. I was flying to London, England with my private jet. It was a beautiful day. The clouds were puffy and white, the sun was shining, and there was no wind. Then all of a sudden, there was a lot of turbulence. The plane was going crazy going left, then right, then back to the left. My pilot told me to not panic and that everything is going to be fine, but I was having cold feet. The turbulence became so wild, the pilot announced that the plane will have to land on the nearest ground.…

I believe that the art a civilization leaves behind can provide great insight about ideas that were important to the members of the community. One example that immediately comes to mind is the tallit, which is a sacred garment with its roots in in the Jewish community. It is popularly referred to as a prayer shawl. Over the years, I have acquired several tallis (plural form of tallit). Certainly, the functionality of the garment’s use during prayer and worship is paramount. However, I believe it can also be considered as a work of art because it requires particular skill to make, and the finished product is nothing short of amazing. Furthermore, the details found in the varieties of tallis reflect elements significant to different sects in Judaism. For example, Orthodox Jewish congregations that follow the hasidic tradition typically use prayer shawls with dark-colored stripes, as opposed to brighter-colored stripes as seen on tallis used in some Messianic Jewish congregations (Mosley, 1998). All tallis contain tzit-tzit, which are intricately knotted fringes found on the corners of the tallit. One of the most beautiful features of the tallit is the attarah (Francis, 2007). This a panel found along one horizontal border of the tallit which typically contains the scripture from the book of Numbers, chapter fifteen, in which God instructed the Jewish people to wear the tallit (Moseley, 1998). The atarah is striking because the Hebrew lettering of the scripture is in gold or silver threading. Each end of the atarah also contains some other symbolism, such as a myrtle tree to represent Hadassah, who is more commonly referred to as Queen Esther. These symbols also contain gold or silver threading. How magnificent! In short, the spiritual significance is not the only element that can be regarded. To me, the craftsmanship of a prayer shawl makes it a work of art.…

The short story, “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’brien, was my favorite reading of this week. The author states what the company is carrying, as well as emotional burdens that they carry. I think that theme of this story can be summarized as “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. As I stated in the discussion, I think this story makes a profound point about trauma and emotional stress. Physical burdens are easily observable. For example, when people see someone in a wheelchair their thoughts are most likely automatically sympathetic. However, when people see someone having a panic attack they might just assume that the person is overreacting. Nobody knows what emotional burdens someone holds. Therefore, it is wrong to judge people on appearance alone and assume that one knows the full story.…

On an overcast afternoon in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, March 28, 2003, Richard Okumoto intently studied a set of hard-copy accounting documents called “adjusting journal entries” spread out on his desk. He had been appointed chief financial officer (CFO) of Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (ESI), a multi-million dollar equipment manufacturer, just a few weeks earlier. Okumoto was in the midst of closing the company’s books for the third quarter of fiscal year 2003, which ended February 28. An experienced executive who had served as CFO for several other technology firms, Okumoto was familiar with the task, which normally would be routine. But this time, he felt that something was seriously amiss. When reviewing the company’s recent results, he had noticed a sharp dip in accrued liabilities between the two quarters ending May 31 (the last quarter of the 2002 fiscal year) and August 31 (the first quarter of the current fiscal year). Now, looking at the detailed journal entries his staff had provided, he noticed that several significant accounting entries had been made around midnight on September 12, 2002. The entries made that September evening had significantly changed the company’s results for the quarter ending August 31, 2002, a few days before they were reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission. He later recalled:…

Wow I’ve learned so many things in this class. Mr. Huston has taught me many things not just about reading writing and speaking but about life. I love the way he lets us express ourselves in our journals each and everyday. Everyday when I walk into the classroom and get my journal I begin to write the quote of the day down and then to my bellwork. The quote of the day is a Quote that ties into the lesson. Our bellwork is writing about our last 23 hours. So basically you write what you have done since you left Mr. Huston's class the previous day. After bellwork Mr. Huston reads a short story out of the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. Once hes done we write in our journals what we learned about the short story. Then you can share it with the class. Normally you go up to the podium and read it the way you wrote it. Everyday when I look over I see the class motto and it reminds me that if I try my best and give all my effort to stride for perfection then I will grasp excellence in the process. Mr. Huston has made my first quarter…

In high school, we grow so much as people that we tend to forget where we started. This applies to not only our personalities, but our academic abilities as well. I suppose this is obvious, as it is four years of school, but the magnitude of this growth never fails to surprise me. As I looked back at the writing pieces I created in ninth grade, with misplaced commas and awkward wording, all I can think of is how different my writing is today. The poem I wrote was created as a way to track and remember the changes I encountered each year.…

During this class I have made two self- discoveries that will positively impact my career goals. Those self- discoveries has helped to mold, and shape me into a student that I have never thought I would be. Those discoveries were that I am an organized learner, because I made a study plan to help me determine when, and how I would study. Being that I have five children, I had to make sure that I had set a schedule so that my course work including study time would not affect my family time and take away from spending time with my children and fiance`. Since these are the competing priorities in my life right now learning to obtain trust and consistency in the home while I have been attending school has also improved because not only do I see my success so does my children and fiancé. Knowing that I had that support also has made it possible to do my best in school, setting the pace for them to do the same in school also, whether it be good grades, sports, etc. I know that they will continue to be good at what they do and have proven to do so time after time.…

“The First Day”, by Edward P. Jones is pretty simple story to read. It is not complicated if only reader understand the concept of how adults who don’t have ability to read or write have to get through their lives harder than ones who have that kind of ability. In eighth grade it was a very fun year. I still remember my teacher Mr. Gonzalez who made my class so fun and interesting. He was by far one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. He was chill and laid back but at the same he taught us. He made us do free writing in a journal every day for two minutes. It was a great experience doing journals because it taught me how to think about a topic fast, and just start writing. By the end of the year I was writing three hundred something words in two minutes. It was a great increase from the begining from the beginning of the year.…
