Both of my parents were raised in Artibonite, Haiti. My father was one of eight siblings. He was family orientated, smart, ambitious, caring, and funny. He was always searching for a better life for our family. In late 1980’s he found a way to migrate to the U.S where he then worked diligently to bring our family to the states. He spoke four different languages and was always smiling. Before my father passed away we had a strong bond, our sense of humor allowed us to communicate. When he was not working he enjoyed spending time with his family. My Mother is ambitious, disciplined, compassionate, and faithful. Throughout out my childhood my mother was the discipliner in the house. She was unable to receive a formal education in Haiti; she

My mother, who stood 5 feet 7 inches, caramel-brown skin, round face with high cheekbones, and weighting about 157 pounds; was a single parent of three kids, two girls and one boy. She was very firm when it came to her children. She would not allow any grade in her house below a B-. She pushed my sister and me the hardest when it came to education. Her favorite saying was “You can’t sit around and depend on no one to take care of you; you need to get out there and get it yourself.” My mother dropped out of high school when she was pregnant with my sister. Sometimes I think she was harder on us because she did not graduate from high school and she realized how hard it was to have kids and not have at least a high school education.…

The main reason I returned to school is to be able to be the first in my immediate family to graduate from college. My mother raised my two sisters and me as a single parent with very limited resources. I barely ever saw her due to that fact that she had to work at two different jobs. She wasn’t the most affectionate mother but showed her love through actions rather than words. Very seldom did we have deep conversations but one conversation that stands out in my mind is when she said to me “Fernando, I am sorry I can’t provide the same things your friends have. I didn’t even have the opportunity to continue my education. I only went to school up to 6th grade because my mother forced me to work or I would have to leave the house. I want you to have a better future. That is why I brought you all to the…

K., Crouter, A. C., Updegraff, K. A., & McHale, S. M. (2011). In my observation, mothers’ disciplined their daughters and sons in the same manner where as the father is stricter with the sons than he is with his daughters. Growing up, I remember my mother telling us “just wait until your dad gets home” and then when he did arrive home he would sit us down and talk with us about the problem. The possibility of the time children spend with their mother is why she is considered many times, in charge of raising the children. The culture and identity in started with her with terms of endearment when one is born, words of encouragement when the times are tough. Many times growing up, I never knew that we were poor because our parents shielded this from their children. It is until this day, that the lessons they taught my siblings and myself are deeply embedded in my…

I plan to use all of the resources needed to complete my degree. My mom shared how she would organize her binder with the course requirements as the first page. She would place it in a sheet protector sleeve to keep it clean as she would visit it often to keep her eyes on the goal. As mother completed each course she would put her final grade beside the course and would check it off the list as completed. This was mom’s way of being accountable to completing what she started. My mother is another strong supporter of my goals. She completed her Master’s degree while raising children and working full time. I would help my mother type her papers for school as she was exhausted most days but she would remind me, “Work hard now play later and you can choose the playground that you desire to play on”. It now makes more sense to me why she was determined to finish her…

I had a long discussion with my dad today about religion, but I also got a touch of his childhood. As the discussion progressed, I came to the realization that I know nearly nothing about my father my whole life. This was one of the first times he actually spoke to me about his past in any sort of detail at all my whole life. The only thing he would tell me as I grew up was that his father passed away when my dad was nine and that his father was an honest man. I still have much, much more to learn about my dad's past, but the things he told me have made me so grateful to be born in America and to have such high hopes for a brighter future.…

Every morning, I would feel irritated with my house being too loud and too noisy as the sounds of the pans and pots from the kitchen would echo in my ears, causing me to wake up. My mother never forgets to prepare breakfast for me despite leaving for work at dawn and returns home at dusk. When I feel thirsty while I am at school, there is always a full bottle of water inside of my backpack to keep me feeling hydrated. During the times I struggled with homework, my mother would encourage to do my best, support me, and try to help in as many ways as possible even if she did not understand the materials I was learning. My mother, who plays a vital and significant role as my motivation and inspiration, is someone I strive to emulate. I have noticed many of her…
