My Experience As A Dental Hygienist
This past year at the University of New Haven has been an interesting and memorable experience. The accomplishments that I have made during my first year as a dental hygiene student at UNH was that I achieved a 4.0 gpa for both the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters. Due to my academic excellence I am delighted to share that I made it into the dean's list. Another accomplishment I achieved was the substantial knowledge that I gained, thus far, to become a successful dental hygienist. The Introductory to Dental Hygiene course and the Anatomy and Physiology course that I attended were my most preferred subjects. Anatomy and Physiology was enormously interesting because I learned the various types of systems that reside in our body, which allow the body to function properly. The Intro to Dental Hygiene course had introduced me a vast knowledge of …show more content…
Being enrolled at NCC had taught me several fundamental skills, such as: time management, organization, different studying methods, working in a team setting (which is critical in any dental hygiene program), and much more. The transition to UNH was somewhat difficult at first. I had a rough time keeping up with the fast pace that was taught in a four-year college. Although I did an excellent job of managing my time at NCC, it was challenging for me to develop a method to balance my time at UNH with completing my assignments, studying for exams, and allocating time to relax my mind and body. Currently, I am doing a great job of staying on track with my major. I have completed all prerequisites for my major and with the rate I am excelling, I should be graduating in about two years. The only difficulty I was experiencing, which I mentioned earlier, was the pace in which my courses were taught. Nevertheless, I was able to overcome this obstacle by prioritizing my time, which helped me stay consistent with the pace of the

Dentists and dental hygienists need to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and confident in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The treatment of this infectious disease needs to be performed in a way that minimizes risks to other patients and health care professionals. Previous studies have shown an unwillingness of health care professionals in treating such individuals. This study examined the effectiveness of a training program for dental and dental hygiene students at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD) in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this program is to give students knowledge in treating HIV patients, to reduce the risk of transmission of this infectious disease to dental staff and others, and to reduce the stigma associated with treating these patients. This particular study addressed students’ comfort level in treating HIV/AIDS patients in three categories: homosexual/bisexual individuals, intravenous drug users, and individuals who have had blood…

Next, I want to become a dental hygienist because it is a good paying job. Lastly, I want to be able to move out and live comfortably. Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is not like the other motivation theories, this is because he believed an individual’s motives range from biological to individual to social needs. Maslow believed that an individual must accomplish the needs at the base of the pyramid first, before reaching the needs at the top. I believe my goals do align with Maslow’s theory. Passing my college classes fit in with the esteem section of the pyramid because it would bring a sense of accomplishment and confidence. Becoming a dental hygienist will satisfy the security section of the pyramid because I would be employed. Then, moving out and living comfortably would satisfy the physiological section because I would have a house which would provide warmth and shelter.…

I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working…

My mother’s conversation with me that night began to slowly repeat in my head. I knew this was a great opportunity and getting accepted would make her happy. In order to get accepted into the career center there are requirements that I had to fulfil. These included a 2.0 GPA, one or two more electives, and a application form completed and handed in to the guidance counselor. My thoughts instantly got interrupted by my best friend named Nawal. She was a little taller than me, very diligent, and considerate. We began discussing whether or not we got accepted and if there were any seats left to join the dental assisting program.…
