My Ethnography Exercises
For Part 2 of my Ethnography exercise, I chose to go to the Village Tavern in Carol Stream. I was with my family each time I went there. The main reason I chose to tell about my experience and observation there is that I didn’t think anybody else would choose this and my family’s interactions with the people and staff there were different each time.
My mom has a gluten allergy and whenever she goes out to a restaurant she usually must look at a gluten-free menu or find something that she can have there. Well, the first few times we went my mom ordered an entrée that came with a salad and she asked what dressings were gluten-free. Whenever she asks servers this question she always gets a weird, surprised, and sometimes judgmental look. Even

Maureen, a neighbor and close friend of mine, is 86-years old and was born during The Great Depression. I decided to interview Maureen to find out about her culture, any intercultural communication she has had, the subgroups in which she is a member, challenges and stereotypes she has faced, and all she has endured throughout her life. Maureen is an older generation and belongs to different subgroups from ones in which I belong; The Great Depression, WWII, The Silent Generation, handicapped, and stepmother. These topics are explored in more detail as we discussed her life.…

Specifically, Boas, in The Methods of Ethnology, argued against the various traditional evolutionary theories proposed by Morgan, Marx, Tylor and Spencer. Stating simply that these theories had a particular resilience, but lacked any sort of empirical evidence, Boas argued that the evolutionary theory was based on the counterfactual assumption that our culture was the most advanced and all others were merely following us (Boas, 134). After attacking the diffusionists by noting that their data was not competent enough, methodological difficulties, he responded to the view that historical particularism (Historical particularism argued that each society is a collective representation of its unique historical past. It showed that societies could reach the same level of cultural development through different paths) was atheoretical. How things are and how they come to exist can give only broad outlines of chronological events. Hence cultures are dynamic and in constant flux; every phenomenon is not only an effect, but also a cause. (Boas, 137) A point, taken to the extreme by Kroeber, but also put forth by Boas was that certain problems may be solved in only particular ways. Because humans are similar in their ``infrastructure'', they would tend to solve these problems in similar ways, leading towards the creation of similar traits. Hence, it is not about cultural achievement, but rather about particular conditions that exist at the moment when the new effect is obtained…

The Baka from Baka: People of the Forest, and the Nenetsi from Nenetsi Samoyeds: Nomads of the Siberian Tundra are two groups that live in vastly different climates. The former are a hunter-gatherer or forager society, and live in the rainforests of the Cameroon, and the later, are pastoralists in the Siberian Tundra of Russia. It can be assumed that due to these huge differences in their environments, the two cultures will be incredibly dissimilar, but that is not necessarily the case. While they do have differences, they also share some similar aspects. They are similar in their treatment of children and relationships with nature, but they differ in communication styles.…

I chose to do my ethnographic study at the Intergenerational Spring Seminar sponsored by the Unitarian Universalists United Nations Office (UU-UNO). The theme for this year’s conference was The Colors of Inequality: Costs and Consequences Conference. This conference took place at three locations throughout New York City. The three locations it took place at were All Souls Church (NYC), the Salvation Army International Social Justice Commission building, and the United Nations Headquarters. All Souls Church served as our living quarters and dining hall when we had meals at the conference. For the purposes of this assignment, I will no longer mention All Souls Church because a requirement for…

Restaurants pride themselves by stating that they are “All natural, 100% organic”. Because of the push for healthy eating, someone who has been diagnosed with celiac disease is segmented and organized into a person who is more-so interested in being healthy and eating healthy. When one states that they are “gluten-free” it’s looked more at as a lifestyle choice and not by medical reasoning which has caused an issue for people who can’t have gluten. For instance, when someone once told me that they are gluten-free, I asked them to specify whether it was a lifestyle choice or if they had celiac disease.…

According to the textbook, ethnomethodology is “the study of the commonsense knowledge that people use to understand the situations in which they find themselves.” For this requirement, I had to “break the rules” during a specific activity and observe the results. I chose a rather safe approach to this requirement, breaking the rules of how I should behave when speaking to someone. I tried this out on two people, my boyfriend, and an acquaintance. Usually, it is not expected and probably considered rude to suddenly grab the face of someone you are talking to and then attempt to continue the conversation that way. I think this is an unspoken rule amongst many people that you should not act odd or touch someone’s face in casual conversation.…

I feel like the information is easy to read on the graph, and that the caption captures all that is required for a view who just saw the graph to understand. I did not know either or not to say the numbers were the log numbers of the one from Table 11.1, so I decided to add that they were the log numbers just to be safe.…

Welcome to the blue collar city of Buffalo, New York. I find myself in my great Uncle Wills old brick home in the center of South Buffalo. The house has the familiar smell of old people, in the foyer are a pair of work boots the leather old and worn, the soles nearly depleted. A layer of dust has formed on the boots that have remained untouched for decades. As I move closer to the kitchen I can hear the recognizable sound of stainless steel clinking on ceramic, the rhythmic noise can only be one thing; Uncle Will’s stirring his ever present cup of joe. I know this interview is going to take a bit so I head to the fridge to find a cold beverage. Inside the fridge, prune juice I thought “ugh”, tap water will do.…

For my ethnography assignment I chose to study the social behavior of student commuters how they impact the social environment at San Jose State University. The main focus of this ethnography is to study the social atmosphere among San Jose State students. San Jose State is referred as a commuter school due to high number of local students from the bay area that commute from home to school and vice versa. The whole point of having positive social atmosphere amongst college students is about branching out and increasing relations with others. However, this isn’t the case with San Jose State students because many of the students that are accepted are commuter students. I also happen to be a commuter which obligates me to relate the various backgrounds…
