The aim of this unit is to reflect upon, justify and evaluate two assessment methods and decisions in my specialist area, which is ESOL. The activities chosen as examples of tasks based on the assessment methods used in my observation (multiple choice and oral questions) are part of an ESOL entry 1 diagnostic assessment pack available at the talent (training adult literacy, ESOL and numeracy teachers) website. The activities provide an opportunity to observe the skills students are using in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The skills are all assessed in the same context (Samira’s life). As an ESOL entry 1 tutor, I found these materials suitable and easy to incorporate into my…

To provide the suitable service and achieve optimal result, teachers and administrators must identify their ELL students and place them in classroom that best fit with their abilities. In an interview conducted with Miss Fabiaschi, an academic dean at a charter school in my district, she said that at her school parents are providing information on home language on the application. Then they use the CELDT (California English Language Development Test) to determine which level of English proficiency for their students. She added, there are two types of ELLs, the new enrollments, which are kindergartens who enroll in school for the first time or students of higher grade levels who transferred from different schools, districts, or states; and the second type are the returning ELL students.…

Learning English was neither easy nor hard because I was in the environment in people who speak English; everything around me speaks English. As consequences for all the hard work, I did not have any time to do enough extra-curriculums or even join sport team in high school; for instant: NMHS (National Math Honor Society), NSHS (National Math Honor Society), biomedical club, and finally the soccer team or the tennis team. I made these decisions, so I can finish high school in four years with the best grades and needed knowledge possible. In the end of my sophomore year, I finish the ESOL program in the first two years: I went from ESOL 2 in 9th grade to ESOL 4 in 10th grade, finishing the ESOL program with an improvement of my English…

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is a significant sector of adult education. Language acquisition by adults is language learning, a deliberate, diligent, intellectual process that rarely, if ever, results in the total fluency acquired so naturally by any small child, regardless of intellectual ability or personal motivation. Language acquisition by children and language learning by adults are strikingly different phenomena. The techniques and tools concerning adults are also highly differentiated than those utilized for children, reflecting the divergent abilities, motivation and needs of these students.…

As for English I have been developing it ever since I was 9 years old , even before learning it in school I was mesmerized by this amazing language !! And as my curiosity grew , my desire to master this language grew too ! I had a very good background before learning it in school . In my class I was always ahead of my classmates in English because I loved it . After 2 years I started making friends with other American girls and that improved my skills . Movies , novels and websites , It all helped me to speak English fluently aside from what I was learning in school . My family wasn't financially able to get me a seat in a language institute , which is why I haven't done the TOFEL exam yet . Still I managed to teach myself . That makes me confident that if I get chosen for the scholarship and learn Korean and in an institute I'll be able to achieve more !!…
