My Dad: My Mentor and Guide
Commemorative Speech

Good morning every one
I want to start by asking you this
What is your definition of a great man?
Is it a man that goes above and beyond to provide for his family and loved ones? Or is it a man that teaches u invaluable lessons in life every chance that he gets, Or is it a man that faces difficulties and always manage to light a smile on your face and prove to you that there’s in fact a silver lining in behind dark clouds?
I think all these traits make up a great man and I have the honor to call one of them my father, Venancio Ang. He was born in the Southern Part of the Philippines, Davao City. His mom was that of a Spanish Descendant and His dad was Chinese, which makes him a Chinoy. “Which means Chinese Filipino”
My dad has taught me great lessons in life, and I am here because I want to share with you about all the lessons in life he has taught me and the most valuable which I kept with me and the type of inspiration he gave my family.
I want to start of with the lessons in life, like I said there were many of them but the one that really stuck to me was hard work, and family.
Hard work, without hard work you don’t reach your goals, and that/s something my dad would always tell me. My dad was all about using this and using these. And he would do it on a constant basis, all day every day 24/7. And he taught my brother and I what it is to really work hard for what you want in life and how good you feel after you see the fruits of your labor.
And finally, Family. I’m grateful to be brought up in such a kind and loving family. Growing up my dad used to always tell me that a family is where home is. Which is very true, because when I go through life’s challenges the first thing I think of is them. He has taught me how important foundation is in order to keep me grounded. My dad always used to say, “Twirly, remember at the end of the day it all comes down to family.” This world isn’t easy. And our lives are defined by how we

“Sometimes the poorest man leaves his children the richest inheritance. “ This quote was said by Ruth E. Renkel, and I think this quote describes my dad the best. I think this quote describes him because even though we have never had a lot he teaches me how to be thankful for what I do have and to not take anything for granted. My dad teaches me a lot of values like to always have faith, love, and be thankful. He teaches me to have faith because he knows if I have faith then I can get through struggle that I face. He also knows if he can not be there for me that it is okay because God will always be there to protect me and love me. I also personally think that if you have faith you can get through a lot because you always will have it with you to help guide you. Another value that he teaches me to have is love. He teaches me to show love to everyone around me and to love everything that I have. I think to have love makes you a strong person. I think this because if you love someone who has hurt you, then it makes you strong because you overcame something big and forgave that person. Lastly, he teaches me to always be thankful for what I have and to never take something for granted. I think it is really important to always be thankful because often times I do not appreciate all that I have. I also think it is important to not take anything for granted. I think this because when you do not appreciate something that you have, then it might be gone one day and you will miss having it, because you never realized how much it meant to you and never took the time to be thankful for it. My dad is the best because I know he will always be there to support me and love me. He is always there to help me with sports, homework, and in general anything I need help with. I think my dad has taught me so much and has taught me how to be the best person I could ever grow up to be, and I can not thank him enough for that. These are all the reasons that my dad is the…

If I was given the opportunity to speak in front of a crowd I would talk about the importance of setting goals in your life. I believe success comes from meeting the goals you have strived to obtain. When I was younger and just starting to grasp the concept of doing things on my own, the word success was very forbidding to me. I wanted to be successful and to make people around me proud, but I wasn’t sure how to go about achieving such things. I never just sat down and thought about what exactly I needed to do to make me successful, I just knew I wanted success out of life. If I had the chance to talk to a younger generation, or maybe even older people who are still struggling, I would tell them to take some time, sit down, and seriously think about what specific things they needed to do that would make them successful in life. The things they would write would ultimately become the small goals that would help them achieve their \\\\\\\larger goal. When you have goals set in your life, the only thing left to do is go get them done! Yes, I know this is the hard part, but when you actually have goals defined in your life, you wake up every morning knowing exactly what you’re working towards. You strive for specific opportunities or instances that someday make you successful. You go after your…

I learned that if I want to go anywhere in life I need to push myself to my limits. I also learned that many successful people have a lot of grit. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and many others have grit as well as strong, powerful athletes like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. Many people who were once unsuccessful and were put down, pulled themselves…

This is a tribute to a man that has always been and will always be my mentor. His name is Alan Dale Jacobson, he is my father. He is not technically my father by blood, but he is by far the best father I could have ever asked for. I have known him my entire life as Uncle Al until I was 13 and he married my mother and our relationship went to a whole new level. He taught me many things like pride, honesty, to put my family above all things, and how to be an honorable man.…

The first thing I’m thankful for is my family. They are always there for me. They help me through the good and bad times. Whenever I’m going through something I just go to them and they help me and they help me find a solution to my problem. Another reason is because they love me no matter what. Even when I do something bad or not smart they…

The first thing I am thankful for is my friends and my family. I know this is a very typical answer but it's true! My family has supported me through everything in my life and has watched me grow as a person. I don't know where I would be without them. My family really is great, we are not perfect and we do argue like every other family, but we always forgive each other for our mistakes. The same goes for my friends, they are very kind and honest. No matter what I am going though ,they can always put…

How has my dad shaped my view of life? It is hard to pinpoint exactly. I know I have learned a lot from him: the best ways to save money on groceries, the value of gift cards in everyday life, how to relax and joke and be the comedic relief (not that I use that lesson very often, unfortunately), how to separate work and home and truly enjoy being at home (another lesson I need to put into practice more often), and so much more.…

The first thing that I’m grateful for is my parents. My parents have given me birth because if there was no them, there wouldn’t be no me. Although we often get in each other’s nerves, I would not change a single thing about my parents. They always have been there for me and have given the best advice. They give me food and shelter. They have also taken care of me throughout my life so I’m glad that I have people that love and care for me.…
