What Is Life?
Read each statement. Write a 100-word summary explaining how that media piece supports that statement and include reference citations.
1. Find a media piece—article, video, presentation, song, or other—related to the scientific method, creating hypotheses, or designing experiments. Include the link or reference citation for the piece and describe how it helped you better understand how the scientific method is used to create hypotheses and experiments.
Knuth, K., Erner, P., & Frasso, S. (2007). Designing Intelligent Instruments. AIP Conference Proceedings, 954(1), 203-211. doi:10.1063/1.2821263. This is a robotic arm that is designed to locate a characterization a white circle on a black background using the LEGO light sensor. It relies on Bayesian inference, which is implemented using a technique called Nested Sampling, which was developed by John Skilling. This software allows the robot to learn the characteristics of the circle using the light sensor data that it has collected. When looking at this, piece of work I think many people would question “what is it and what does it do?” after hearing the explanation and seeing it work it leads to me to understand how and why the scientific method is impotent. Like I said before having to test and have an idea of what you want to achieve is a goal setting idea similar to a hypothesis.
2. Find a media piece—article, video, presentation, song, or other—that recognizes the fundamental concepts of chemistry in biology. Include the link or reference citation for the piece and describe how it helped you better understand how fundamental concepts of chemistry affect biology.
