Giving (verb): to freely transfer the possession of (something) to (someone); hand over to. When one gives to someone or does something special for someone, it is a win-win situation. In fact, the feeling of happiness is always mutual in those cases. No matter how big, small, concrete, or abstract the act of kindness is, it will go a long way nevertheless. The winter season - that is, the season for giving - is approaching, and it is a great time to “kick off” the amiable gestures for family and friends now. For me, personally, I would like to help cook a tasty dessert for my family to marvel over.…

Belonging is a controlling force influenced by our personal situation and is characterized by the understanding of our relationships and interactions with others. An individual’s perception of belonging is greatly influenced by interactions with the environment and their surroundings. This is clearly seen in The Simple Gift by Stephen Herrick which demonstrates elements of belonging and acceptance through the 'pain and suffering' of rejection, 'homelessness' and 'dealing with death' by the characters Billy, Caitlin and Old Bill. Similarly in the movie “Freedom Writers”, it explores the ideas of taking control of one’s identity and accepting life’s simple pleasures.…

The tradition of gift giving did show up in colonial America, with an interesting twist. People gave gifts to their dependents, whether it is to servants, apprentices, or children. People did not return the gift giving to their superiors. And the gift giving was not the elaborate ordeal that it is today. Each recipient would most likely receive one special treasure. And the gifts were more treasured than they are today.…

Most of my friends’ parents would say: “ She is way to young for that. My kid is not getting a phone till she enters high school.” My parents, on the other hand, disregarded what other parents had said and thought it was a great idea and an opportunity for me to earn their trust. It was also an opportunity for me to show responsibility. My Mom and Dad told me a few dozen times, “This is a huge responsibility to have your own cell phone.” Having a phone at such a young age along with more rules that I was not sure I was ready for, such as: keep your phone on loud at all times, make sure you answer our calls the first time we call, be sure to charge your phone every night, and lastly do not lose it. My parents also told me: “If you break any of the rules that we gave you, me or your dad will take your cell phone away for a week.” My worse fear was that I would forget to charge my phone or even worse, miss a call from my parents. Thankfully, I never broke any of the rules that they gave me so I never had my phone taken away. Since I did not break the rules. I was soon rewarded with another new phone. It was the Motorola Razor. It was pink, of course, my favorite color and it was the “it” phone at the time. I loved that phone! Two years went by and soon I was rewarded with a brand new white iPhone for Christmas. With it came a phone case and a note. The note said: “Always keep this case on the phone at all times. If I see it with out a case I will take it from you and you will not get it back for 2 months.” I thought that was an easy rule to follow since the case was so cute I would not want to take it off but, all my friends soon got iPhone 4s and they did not have cases on them and I liked the way their phones looked, so I took my case off. When I got home from school, however, I would immediately put the case back…

As we know “gift giving” is a part of many cultures and we here in America consider it as just that “a gift”. When I am given a gift I am appreciative and I am thankful for receiving it as just that “a gift”. I see gift given as a social practice that many cultures practice to show their gratitude to someone, business, family and even someone in political authority. In the…

    The Gift of the Magi

The author O.Henry portrayed the message of how the giving of gifts requires a lot of hard work, and also incessant searching to find the perfect gift for either your friend, or family. And the gifts will usually require you to sacrifice something special to you, either it be money or a valued possession. A gift doesn’t always have to be physical, maybe if you just cut a little time off work and spent it with your friends, it could be the best gift they might have ever received. A true gift is something that will actually impact a person’s life, it will create a connection between you and the receiver. There is a quote that I really like, and usually fits most scenarios, “The greatest gift is a portion of thyself,” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. This means that best gift you could possibly give will always come from within you. Suppose you’re looking for a gift at a store, and you suddenly come across something that catches your eye. Inside, you will know that this is the gift that you have been looking for. A good gift doesn’t have to cost much at all, and I can say that from personal experience. About half a year ago, when I moved from Houston, I promised my best friend I would find us something that represented our friendship. And While I was on vacation in India, I found just that. Simple enough, it was just a statue of a shark holding a sign that said, “No fishing,” on it. This would only make sense because we had an inside joke based on the saying “There are many other fish in the sea,” and that males would be the sharks. My only problem is that I have to go to Houston to give it to him. But I am sure when he sees the present, his eyes will light up and it will bring back a lot of memories.…
