We hear people tell us about how some significant event or person in their lives came along and changed everything. We also hear of some fantastic revelation someday up on the mountain, or a close encounter with nature, even a brush with some insane disaster, bringing the person onto the doorstep of death. Most people quote extraordinary event that is very unique to them and hear about how that something have come to have a great impact on their lives, changing the very manner in which they view life and perceive it. My story might not be anything spectacular, but for me it has been the one most singularly amazing event of my life.…

In college, she somewhat finds herself and who she really is. She became infatuated with her face and how she could have her face back. Her disability was part of her identity because it was something that she saw everyday in the mirror. It was a part of her and made her who she was and how she managed herself. Her lack of confidence came from her disproportionate face, which she will hide with her hair. Over time when she is more comfortable in her own skin she cuts her hair and no longer has what protects her from the looks of others. “As a child I had expected my liberation to come from getting a new face to put on, but now I saw it came from shedding something, shedding my image.” (Grealy, 222) Through her journey she discovered that society wants you to be what they perceive as…

Behavior Observed: Upon entering the house Abby politely took my jacket and hung it up on a chair. She then ran up the stairs and asked me to come see her dollhouse. She identified every little thing in her dollhouse as she was showing it to me. She showed me the “windows”, “stove”, “soap”, “mantel”, “rockwing chairs”, and the “shower head, where the water comes out so everyone is clean”. She then began to play with two cats, according to her “the mama and the daddy cats”. She made a deep voice for the “daddy cat” and an extremely high pitched voice for the “mama cat“. She made up an elaborate story about the “mama cat” having to go on an adventure to find the “baby cat”. While telling this tale she used words such as “excited” and “surprised” in the right context.…

As I turned in her direction again, I saw her lengthy fingers move elegantly around the plain brown paper, crumpling it and then discarding it in the waste basket. The movement of her hands wound its way all the way up her arms to her shoulders causing her flowing striped shirt to wave its way around her torso, the same way a crinoline petticoat would wind around a French dancer in the 1700s. Its loose qualities only emphasized the tightness of her pants. Fitting like a second skin, her dark blue denim jeans appeared almost black in the light and encompassed her entire legs, contrasting well with her fair toes strapped in deep burgundy gladiator…
