An Ocean Oasis

My backyard is a place I love to go when I need to escape from the stresses of everyday life. It is a gorgeous ocean front getaway. Sitting here now I can see, and smell many beautiful things. Some of which are moving, and others stationary, some that are loud, and others that are quiet. This is my backyard. I am sitting in the sunlight staring at an island out ahead. It's name is Catalina, and it stretches across my entire view. Its color is blue like the dolphins that swim in the pacific, and looks mountainous. Around me, I can see many objects that act as decoration. There are bright red roses that line the wall dividing my house and my neighbors house. Also along that wall is a medium sized lemon tree that is overloaded with glowing yellow lemons. They always have the strongest scent, you can smell them anywhere remotely near the tree. Below the ledge that I am sitting on is a steep hillside that contains many green plants, and has bushes around the borders on the right and left hand sides. There are multiple couches that welcome you into the yard as you walk from the inside of my house to the outside. Most of the time my cat is sunbathing on them. In the corner of my yard is a large square shaped jacuzzi. It always makes a loud bubbling noise and hums throughout the day, giving off a chlorine smell. In the other corner of my yard is a small fire pit. Its shape is circular, and radiates heat like the sun. There are two small benches surrounding it that are close enough so that you can feel the heat with out getting burned. Next to the fire pit, is a family sized table with tall bar stools going around the boarders. There are several heater umbrellas that are made of a shiny metal called stainless steel. Other decorations that I can see around me are the wind chimes, and the fountain. Both of these make a very peaceful noise. The wind chimes cling together and sound like twenty bells all ringing at once, and the fountain sounds like a heavy rain that is falling over your head. Behind me, I can hear my dog barking at the neighbors who are swimming, and splashing around in their pool. When I look up above me, I can see the white sun roof that extends all the way across my yard. It brings shade over almost everything from the couches to the jacuzzi. My backyard is, and always will be the most wonderful place to run away to when I need it. All of the smells, views, and sounds are what makes it such a special place to me. It is the place where I find myself in a state of complete equanimity, and I love it.

I am sitting just before the escalator to go upstairs to the food court and movie theater. I am sitting on a wooden bench with my girlfriend to my left. There are many shops surrounding me such as Champs, Pacsun, Traffic, Lids, Home Elements and Dollar Tree. The area that I will be observing is about 50 feet by 100 feet. There are 4 potted trees around me, one to my direct left, one to my direct right, one northeast and one northwest. There are also two fake plants directly north of me in between the two potted trees. There are two sets of stairs on each side of a long ramp to my left. As I look up, there is a large sunroof approximately 200 feet above me. It is sunny out today with few thunderstorms. It rained about 2 hours ago but has since brightened up and evaporated all of the water which means it is very humid outside. There is constant foot traffic inside the area that I am observing today.…

The wooded area surrounding the park has a mystifying feel with the sun setting and the strange odor of a dank basement coming from its small pond. The air feels sticky and warm this time of the year and the trees blocking the breeze makes it even more muggy than usual. The open and empty field gives me a feeling of isolation and the darkening skies has an ominous look. I can hear the shrieking muffled sounds of animals nearby, but without being able to see what’s beyond the blurry tree line, it’s hard to know if what I’m hearing is wild and aggressive or tame and timid. I can taste the musty fall air on my tongue as the breeze…

The story opens with the account of a woodcutter who has found a man's body in the woods. The woodcutter reports that man died of a single sword stroke to the chest, and that the trampled leaves around the body showed there had been a violent struggle, but otherwise lacked any significant evidence as to what actually happened. There were no weapons nearby, and no horses—only a single piece of rope, a comb and a lot of blood.…

It is approximately six in the afternoon on this bright shiny day in September. Today is a day like no other, for today we will experience the beauty and grace of the beach at night. For quite some time I've been meaning to experience this illusive phenomenon at night. With all the rumors about the beach being a gloomy and mysterious place under the moon lit sky, I just had to see for myself. The thought of reaching the beach was so tantalizing, that anxiety overwhelmed me. I packed the basic beach utensils; beach towels, sun block, playing cards, a guitar and firewood, therefore was set. The only ingredients missing now for my trip to the beach were my friends, and soon quickly found the solution by picking them up. Along the way, the bumpers of cars were visible for miles, as traffic filled the lanes of the 91 and 55 freeways.…

Walking around the beach made me feel more comfortable than ever. As I stroll along, I could feel the soft smooth sand beneath my feet. The sand looked clean like sugar spread out for miles, as it squished between our toes and made my calves ache with every step. The sound of the ocean comforted me, the rhythmic pounding of the waves represses all my worries. I kicked the water and it responded with a swoosh of its waves. That brought back memories, when I used to come here with my friends and used to play around in the water. I couldn’t help but faint a smile. I found it some what amusing to see the sand castles that still remained, the ones we built long ago, the lucky few that made it through reckless little boys play. It was dark outside and stars floated in the distance, but the moon seemed so close, I could grab it and take it in my pocket to keep for myself, so close that I could see it's bright shadow shimmering on the rolling water. Ghost crabs darted past my feet like thieves in the night, going in one hole and out another. One of them climbed to my feet, its legs harmlessly piercing through my skin. I shook it off and it quickly escaped to the nearest hole it could find.…

Due to the land not being refreshed regularly from instability (volcanic action) the land is generally very old with poor nutrients. Soils have also been subjected to wind and water erosion, washing away topsoil nutrients. The state of soils influence flora and fauna and due to this, they have been able to develop without nutrients and have become extremely energy efficient. Biodiversity can be very high due to one species not being able to dominate a particular environment.…

You feel the cool air warm up around yourself. There is a pleasantness that can only be found in these warm winter days. Birds squawk overhead. In a pack they fly in v’s. You wanted to fly, but the dream fled after you jumped off the deck. Birds gain height, you gained a broken arm. The birds slow and descend onto the small patch of grass to your left. Wildlife is all around you, but the adults don’t seem to notice. Not far ahead, a squirrel shoves acorns into his mouth, climbing up a tree he deposits his cache into a hole. He runs down the tree to start the process again. Nature is a cycle, a loop that won’t…

The bright blue background and High Mountain tops over 10 feet taller than me standing at 5’8’’. The slightly chilly breeze that lightly brushes my skin leaving small goose bumps throughout the surface of my whole body. The sound of the waterfall and view of the lake so translucent I can see the yellow fish all the way to the bottom. The trees singing in the background mimicking the echo of the water. The dirt soft and warm in-between my fingers from the pulsating raises of the sun. The rays drift in and out from the cover of the small puffy white and gray clouds. There is an overview of the city and tiny bugs in my peripheral vision that fly above me, there I sit on the mountain side with only the company of myself. I mentally evaluate my…

    In the Kitchen

The article “In the kitchen” written by the renowned author Henry Louis Gates is his own memoir of African-American hairstyle and it goes beyond the subject to bring forward the discussion of assimilation. Gates recalls his childhood memory of the kitchen in family’s Piedmont house. Even though the writer introduces the old-fashioned kitchen equipped with gas stove as the reminder of big mom’s cooking, the kitchen turns out to serve as the place where mom usually does her hair. This article also includes Henry’s own experience of straightening his hair whereby he questions the practicability and indispensability of the assimilation through hairstyle. Even though the article appears to celebrate the marvel of hair straightening process, somehow it renders author’s ambivalent stance about the issue.…

Sitting on the front porch on a beautiful sunny, breezy day. The suns kiss makes skin warm to the touch. When the breeze starts blowing it cools you down making you get goose bumps for a moment. The porch is old and brown. Nobody knows of when the last time it was painted. Nails coming out of the wood, that’s why there are chairs to sit in. There are steps that lead right up to the glass door. Sometimes you might see a curious dog or cat peeking his head out the door trying to get a glimpse of sun. The revelry of neighbors cackling and loud barking of the dogs in the neighborhood is obnoxious. If you listen closely in the trees above are birds chirping away and squirrels running amuck from branch to branch. Occasionally the sound of little…

As we approach the beach, the first thing I notice is the sky. As I look into the cloudless, cerulean blue sky and see the flawlessness of life; in the distance, rolling clear-blue waves crash into each other with such force as that of football players. The sky is breathtaking along with the sounds of the waves and the tide washing onto the shore. The water reminds me of crystals shimmering in the water with the sun reflecting off of it. As the sun sets, the sky turns into a pink hue with a bright orange sun going down into the horizon.…

    My Messy Room

I am currently sitting in my bedroom, on a cold winter day. My feet touching the rough surface of my ancient Persian carpet, walls of orangey orange stare at me through the pictures on them, and the mountains of dirty clothes falling over me as if there was an avalanche going on. Today is not going well as I feel stressed from all the chores that I have, plus the cleaning of my over infected room. Even though every visitor that gets to see my room may suffer blindness from seeing the mess, I love this room because it has a certain warmth and glow that allows my mind to rest in peaceful bliss. Yes, maybe there is a smell of wet dog and there are pets that I never brought home crawling around every corner of this room but it is the place where I grew up and feel safe to be when I am down. There are so many great treasures hidden in this room that as soon as I clean, I feel water drops fall from my dark brown eyes and run across my cheeks until they fall from my chin and hit the floor. Out of a 24 hour day I may only take 7 hours to get this place spotless and be able to observe the wonders hidden inside of the black door that covers the entrance.…

    Heaven on Earth

As I walk down the narrow, brown, rickety bridge that leads to the ocean my heart begins to race in anticipation of reaching the fascinating sight. I’m suddenly surrounded by sand that is white and pure as snow. I walk at a turtle’s speed absorbing this overwhelming beauty that encircles me. The sky is the brightest blue I’ve ever seen, so bright that it almost seems as if it is from an animated movie and not real life itself. Fluffy clumps of clouds that were covering the sky before slowly fade away into thin air and the crystal clear waves sparkle like diamonds. The water is never-ending. I see heaps of seagulls flying around the sky, white and grey and full of spirit. As a gust of wind runs through my long, dark, brown hair I look to the right to see two elegant dolphins leap from the deep blue sea and dive back in as if saying hello to the gorgeous, heavenly day.…
