Typically when someone refers to a community resource, they are referring to an organization that provides help to help a community and or individual grow in a positive way and improve quality of life. Community resources can be run or funded by the government, business, non-profit groups or even individuals and they can serve the community in a variety of ways. Most communities have organizations that offer some form of assistance to individuals and families. Hospitals, community clinics, and public health organizations are all considered community resources, whether they are funded by non-profit groups or Federal government. Mental Health America (MMA) (formerly known as National Mental Health Association), is the country’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to helping all people live mentally healthier lives (Mental Health America, p.1). MMA has over 320 affiliates across the nation, and they represent a growing movement of Americans who promote mental wellness for the health and well-being of the nation; every day and in times of crisis. MMA was established in 1909 by a former psychiatric patient Clifford W. Beers (Mental Health America, p.2). During Beer’s stay in public and private institutions, he witnessed and was subjected to horrible abuse. According to the article, “Mental Health America”, MHA will advance its mission by – educating the public about ways to preserve and strengthen its mental health; fighting for access to effective care and an end to discrimination against mental health and addictive disorders; fostering innovation in research, practice, services, and policy, and providing support to the 60 plus million individuals and families living with mental health and substance abuse problems ( Mental Health America, p. 2). The name Mental Health America was chosen to communicate how fundamental mental health is to the overall health and well-being of every American (Mental Health America). The bell image in the logo serves as a vital reminder of their past and the progress they have made and is a powerful symbol of their vital mission. The reason I have chosen this organization is because mental health and substance abuse is of interest to me. I have a strong desire to help individuals suffering from substance abuse. I have an interest in learning more about human behavior and why people choose to do certain things. I am fascinated by the human mind, and human beings are amazing creatures. Throughout the years I have gone through and changed my major, today god has revealed to me that social work in mental health/substance abuse field would be a good fit. I enjoy listening to people’s problems and trying to help them find a solution. My daughter’s father struggles with addiction so addiction and mental health is rather intriguing to me and I really want to learn more about it. My future career goal is to obtain a bachelor’s degree in social work and work in a drug and alcohol treatment facility. I plan on transferring to Pitt and enrolling into their social work program but currently I am taking up classes for social work technician all of which will count towards my bachelors in social work. I would love to work toward improving my clients psychological, physical and social functioning and am looking forward to improving people’s lives who suffer from addiction. Social workers help people function as best as they can in their environments despite of barriers that include physical and mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction and poverty.
