Catherine Opie’s Joanne, Betsy, & Olivia best represents “quoting” documentation. Catherine specializes in documentary photography and explores aspects such as domestic everyday activities. Her methods of documenting certain moments in real life situations directly reflect quoting. In this photograph, it is almost like the audience is catching a glimpse of this families day to day lives. The house is messy with the toddlers toys everywhere and it looks as if they just finished a meal. These people are not posing or being staged, they are simply doing what they would normally be doing. Catherine also is very involved in the Lesbian and Gay communities so much of her work involves identity, challenging gender roles and social and political themes.…
Ta-Nehisi Coates poses an inquisition about how Whites haven't made the past right. Coates states simply that Whites never truely made it up to the Blacks for slavery. The Whites had just said, "we meant well" and moved on. Coates brings this up by comparing the Whites "good intentions" to a sleeping pill. The idea of "good intention" is seen throughout history, not just American but worldwide. But how could one apologize for the past and make it right with those wronged? It's near impossible question to answer. Because how does one apologize for something that is like slavery?…

The story My Antonia is by Willa Cather, who was born in Virginia in 1873. I did enjoy the language, which the story was in first person. The chapter that we did receive from the story was very interesting I wanted to keep reading.…
This dialogue from Chapter XIX occurs as Jim and Antonia sit on the roof of the chicken house, watching the electrical storm. The two have grown apart somewhat following Mr. Shimerda’s suicide, as Jim has begun to attend school and Antonia has been forced to spend…

I believe that Kathleen Norris is correct when she says that "in many ways the world of My Ántonia is still with us, a neglected but significant part of America,” because we still have people coming into our country hoping to fulfill the American dream and having the country fall short of their expectations.…
At the time of this aphorism’s composition, Morrie was more optimistic than ever, despite his affliction with ALS slowly crippling him. Morrie used his condition of being close to death to formulate small philosophies of life, this aphorism was one of them. I selected this aphorism because it illustrates how although most people emit an aura of normalcy around them, they struggle with their personal internal conflicts, battling with themselves wondering why they made this or that choice or all the opportunities they missed. The hourglass demonstrates acceptance and consideration of the past, with its falling sands…
In Albert Camus’ “The Stranger” the “story of an ordinary man who gets drawn into a senseless murder” is told. Taking place in Algeria this man, Meursault, is constantly in a climate of extreme warmth, as are all the inhabitants therein. The sun, the source of light and the cause of this warmth, is thus a vital and normal part of his life. It brings warmth and comfort yet it can also cause pain and sickness. Throughout most of his life Meursault has lived with the conflicting forces of the sun and light, as a friend and foe. However in Chapter 6 these forces become unbalanced and the sun becomes an aggressor causing Meurault physical pain and jolting him into violent action.…

Romeo and Juliet is an extremely well-known play written by William Shakespeare in the late 1590s. It is a story about an ancient rivalry between two wealthy families which is defied by two teenage star-crossed lovers who tragically die. The play was set in the Elizabethan era in Verona Italy. Despite that the play was written four hundred years ago it continues to capture the imaginations of teenagers in the 21st century, and the themes within the play are still seen in modern culture. These themes include infatuation, emotional extremity and rebellion.…
Eliza Wharton is a very bright and independent woman who cares deeply for a man named Mr. Haly. She expresses her independence in her first letter as she says “[I] feel a gleam of joy at leaving her?”(818). Miss Wharton is a very outgoing and flamboyant woman who seems to write based on her feelings in those moments. Much how someone would write in their diaries to express the emotions that they cannot show others. Miss Wharton feels those urges and so she writes “I must write to you the impulses of my mind; or I must not write at all” (820). Based on this we can see that she may have been a little rebellious while going through her life.…
Shakespeare creates a facade when he coats Lady Macbeth with feelings of love and compassion for her husband Macbeth. However, when Lady Macbeth finds out the witches prophesied Macbeth was to become king she immediately thought of ways she could achieve her ambition, committing the sinful act of killing King Duncan was the first to come to mind. Lady Macbeth challenges Macbeths manly hood by stating “It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness” The noun “milk”, a word of purity and motherly love is used to describe how she thinks Macbeth is too soft hearted and cowardly to kill King Duncan, she bullies Macbeth into going along with the plan. Lady Macbeth knew that Macbeth was a warrior and has killed before so she tries to unleash that inner…
I was startled by how by Iago’s manipulative nature revealed itself in the first few lines of the play. Shakespeare uses this somewhat backwards introduction to illustrate Iago’s character and the significant role he will play in the attempt to ruin Othello’s seemingly perfect life. It was shocking to discover Iago’s duplicitous intentions and livid attitude so early in the play, but it gave us perspective on the one-sided conflict between him and Othello. As the play continues, his deceptive nature reveals itself, for example, when he pretends to be the good guy relaying the information that Brabantio’s perfect daughter is having dirty intercourse…
