My Analytical Strengths
For the second semester, the College English 1B online class consisted of reading response journals, discussion boards, analytical essays, and group presentations. Ms. Davis assured us that this class included numerous reads and was expecting analytical essays written with brevity and clarity. As this course progressed, I discovered insights about myself as a reader and my analytical strengths and weaknesses. During this discovery, old and new habits arose in the reading process. Ultimately, the goal of this course was to improve my reading and analytical skills.
During the online learning process, I discovered a few new things about myself as a reader. Taking into consideration that I am quite fond of reading, the various pieces that were assigned were not as stressful as they were described to be. However, I found a handful of the pieces difficult to grasp and required close reading, and frequently, revising over multiple times. This mostly occurred during what I consider one of the most difficult sections of the course, analyzing poetry. The various poetic forms required different approaches when analyzing them. I believe one of my analytical strengths is recognizing and acknowledging background context and cultural influences. Another strength I obtain is the ability to detect the author's tone and connecting it to the theme. Unfortunately, my weaknesses shine through during analytical reading. At times, I disregard literal meanings and jump to complex assumptions. During the writing process, although I have improved greatly in comparison to the beginning of the year, my analysis can become confusing or disorganized.     I now feel, after being a student of this class, being successful in business or school requires the ability to organize, arrange, and compose thoughts into a logical format. Without these skills it is impossible to communicate thoughts and emotions grammatically.     It’s a fair bit to remember. One of the most effective ways to improve our own writing skill is to spend some time reading the works of others. Reading actually enables us to expand and broaden our knowledge. The more knowledge we have, the betterequipped we are to tackle any challenge we'll face. The more we read, the more words we gain exposure to and surely they'll walk their way into our vocabulary. Reading my classmates' essays is one vital way to learn, gain or acquire my writing proficiency. It emphasizes an assortment of experiences, their backgrounds, history and nuances as well as the various sub-plots that weave their way through every story. I had learned new techniques in writing that were not quite familiar to me. I had developed a better reading process, to better understand what was written and what was being told. By this activity, it had helped me magnify what were stored in my vocabulary. This Summer Vacation Essay Activity taught me to become a better reader and coached me on how to get better readers. This task goes hand-in-hand with the expansion of my terminologies and word-stock. Exposure to these essays has noted an effect on my own writing style, as observing the cadence, fluidity and writing preferences of my other classmates.
