My Aha Moment In Leadership
The most significant lesson that had an impact on me this week was the second half of the Emergent Leadership Issues lesson. Breaking into groups to go over different emergent leadership issues from subordinate/supervisor perspectives was an eye-opening experience. This lesson is also where I had my “aha” moment. I was up first to play the supervisor role for stress management and was flipping through pages of the student guide to find instructions or steps that would help me communicate with my subordinate. My “aha” moment was when I realized that there are no exact guidelines on how to talk to a subordinate about difficult topics and that I must rely on open communication and my knowledge of resources to effectively be there for my airman. This has changed my problem solving skills because now I have to rely on my subordinate to provide me with enough information to make the proper choice. I must create that trusting relationship if I want them to open up enough to provide that information instead of relying solely on my own knowledge. I realized that there will not always be an official form like the ACA to deal with unexpected situations when it comes to being a supervisor. With this new knowledge, I plan on changing my behavior by becoming more confident in my answers to my subordinates instead of being insecure and relying so heavily …show more content…
My previous shop was really small and the financial/personnel aspects of resource stewardship were managed by my civilian program manager and offsite civilians. The most frustrating part of last week was drill practice. That is an area that I have struggled in since basic training, and it has only gotten worse. From the individual research I have been conducting for my second briefing, I have become aware of some suicide prevention initiatives that I did not know the Air Force had

I personally learned a lot from this chapter. I am always willing to help others in any way that I can. I always volunteer when there is an opening. So far I have volunteer in various locations such as Valley Rescue Mission, Feeding the Homeless, Clothing Bank, Teen Challenge, and etc. Growing up I have always learned that it is better to give than to receive. Because when you give to someone out of the goodness of your heart, you never know how much you’re giving meant to them. I am always cleaning out my closet ready to give to Goodwill and the Clothing Bank. I have always been taught that when you want to give something away, put yourself at the other…

I have a better understanding of all the topics we went over during the 8 weeks. The fun part I had with each section is placing people with the different ways. For example, when we learned about leading, rewarding, communications, etc. it was fun to match up the different managers/leaders within my organization to the different styles there were to doing things. It helped a lot to put definitions into application.…

The assignment that I learned the most from was the Week Two assignment about the digestive system. I now understand how the body uses the different types of food, the path food takes as it enters the body, and how the organs, including the salivary glands work together in the digestive process. However, my favorite part of Week Two came through the class discussions in the area of home remedies. I learned how a change in diet can prevent or help to cure digestive disorders. For example, Diverticulus can be treated at home by drinking plenty of fluid and eating fiber rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. I enjoyed this part the most because I was forced to take medicine for an extended period of time and I really did not enjoy that experience. Therefore, learning natural ways to bring relief was truly refreshing for me.…

I found both of these learning experiences very enlightening and beneficial to my overall managerial acumen. Northhouse (2013), explained on the sixteen types and styles of leadership, which had a major impact on my overall viewpoints regarding humans and management in our administrative worlds today. I was able to identify and relate the diverse leadership styles and types in a positive way and glean insightful understanding of different people and their leadership potential. The discussion board gave me free range to strengthen my self-expressive abilities and interact with my peers. The leadership instrument paper allowed for self-analysis with specific references to key leadership ideals and concepts. I feel both assignments gave me insight into my leadership strengths, weaknesses, foci, and desires which will in turn assist me in becoming a successful consistent leader.…

Another lesson that stood out to me was planning for a quality retirement. Before this course, retirement was something that had never once, crossed my mind. *Ask Yourself Tough Questions- I chose this lesson because it asks in the writing, if day-to-day urgencies always have to shove higher-order concerns to the side. This question made me think a lot. I concentrated on the meaning behind the question and came up with somewhat of an answer for myself. I was also able to highly concentrate on other tough questions that I needed answered for my part. This lesson directs you to discover self-knowledge, which is very essential.…
