My Ability To Learn Spanish
I have also wanted to learn Spanish for a very long time. But seeing this video also makes me wonder if it is possible at my age. My boyfriend’s grandfather is 81 and he speaks fluent Spanish, they have tried teaching him English for the 16 years that he has lived in America but as much as he has retained he still cannot speak fluent English. He only knows the basics such as how are you, hi, hello, etc. It is probably because of how old he is and because he is at the high end of the spectrum where the ability to learn another language is nearly diminished. Then again I feel like if you are at the age where your ability to learn a language is decreasing but you already speak multiple languages then you may not be classified into this group?

This seminar was about the Rehabilitating the "Wild Tongue" Philosophy at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The speaker, Francisco Guajardo, divided his presentation into four major parts. Francisco starts off by giving a background information of his life. In the first few minutes of the presentation, I learned Francisco belonged to an immigrant family. His family migrated to the United States, in search for a better life. Francisco grew up in the city of Elsa, Texas beside his two brothers. Francisco first language was Spanish, but he later was introduced to the English language. While Francisco attended his first year of elementary school, his classroom became a test trial for bilingual instruction. Francisco states that rushing a Spanish speaking child into an English classroom will affect their language development.…

I would like to say I know Spanish, after four years of studying in high school and multiple trips to South and Central America, yet it seems every time I leave the States, I find myself in a frantic struggle to process the words I know and figure out the meanings of the ones I do not. Sometimes this simply means missing out on a few insignificant details, other times it can seriously complicate life.…

Chomsky expresses how a child could not learn a language through repetition alone as it is not spoken around them. Every language is unique and complex; all with specific distinctions which even the speakers are unaware of. He says that all children become fluent in their native language by the age of five or six, regardless of their abilities.…

I am Puerto Rican, or, as my family constantly reminds me, "boriqua". As a result, I grew up learning two languages; English and Spanish. However, ever since I have attended school I have lost much of my Spanish. Unlike the other kids who cried and clung to their moms, I was very enthusiastic about starting school. I think the enthusiasm came from my parent's encouragement to learn, as well as their assurance that they'd be there at the end of the day to pick me up and take me back home.…

Where I grew up in the United States Spanish was a language that was rarely spoken, except for some elementary school classes where we learned colors and months, while at home it was what I used to speak to my family. My perspective of the language was influenced by my family as they spoke Spanish, so I found my self pursuing more knowledge about it. On the other hand my friends did not use Spanish to communicate to those close to them and thus had no need to pursue its knowledge. A persons perspective is made up of their future and environment, even slight differences in these can cause a change of perspective and thus knowledge. A knowers perspective…
