Musée des Beaux Arts
“Musée des Beaux Arts” by W.H. Auden

We have been studying a poem called “Musée des Beaux Arts” for the past 3 weeks, it is a poem about Icarus falling from the sky. These next six questions give us an insight into the meaning of the poem.
In this poem by W. H. Auden there are six subjects being talked about, the suffering, The Old Masters, human position, miraculous birth, the Martyrdom and the disaster, these all refer to something that is happening in the “Fall of Icarus” painting by Breughel. The suffering is relating to an experience, something bad weather that be physical or mental, I believe it is both, because Icarus is falling from the sky, and he must have hit the water at great speed, so he is suffering from physical pain where as his father Daedalus must be suffering a sense of mental pain from knowing that his son is about to die. The Old Masters are referring to old painters and the human position is where you are in relation to everyone else in the world, why nobody stopped to help Icarus, they must’ve felt like they had no need to stop for him as they had other things to do, he is only one person with whom they had probably never met before, why did they have any need to help Icarus. The miraculous birth is believed to be that when you die you will go somewhere you deserve to go, might that be heaven or other beliefs, this is referring to Icarus being born into his new life after death. The Martyrdom is one who chooses to suffer from death rather than re-announce or accept a belief or cause. Icarus falling from the sky is the disaster.
To be able to fully understand the poem “Musée des Beaux Arts” it is a necessity to understand and be aware of the allusions that occur all the way throughout the poem. The allusions refer to things that we need to understand and fully connect to a new text. The two allusions that are referred to in the poem are ‘Icarus and Daedalus’ they are thought to be gods having their own myth which explains how Icarus fell out the sky, there is a song about the myth of ‘Icarus and Daedalus’ and also lots of stories for young children and adults to learn about the two gods.
The human position is where you are in relation to the rest of the world, how Icarus is so insignificant to the people around him, they see him falling but do nothing about it. How the man on the boat could’ve gone over to see if Icarus was okay instead of letting him drown, but was it worth saving one insignificant person or continue on as if nothing happened.
Two figures of speech used in the poem are, pronouns and personification, personification is used in lines 19-21 “... and the expensive delicate ship that must have see something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.” The ship is being personified, ships cannot see because they don’t have eyes, but the ship can see that the boy is falling out of the sky, and ships don’t have anywhere to go, the people on ships do though, so they are also personifying the ship to want and need to go somewhere. Pronouns have been used throughout the poem using they, its, it, their and him.
In lines 19, 20 and 21, “...something amazing...’ was referring to Icarus falling out of the sky, how it was thought to be impossible. This situation is disastrous for Icarus because he is so insignificant and nobody really notices him even though he did fall out of the sky.
The poem refers to the children in line 7, and it explains that the children did want the miraculous birth to happen “’...for the miraculous birth, there always must be children who did not specially want it to happen...” because the miraculous birth means you die but are born in a new life.

While the theories on the artist intent are of plenty, there is no mistaking that this piece provokes deeper contemplation on the depiction of beauty and the power of “ugly” imagery in this painting. One can argue that over vast time periods and amongst culture the defined interpretation of beauty has seen many profound depictions and interpretations displayed in infinite works of “beautiful” art. We must ask ourselves, can only works of “beauty” be aesthetically pleasing to the eye or can we find it in a variety of work through…

The” Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” best represents the themes of Ovids’ story “The Story of Daedalus and Icarus” and Brueghel’s painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. Some similarities between the three works is the depiction of Icarus flying, the melted wings, Icarus drowning and the ignorance of the towns people.”Musee de Beaux Arts” does not include the incident where the wings melted. “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” is more representative of the stories and painting themes because they all demonstrate what the consequences may be when one does not listen to direction.…

The poems persona is simply an un-named 'observer' who tells the story, in a third person present tense narrative form ("they") which assists in portraying the notion that a weeping hero actually did walk the earth and that its just not an event created in the mind, of the peoples and society's reactions to this weeping man and the affects he has had on the people. The subject matter of this poem is the nature of this weeping man.…

The poem moves away from the images of inferiority and onto descriptions of works that are vain and hollow in their message, with no body or substance beyond that of physical appearance. ‘Insipid Guidos oversweet, and Dolce's rose sensationalities,' these are shallow works, of which there are many, ‘in a great Roman palace crammed with art,' this is further emphasized in the next few lines, ‘Curly chirping angels spruce as birds', spruce being the indicator that all the representations within each piece are similar in their presentation and appearance.…

“Icarus” includes a number of literary devices, such as alliteration. In line 1, Field writes “feathers floating” and in line 3, “police preferred.” In the third stanza, there is “curtains carefully” (line 22) and “hates himself” (line 25). Field also describes the setting, the human world, as dull and mundane for example in line 11 Icarus is wearing a “gray, respectable suit.” The tone in the poem is gloomy and dejected as represented in line 13 with “sad, defeated eyes.”…

After a few first times reading “I, Icarus”, readers might superficially interpret the meaning to be about a flying dream, yet if we dig deeper, we will be able to comprehend the yearning to reach a superior dimension of Nowland. As a matter of fact, Alden Nowland was born in a small village in Nova Scotia; the constrictions had influenced him to foster the dream of breaking free to seek his own prospects. Nowland reflects back to his childhood and imagines he was flying beyond all the restrictions that had been confining him. Even though fictional elements play the main role in the whole poem, Nowland’s detailed description and firm assertion “There was a time when I could fly. I swear it. “(1), “I rose…

The poem’s form is written according to the way Aristotle proposes how tragedies should be written, with a “beginning, middle, and an end”. Additionally, the inevitable theme within the poem “Artisitole” can be that since there is an end within tragedy, we are all living one continuous tragedy. I mean, we are all born to die. Time will not rest for us, and we will eventually experience death, as depressing as…

Imagery within the poem shows the inside of a child’s imagination. A little girl is playing with her toy bus in a sandbox. She “knows the exact spot” it rides, who will “swim” and “who will be pulled under” (23). She controls the outcomes where there are no surprises. Her lack of enlightenment from the world protects her, as well as all other children, from tragedies that their simple minds cannot understand. The child is the hero if there is no one else to save the day, but if they’re equipped with the awareness that bad aftermath is possible then their entire outlook will change. It is…

As an art student, I find the art that we learn about in class very interesting because it is art that I would never be interested in, but yet after learning the details I enjoy them. Although I don’t mind learning art through power points, I find physically looking at art more enjoyable. Getting the whole experience of physical artwork is a more exciting way to learn and catches my interest more, which is why I was so excited to visit a new museum and look at some art. For this assignment I decided to go to the LACMA museum. I have been to many museums before, but I have not visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art yet so I was very excited. I find a lot of art very fascinating, but I am more interested in the more contemporary and modern arts. I am a design major so I was drawn to the sculptural art pieces that were displayed outside the building. One piece in particular that I found very beautiful and fascinating was an outside display entitled “Urban Light”.…

The poem consists of a mixture of Christian and epic elements and has a very unique style. It represents the crucifixion as a battle and Christ as an epic hero, similar to Beowulf, which is quite different from the texts in the Bible. This contrast can be observed in the description of Jesus’ action during the crucifixion, and in the description of Jesus’ burial and the relationship between Jesus and his thanes.…

Many times we don’t realize some things that may be going on in world, or maybe just around our city, or maybe in our school, or maybe even in our own home. Yet there are other times when we can see things that others can’t when we notice something that others don’t, when we know there is something we can do to help but others can’t. Similarly there was the time where I saw a certain Icarus drowning in the sea as others just walked by, such as in the events of the poem “Musee des Beaux Arts”, by W. H. Auden.…
