Describe the instrument. What does it look like? What does it sound like? The Bladder Pipe literally looks like a stick with a plastic bag on the top! But it has the base (the neck/body) of a very long recorder and then the top looks like a plastic bag which also helps so your lips don’t touch the reed very much.…

The alphorn is very similar to the Australian didjeridoo. They both share a similar shape and design. Although the sound is a notable difference. The didgeridoo has a harsh, hard deep sound. The alphorn on the other hand, has a more calming, higher instrument. Personally I believe the alphorn has a great resemblance to the trumpet. Most of the higher notes and the lower notes sound incredibly similar to the trumpet. The alphorn was originated in Switzerland and was used in a way to guide and lure cows and other farm animals into their pens. The blowing is considered an art in the evening as an evening prayer. The main use was for farmers and their communication towards the animals. After the year 1800, the production of cheese was higher meaning…

Didgeridoos are ancient instruments that are quite simply and naturally constructed. The physicist could explain their design as nothing more complex than a hollow tube or pipe. Technically the instrument is made from eucalyptus branches that have been buried beneath the ground and hollowed out by termites. The branches are then de-earthed, cleaned out, striped of bark (if desired), filled with a wax substance and plugged with a special wax mouthpiece that makes it easier to play as well as more comfortable for the musician. The didgeridoo can then be painted and carved as desired for decoration purposes or for cultural significance. The length of the didgeridoo varies but is most commonly 1-1.5 meters long. On average the the wall thickness is 5 to 10 mm, the blowing end is approximately 30mm in internal diameter, and the far end is approximately 50 mm in diameter. Because of the various techniques and methods used in creating a didgeridoo the final result as an instrument is quite unique. The timbre as well as the…

In those plains, the Mongolians live in traditional ger homes, or portable tents, which is perfect for a nomadic lifestyle (YouTube video - In Mongolia, A Changing Nomadic Way Of Life). The long song “urtyn duu” with free and nonpulsatile melodic elaborations or melismas reflects the vastness of the flat grasslands in Mongolia. Those songs are played with portable music instruments like the morin huur or the horse head fiddle, the limba or the transverse flute, and the kuuchir, the spike fiddle, during the "nair" celebrations (Alves, 237). The long songs are often sung about myths, heroes, and praises of the nature and the…
