Music Appreciation
Casual Listening
The piece of music that really attracts my attention these days is the song named We Own It. I first heard this piece of music when I was sitting in the cinema and watching Fast and Furious 6 on Monday night. It is one of the official soundtracks of the film, owned by Wiz Khalifa. What really captured my attention, at the very beginning, was its rhythm. I felt really excited and I was kind of obsessed with it. Therefore, I did some research about this piece of soundtrack after I finished the movie. I found it on YouTube and literally played it for a whole afternoon. This song is awesome.
The song is written by Wiz Khalifa and sung by Wiz Khalifa and 2 Chainz. It has become a big hit when the movie was released. I think its passionate and strong rhythm makes it perfect for Fast and Furious 6.
As I mentioned, its rhythm captured my attention at the very beginning. It was passionate in fast pace, which could make people feel so excited. After I played it for over three times, I started paying attention to its lyrics. Honestly, I was motivated. I noticed some details in its lyrics. For instance, the most impressive one, in my opinion, is “I never feared death or dying, I only fear never trying.” I shall count it as a personal favor. Literally, I had also felt the passion. It made me feel like I find the friend who truly knows me. Of course, it deeply affected my mood. It reminds me my code-never stop chasing.
Personally, I think I will categorize the music as rap or hip-pop. It has an up tempo and rhythmic beat, which makes the reason for its popularity. Also, Wiz Khalifa and 2 Chainz speak lyrically.
Referential Listening
The piece I chose to evaluate for Referential Listening is Etude in C Minor, written by Frédéric Chopin. This is one of Chopin’s popular etudes, bringing the first collection of etudes to a stirring conclusion. The term “etude” has long been used to describe pieces of difficult technical, focusing on practicing a specific

The first piece by Prokofiev was very intense. The opening was very fast pace. It also contained minor notes that almost seemed like the instruments were out of tune. It was a very disjunct piece in the fact that it went between minor and major notes and loud and soft tempos. The melody was very dark but seemed to have a lighter side once the timbre of the piece began to calm. The piece had a singular melody that it returned to but would also break from the melody in almost an urgent and terrifying manor. This piece was not particularly one I enjoyed.…

"From the school yards of the South Bronx to the tops of the Billboard charts, rap has emerged as one of the most influential musical and cultural forces of our time" (Yale University Press). Rappers and hip hop culture are often criticized for advocating violence, misogyny, and crime. However, rap is actually a form of self-expression for African Americans that is available and accessible to just about everyone. The music and culture that stem from hip hop, "emerged from a uniquely African American disposition, and like the blues, jazz, and soul before it, give voice to those who tend to occupy the lowest rungs of the American social ladder" (NPR). It is one of the most influential and ubiquitous art forms of the past few decades because of…

Although it may seem odd to some, to this day one of the most emotionally stirring yet calming pieces I have ever heard is the acoustic guitar solo during the song “Is There Anybody Out There” by Pink Floyd. If you have never heard it, or even if you do not care for Floyd, I would still suggest you take an opportunity to hear it. The melody is very strong yet simple. All of the elements of melody, harmony, and texture are present which is to say perhaps the reason I enjoy such a simple piece so much is because it is so simple and yet complicated at the same time, much like me. The key it is played in is most likely not nearly as important, although if it were played in another key, I am sure I would quickly notice. The section I am referring starts at 1:24 into the song (The Wall CD) and continues to 2:40, the strength of the melody almost forces all of the accompaniment to the background so much so it is not really heard as much as it is felt.…

The first piece I have picked out was “Oh, Had I Jubal’s Lyre” performed by Women’s Glee Club. I have heard a loud and sharp sounding piece. It started off with the soprano singing with a high pitch voice; then the alto with strong, gradually loud voice. The instruments were presented in this piece was piano and treble voices. The tempo throughout this piece are moderato and allegro. In other words, the tempo was repeating from moderate to fast. The song made me feels a little chilling, but also exciting because the dynamics were crescendo to forte, pianissimo combined with the fortepiano make it sound really sharp in an exciting way. I enjoyed this piece because it makes me feel happy as I listened along.…

Every opening sequence in any fictional work is responsible for setting the general mood of the narrative. Our current pattern of videoclips--the type we like the most these days--tends to offer plots as a way of captivating more of the audience. A few weeks ago I attended a recital/concert in the UMHB auditorium performed by the Waco orchestra (I think that’s who it was). At first when I got there, I wasn’t paying attention because I was bored and knew I was only there to get my fine arts experience credit. After about two songs, I remembered that I was in Music Appreciation and some of the songs they were playing, I heard in class before. I began to tune into to certain instruments and listen to their unique sound and what significant part they played in the song. I also began to realize that I was catching on to some of the patterns in the melody, for example ABBABBA. If I had never been in the music appreciation class I wouldn’t have done any of those things, but it’s just ironic that when you take a class like this, you find yourself paying attention to certain things in music that you never would have found yourself doing prior to the fact. One thing that really interested me was that in one song, a woman who was playing the trumpet had her own solo part. For one, I honestly didn’t expect her to be playing a trumpet, as bad as that sounds. Secondly, I didn’t expect her to be as good as she was. I was in shock at some of the notes she was hitting, and I admit that I was pretty impressed. I played the trombone in middle school so of course I had to watch the trombone players while reminiscing that I used to be the one up there doing that, I was pretty good. After not playing for so long, I forgot the notes and the certain places you slide the horn to make a certain note. Sometimes I wish that I could still play because I believe that being able to play an instrument is a beautiful talent. I would definitely go to another musical now because it’s fun when you’re there to listen and admire, instead of just being there because you have to. When you’re actually involved with the concert, it makes being there a lot more fun and makes you appreciate the work and practice that was done to…

One of the most influential, and probably the most popular types of music is Rap. Rap music has its own stereotype of what it stands for. Many people think rap music is always about shooting cops, drugs, money and sex. Rappers use quick speaking rhyming sounds to aim for the urban ghetto and speaks of poverty, drugs, money, and fame. Many trends are also associated with rap music. For example, wearing baggy pants, gold chains, and violent…

Hip-hop music is to be considered to have been pioneered in South Bronx in New York in the late ‘70s by many different artistes. A young teen in Bronx has started to develop a brand of new music. He would soon to become known as Grandmaster Flash, a DJ that mastered and invented techniques like the back-spinning. Soon after a hip hop group has arisen with the name of Run-D.M.C. The chorus and title of the song was the main part of the reason why I decided to choose this song. For one Drake is one of my all time favorite music artists next to Lil Wayne. He motivates me to be who I am and puts me in a positive attitude with his creative lyrics. I chose this song because it shows how Drake wants to be successful in his life and how he keeps himself going to achieve his dreams. He pushes past the troubles in his life and all the hate everyone throws at him to do what he wants to do, produce music, as he is on pretty much every hip hop radio station and selling millions of albums every week, I would have to say he made it to where he wants to be.…
