Museum visit paper The piece of art I chose is “Landscape” (Garden at St. Tropez) by Henri Edmond Cross (French, 1856–1910) this piece was done in oil on canvas. This was Marjorie Tiefenthaler Bequest and partial gift of Louise Uihlein Snell Fund of the Milwaukee Foundation M1996.29. As I took my time walking around the Art Museum, it was very difficult for me to choose just one. Nonetheless when I saw The Garden at St. Tropez by Henri Edmond Cross, I was amaze at how well the painter placed each little dashes in the right place. I took the time to look over the whole painting and saw how each dash fit like a puzzle piece. I found it to be such a beautiful landscape to paint. I like that Cross picked an area that was more than just trees and plants. He found an area that looked to be welcoming to me. I found Cross’ painting to be different because it stood out to me. I believe it to be the style of texture that caught my eye. I am a big fan of natural surroundings; how other people view and the interpretation of it. The way Cross just knows where to put color and how to capture the sun light in the right area. I see that he even brings out the sun light’s brightness reflecting off this small building. I am not sure why he chose to make it so bright that you can barely recognize that image. It seems he wanted the natural light be a big focus in this painting yet, he is still able to include the beauty of the greenery of the area. Another feature of the piece was the stone driveway and stone hedge along the house. I feel like he took his time to place the right color dash to give a bright but yet natural look. Finally there are the flowers, I believe Cross’ painting would have been just as beautiful without them but, Cross adds just the amount without taking away from the rest of the landscape. To me Cross brought a little of each characteristic. The texture Cross uses makes me want to rub my fingers across the painting
