The classic research utilization project report indicates that research utilization is the process of systematically integrating the findings of completed nursing research studies into clinical nursing practice. In the process of research utilization, the emphasis is on using existing data from previous nursing research studies to modify a current nursing practice. Evidence-based practice is similar to research utilization in that it is a systematic method of applying research findings to nursing practice. However, evidence-based practice incorporates many additional sources of data that may contribute to improved nursing care. Evidence-based practice goes beyond nursing research in considering other sources of documentation that may improve nursing care. Research published by other disciplines is included, as well as nonresearch data that may contribute to practice (Zerwekh & Claborn, 2006).…

My knowledge in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) continues to expand as I progress through the program. As I reflect over the past eight weeks, I have a better understanding of the differences between a research and a Doctor of Nursing Project. Prior to the DNP II, I was not aware of a DNP project. I also learned about the purpose of a research and informed consent form prior to entering a research study. Scholarship is defined as learning but on a higher level. For the discipline of nursing, there are four aspects of scholarship written by Boyer (1990). These scholarships, the scholarship of knowing, teaching, practice, and service, are used in APN’s practice on a daily basis. Applying or integrating these four areas of scholarship have become an essential part of being an APN. The first of the scholarships is the scholarship of discovery (Peterson & Stevens, 2013). The APN uses the scholarship of discovery by conducting research and applying that research to take better care of patients. Next is the scholarship of teaching (Peterson & Stevens, 2013). This scholarship may be carried out by having a professional mentor that he/she can learn from in his/her practice. Scholarship of integration is the third scholarship introduced by Boyer (Peterson & Stevens, 2013). An example of this type of scholarship is when nursing convenes with other disciplines and collaborates on patient care. The final scholarship is the scholarship of application and it is used in the actual practice of nursing (Peterson & Stevens, 2013). The APN can consider the development of knowledge and evidence based practice as it applies to…
