In the Flintstones episode gravel berry pie king Fred Flintstone is approached by his fellow employees that want him to confront Mr. Slate requesting benefits and a raise in salary. Following Gazoo’s advice he speaks with Mr. Slate who suggests that he will compensate the other employees using the money that he will have now that Fred is no longer working there. Unable to tell Wilma about being fired, Fred goes to the park with the lunch Wilma has prepared for him, including a gravel berry pie, which impresses Mr. Safestone a wealthy venture capitalist and super market tycoon who happened to be in the park. Mr. Safestone wants to sell frozen gravel berry pies in bulk at his super markets, Fred pictures himself as an entrepreneur and the gravel berry pie king, and the two establish a “handshake deal”. Generating a partnership with Fred’s family and the Rubbles, they start planning on the first order of fifty frozen pies. Fred uses the advanced money to market himself as the gravel berry pie king and puts his picture dressed in a king’s robe and crown on every pie; he also assumes the responsibility to delegate the product layout, and the two families including the babies and pets manufacture the pies on an assembly line. They sell the first fifty pies and receive another order for five hundred more at forty cents each pie, Wilma calculates that there inventory is costing them twelve cents additional to make each pie. Without the means to outsource they will go bankrupt if they continue. When Fred discovers this undercapitalization, his moral changes, and his mission is to generate a profit. Fred takes this information to Mr. Safestone and taking Gazoo’s bad advice once again he proposes an increase far above what is needed, Mr. Safestone opts out of the deal. Fred is now left with five hundred frozen pies, using his marketing skills he creates a sign on the side of the road asking less than the original forty cents per pie, and he…

The wind howled around me like a pack of starving wolves as I entered the cemeteries rusty iron gates. Yet it seemed so wild and chaotic that it reminded me of home, so it didn’t bother me at all, I was used to it. My brother’s headstone was only a ten minute walk away so I let myself drink in the moonlight and the memories the cemetery held. I remembered the first time I went there with my mother, just after Jason died... She led me down the now familiar mud track past the eerie, dancing trees, to the spot she planned on burying him. And it wasn’t until I was standing in front of the headstone that I realized he was gone ; that was the first time I truly cried. I slowly walked down the pebbly path and admired the cherry blossoms that were flourishing around the graveyard. It was a cold Aprils night and it was going to be dark soon.…

What’s the one thing you should never do? Quit? Depends on who you talk to. Steal? Cheat? Eat food from a dented can? Myron Lufkin’s father, Abe, once told him never get your temperature taken at the hospital. Bring your own thermometer, he said; you should see how they wash theirs. He ought to have known; when he was at Yeshiva University he worked as an orderly in the hospital, slid patients around on gurneys, cleaned steelware. Myron knows all his father’s hospital stories and all his rules. On the other hand, there are things you should do. Always eat sitting down. Wear a hat in the rain. What else? Never let the other guy start the fight. Certain inviolable commandments. In thirty-two years Myron Lufkin had never seen his father without an answer. That is, until the day five years ago when Myron called home from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and told his father he had had enough, was quitting, leaving, kaput, he said. Now, Myron, living in Boston, sometime Jew, member of the public gym where he plays basketball and swims in the steamy pool after rounds, still calls home every other week. The phone calls, if he catches his father asleep, remind him of the day five years ago when he called to say that he was not, after all, going to be a doctor. It was not the kind of thing you told Abe Lufkin. Abe Lufkin, a man who once on Election Day put three twelve-pound chains across his chest and dove into San Francisco Bay at Aquatic Park, to swim most of the mile and threequarters across to Marin. As it turned out they had to pull him from the frothy cold water before he made the beach−but to give him credit, he was not on a young man. In the Chronicle the next day there was an inside page, sputtering and shaking on the sand, steam rising off his body. Rachel, Myron’s mother, is next to him in a sweater and baggy wool pants. Myron still has the newspaper clipping in one of his old butterfly display cases…
