Declining Sales When a business begins to suspect that their sales are declining it is a good idea to start a marketing campaign to research the problem and ultimately develop a solution. Declining sales is sometimes an unanticipated change that must be approached in a reactive way. It is most important to identify the problem clearly right from the beginning so that marketing efforts and money are not wasted, it is also important to identify the right research design to use to tackle the problem (Brown, 2014). In the situation of declining sales there are three types of research designs to consider. Exploratory research is the best place to a marketing campaign and especially when little is known about the root cause of the problem. Exploratory research is not designed to find an immediate answer to a problem but instead should be used to gain insight into the problem and develop ideas as in how to approach further research (Brown, 2014).

The three basic types of designs are exploratory, descriptive and casual research. In the explorative research there is systematic and flexible and allows the researcher to investigate desires (Marketing Research Design, 2012). While descriptive research describes and measure marketing phenomena at a point in time (Marketing Research Design, 2012). This type of research is classified as a cross sectional study, because it is a one-time measurement, which is established in market research, outnumbering longitudinal studies and casual studies (Marketing Research Design, 2012). Descriptive research seeks to describe the current status of an identified variable or phenomenon. The researcher does not usually begin with an hypothesis, but is likely to develop one after collecting data. Analysis and synthesis of the data provide the test of the hypothesis. Systematic collection of information requires careful selection of the units studied and measurement of each variable in order to demonstrate validity. Correlational research attempts to determine the extent of a relationship between two or more variables using statistical data. Relationships between and among a number of facts are sought and interpreted to recognize trends and patterns in data, but it does not go so far in its analysis to establish cause and effect for them. Data, relationships, and distributions of variables are observed only. Variables are not manipulated; they are only identified and are studied as they occur in a natural setting.…
