Fire Destroys House Miss Maudie Atkinson's house was destroyed in a deadly fire on December 15th. The first snowfall had fallen for the first time since 1885. School was cancelled for the day and the kids spent their day playing outside and building snowmen.

Early the next morning, at about 1:00 a.m., the neighborhood was ablaze. Everyone rushed outside to find Miss Maudie’s house on fire. The men of the neighborhood rushed to help get Miss Maudie and some of her precious items out. Shortly after, the fire truck arrived but the hose burst because it was too cold. Mr. Avery was saving items from the upstairs when the stairs burned out and he had to climb out the window. He fell into Miss Maudie's bushes. The fire became too ferocious to keep saving furniture so the men started backing away. The Abbottsville Fire Truck appeared shortly to put out the blaze. Even though her house had burned down, Miss Maudie was quoted saying that:

“I’ve always wanted to build a smaller house. Now I have the chance too.”

The cause of the fire was because Miss Maudie started a fire in the kitchen to warm up. No one was hurt in the fire except for Mr. Avery, who is going to be a little sore for a while, and Miss Maudie’s azaleas.

The fire was around a small barn belonging to the O'Leary family that surrounded an alley behind a street called Dekoven Street. The first building to be consumed by the fire was the shed next to the barn, but many city officials never determined the exact cause of the fire. Over the years there were speculations. The most popular speculation was Mrs. O’Leary’s cow; therefore, others suspect that a group of men were gambling inside the barn and knocked over a lantern. There were still others that suggested that the fire connected to other fires in the area that day.…

On April 3rd,, 1974, at 3:45 P.M., the bullhead City Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call, the shed (The old powder magazine) was on fire. A former Bullhead City Fire Chief Larry Adams says he can remember the details very vividly: “What I could see through the smoke is what appeared to be upholstery on the floor. When I got the pike pole, I stooped down to look under the smoke to hook this material and hook it out to extinguish it.”…

Did Mrs.O’Leary’s cow actually start the fire? Or did a comet or “pegleg” Sullivan? None of these did. The real cause was Louis M. Cohn. Why else would he admit to it? Why would he take the blame if the blame did not belong to him? So, the next time you consider that it may have been different cause, remember Louis M.…

Miss Maudie looks gaunt and old as she knows a lot about Maycombe’s past. She is first mentioned properly in Chapter 2 page 21: “Our activities halted when any of the neighbours appeared, and once I saw Miss Maudie Atkinson staring across the street at us, her hedge clippers poised in mid-air.” The impression this gives is that she is very much a menacing figure even though she looks weak.…

Similar to the woman in “Verses upon the burning of our house”, my house had a small fire ten years ago. In the fire I lost many prized possessions and a sense of home. In fact, my room had the most damage because the fire was right above me. My family and I felt lost, but as the time went on through the construction and renovation of my home, I was able to cope with our loss as I watched my parents in awe as they looked at this tragic event as something positive. They showed me to look on the bright side of things and never give up hope. In the poem “Verses upon the Burning of our House, July 10th 1666” Anne Bradstreet had a similar event when her house suddenly lit into flames in the middle of the night. Throughout the poem she learns to…
