* WHAT WE USE TO DECIDE: REASON So what goes into considering solutions? Three ingredients: We like to think we’re reasonable, logical people and that’s how we make decisions. * WHAT WE USE TO DECIDE: EMOTION How we feel about a decision, what we value, and how much we value it are inescapable to making decisions. WHAT WE USE TO DECIDE: COGNITION how people pay attention, remember, and think. Let’s see how all these combine into two major theories of decision-making.

Decision making Many Companies work in a professional manner and gives authority to take decisions But some Companies boasts about this and still have power with top boss and others should just follow what is told to do.     Before discussing the different ways a person can reach a decision, it is first necessary to know what decision making is. According to The Oxford English Dictionary decision making is, “The making up of one's mind on any point or on a course of action; a resolution, determination.” While the definition seems simple, the act of making up ones mind can be quite complicated. You need only look at my dorm room floor on a Saturday night before I go out, to see how difficult making a decision can be…at least for me. There are generally three ways that most people use to make decisions. The first being decisions based on whether. This type of decision making typically involves either/or and yes/no questions. For example, in deciding whether to have chocolate or vanilla ice cream, a person will often ask themselves a yes/no type of question, “Do I like chocolate better than vanilla?” Another example would be a person trying to decide about whether they should ask for a raise. In this instance the decision is usually reached after someone looks at the pros and cons to each side. The second kind are decisions based on which. In this instance, the person generally chooses one or more options from a larger group and makes their decision by determining which of these measures up to what one is looking for. The third type is contingent decisions. In contingent decisions a choice is often predetermined but is not acted upon until some kind of condition is met or an ideal opportunity arises.…

The Social Functionalist Approach is used in order to analyse the decision making structure (Leinhardt, 1977).     A general decision making criterion involves several factors. What this journal focuses on is the influence of others’ decisions on one’s own, namely, the act of “looking up and looking around”. In any given situation it is human nature to first “look up”- that is, see what a more knowledgeable person (such as the boss) is doing, and then take a decision as to how one would act. The second option is to “look around”- that is, see what one’s colleagues and peer are doing and follow suit. The author also writes on how “decision-making paralysis” hits everyone from middle range managers to even the top managers and CEO. When presented with a problem, the mind goes blank and the person the question is directed to is stuck in a rut. Either they don’t know how to solve the problem and are looking for someone else to take the burden; or they are apprehensive to make any decisions because they might fail. Many managers suffer severe anxiety that their incapability might be found out. That’s why senior managers are more preferred as they have a greater hold over making a decision based on their gut instinct. Decision-making is not only the manager’s headache, it also depends on the structure and progress of an organization. Many managers are pushed to make decisions within a short time, and that too decisions based on information passed on from the junior levels.
