Ms. Brown-Personal Narrative
I stare at the screen and then at Ms. Brown. I shake my head and bite my lip. She is not going ot make me explode. I’m a cool customer now. Everything I do and say is deliberate. My life is easier and safer when I do that.

“I’m not that guy anymore”, I finally say.

Ms. Brown gives a stern look. “Bullshit”, she says.

“It ain’t bullshit ma’am. The guy in that video was a stupid kid who spent all his time frothing at the mouth and not delivering in the ring.”

Well the way I see it”, Ms. Brown says,”Is that the man, if you want to call him that, who fought Cross Recoba a few weeks ago in Shreveport looked tentative.”

I should have expected her to say that, it’s a classic move that anybody trying to get a rise out of me will make. I’m not proud of my effort in Shreveport but did my damndest to win. I tell her as much.

Her response: laugh right in my face.

Why else would you not be able to keep him down for more than a one count? There was no energy or passion in your kicks. You may hate the guy you saw in that video but the rage he, you, channeled hurt people. Fire in your soul is not a bad thing, James. I thought that perhaps being belligerent about the contract would piss you off enough to rekindle whatever burned in your heart. That was a dumb move on my part because it almost derailed the meeting. The truth is the League doesn’t care if you are exclusive to us or not. All we ask is that you show up and help us put asses in the seats. If you do that you are free to do whatever the hell you want when you are not on our

This topic became apparent after every fight in which Cam was knocked to the ground and every time he got right back up and continued he never gave up, and also in the quote “I walk with Rube and Bumper on either side of me...the blood is drying on my skin. My legs move forward. Once more...just keep walking, I tell myself. Head up. Head up, I chant, but still concentrate on y’feet. Don’t fall down.” Cameron says this after he is knocked unconscious during a fight. This shows that even though he didn’t win the fight physically he won it mentally. He left the ring with all he had left. His pride.…

My maternal grandmother Shirley Rae Harrington grew up during World War Two. But despite the war, she lived a somewhat normal childhood. When she was young there were very few other children in the area to play with and her younger sister, Sissy, was paralyzed. So she often played by herself in a stream nearby. Her family also owned several horses, chickens, pigs and a billy goat. Surprisingly she didn't get into much trouble as a child, except once when her family was down in our properties Maryland. People were racing speedboats in the creek, so she asked a neighbor who her family knew if she could go. He said yes and took her in his own boat when they got back her parents were fine but Mimi was upset with her. Her first travel experience…

It was a casual August afternoon in Minneapolis, people walking the down the sidewalk, strangers passing by. We were visiting my old hometown. I was walking with Beth, and we were messing around. I used to have an inside joke with one of my friends from fifth grade, “Girl you need to chill.” It stuck once I moved. Anyway, Beth had just told me to chill, so, I walked into the nearest cold building. Which of course, ended up being a meat locker… 15 minutes later I was coming out and saw an all too familiar pair of square glasses. Before I could see her face, she turned away. Her bleached tip hair swung across her shoulders. The dark skin, the hair and glasses, it had to be Miracle Brown. This is the girl who was one of my best friends in sixth grade. She started heading down the street, so I told Beth to meet me back at our hotel.…

He was living in New York, in the district known as “Hell’s Kitchen”, the roughest place there. Twenty-three, and the most infamous boxer anyone had heard of. He wasn’t one of the rules-and-regulations league fighters; He fought dirty. He didn’t known any other way. Known as the most brutal, bloodthirsty fighter to appear in decades, he was a favourite for the savage audiences. The scariest thing about him wasn’t that he had no qualms about breaking arms, or even that one time he gouged out a man’s eye. It was that Ben simply didn’t mind getting hit. With his abusive drunk of a father, who was intent on beating Ben within an inch of his life, he was plenty used to being hit.…
