Mrs Dunlap Reflection
By far, one of the best teachers I have ever had in all of my years of school, has been my eighth grade English teacher, Mrs. Dunlap. Before I had her class, I enjoyed English, and I enjoyed reading, but I still had struggles with it, and I was not that passionate about it. All of that changed, however, when Mrs. Dunlap was my English teacher. She was someone who truly cared about the subject that they taught- She was invested in every single piece of literature that she taught us, she explained grammar in a way that made it fun (For me, at least), and she was attentive to the learning needs of each and every student. One of my favorite things that Mrs. Dunlap did was independent novel projects. She would assign us a period of three weeks to read a book of our choice. During these three weeks, we read the book, completed a card that went into detail about every main character, and then we would complete an assignment on the book in class when the three weeks was over. I heard all of my classmates complain endlessly about these projects, and I rarely heard of a peer who actually …show more content…
Dunlap, telling her about ourselves, and we were required to list something that we loved to do. I explained to her that I loved to write and read, and that when I was older I wanted to become an author. She never commented to us individually about these letters, but she always challenged me in my writing, helping me to pursue what I loved. My five paragraph essay skills began and excelled with her, which we all know is a skill that one will need for their whole lives (Or so I think (And do not exactly hope)). I will always, always brag, without any stifling of pride whatsoever, the time that Mrs. Dunlap anonymously used my essay on The Outsiders as the example of what our essays should look like for the whole class. I loved writing before my final year of middle school, and I only continue to love it

Growing up reading and writing has always been a part of my life; you could always catch my mom sitting in her chair with a book by her favorite author in her hand. I’ll always remember the day that she read a play to me, she was never into theatre as a kid but she read it as if she had been on Broadway. I think that is where my love for reading as well as theatre first started, just watching her so focused and completely into a book. It always amazed me and to this day it still does. I’ve also had some amazing teachers throughout my school years. Have you ever had those teachers who would do anything in the world for you? The teachers who just made you so excited to learn? I know that I have a few; they are the ones that you could never forget. From my English teachers to my theatre teachers, they have all made a difference in my life. I know that it sounds crazy that theatre ties in with all of this, but it does in so many ways.…

My name is Grace Arvesen and I am currently a sophomore at Marist High School. When I think of great teachers, although I’ve had many, one comes to mind right away. Her name is Colleen Biszewski and was my 7th and 8th grade math and science teacher at Queen of Martyrs School. Not only did Mrs. Biszewski prepare us academically, but she helped us practice good Christian values. In addition, she was accessible for all students, treating everyone with fairness.…

In my last 15 years of school I’ve had many good teachers as well as bad teachers, but none of them compare to my football coach/computer teacher Mr. Pasch. Mr. Pasch not only taught me a lot about computers and football, but also much more about life. Mr. Pasch taught me that quitters never win, that when you quit the first time it will be easier to quit again and for the rest of your life you will always quit when it gets hard. Mr. Pasch installed in me his discipline, respect and motivation.…

As the school cleared out in an incredible 7 minutes, teachers and few students were left in the school gathering their things. We stopped in a Language Arts teacher’s class. The teacher, Mrs. Kelly Pederson, who looked as if she was going to rip all of her hair out and possibly already got a head start, gladly spoke to us not only about her IB students but about her 9th grade students as well.…

There are two things that stand out most about Mrs. Carrie’s teaching when I look back. First, is her reward system for when we were practicing our spelling words. Mrs. Carrie would call on a student and if you were able to spell the word correctly she would let you get a scoop of Lucky Charms. The other thing I remember in great detail was an assignment we had to do for Thanksgiving. We had to write a short story about Thanksgiving…

In Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott,” the eponymous Lady is cursed to spend her life alone, weaving in the top of a tower, with a mirror as her only window to the outside world. Though she is trapped against her will, “in her web she still delights / to weave the mirror’s magic sights”. Into her endless tapestry, she weaves in all the images shown to her in the mirror, such as funerals, weddings, and the people who pass by on the road to Camelot. This creation of art is her only pleasure in life. However, after what is implied to be years of isolation, she becomes “half sick of shadows” and loses her artistic passion. At the chance passing of Lancelot, she cannot bear it any longer and leaves her weaving to look out and see the world for what it really is, bringing about her own death in the process. The Lady does not die for her love of Lancelot, who just happened to catch her interest at that moment, but for her love of life and the world, which she could not experience and, therefore, could not recreate in any way that did it justice in her mind.…

To begin with, I am very thankful to Mrs. Larson, my high school teacher in 12th grade from Visions In Education independent school. She was a very awesome teacher and I can say that if it wasn’t for her support and her motivation for helping me motivate myself I don’t know if I were to obtain my high school diploma in 2010. She has influenced me in a great way. For example, she would keep me going by laughing and talking about an interesting topic just to keep me encouraged and focus on my school duties. Furthermore, she is a dedicated teacher who will continue to monitor my work in school in order for me to be consistent in my writing in English. Lastly, Mrs. Larson is a good coach on my English and reading that she would even slow down and be super patient in order for me to comprehend on my reading and writing materials. I can even go to her for personal and educational counseling. In the end, Mrs. Larson was a great mentor to me through out my last year in high school, and for her support today, I believe that I have become a better reader and writer.…

Looking back on my education, there are plenty of teachers that I felt were effective in getting me to learn material, but I will mention just two. Teacher A was my 8th grade and 10th grade math teacher. He didn’t necessarily make math easier in any way, but he made math much more fun because you looked forward to going to his class. Teacher A always used simple jokes, often requiring a very dry humor, which made me constantly pay attention in class so I could catch his different jokes. He also had the ability to demand respect in his class without ever really enforcing anything. He was simply such an amazing teacher that everyone respected his class and no one ever acted up. Teacher B, my 8th grade science teacher, also had a big impact on my education for the better. I enjoyed going to her classes because she was able to connect with me and a few of my friends on more of a personal level. She took an interest in our lives and made sure we were all on the path toward better futures. She, unlike Teacher A, demanded respect in her classroom in more of an authoritative way. Her students knew that if they acted up, she would not skip a beat to send them to the office, resulting in very few problems.…

One name in particular stands firm among others and that is Mr. Jesse L. Barrett. Mr. Barrett was my English II Honors teacher my sophomore year in high school. Sadly, he was only my English teacher for one year. I honestly could not have asked for a better teacher. At the same time as making me smile and laugh, he ultimately helped me to be successful in life. Initially, I did not enjoy English as much anymore due to a bad string of teachers who lectured endlessly on random topics other than English. He changed my outlook on life and helped me regain my passion for English. Mr. Barrett motivated me to not settle for mediocre work and to do my absolute best in anything I strived for. I never imagined that I would encounter a teacher that was as meticulous as Mr. Barrett. Everything he did had a specific place and order. He never accepted late work because we were in an honors class that required you to be punctual. This taught me how to be prompt, a skill that will help when I attend college next fall.…

The moment I found myself sitting at my desk, confused and shocked at the grade I had been given. Being the egotistical brat I was at the time, my first thoughts were “This has to be a mistake, an obvious mistake.” I waited for the end of class, fidgeting in my seat every second, all the while reassuring myself that I could sort everything out. Finally, the bell rang loudly and after the rest of the students had shot out of their seat and headed for the door, I stood and walked over to her desk and politely inquired about my essay. She quickly looked over the first two pages then handed me back the essay with little enthusiasm. “Your writing skills need some work. You were going off subject quite a bit”, she informed me. With an ego my size, even the smallest of criticism hit me hard. I nodded and realized that I still had so much to work on, but I was oddly confident this teacher could help me. Mrs. Hoer was her name, and I began to respect her more than any English teacher I had prior. She showed me how writing is far more than just sitting down at home and trying to think of something profound that will impress a teacher. I learned that language can have endless meaning and give so much enjoyment for readers who take the time to analyze literature. Questioning an author’s credibility and their reason for writing a particular piece were things I had never been asked to do until her English class. Throughout my senior year in high school I learned more than I ever had in the class with her. The concept I had of how easy English was became shattered, and I found myself being far more open to new ideas and styles or writing. If I had not been transferred into AP English that year, I may have never gotten over myself, and would have never progressed as far as I…
