In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury uses character development to support the theme of the importance of knowledge versus ignorance of knowledge. The knowledge books contain is ignored by society because of strict laws that prohibit people from reading books, and requires the burning of books. The law also influences people to ignore the knowledge contained in books with the hope of creating an equal society. Throughout the novel Guy Montag transforms through his interactions with others and self-realization to support the theme of the importance of knowledge versus ignorance of knowledge. He changes from a man who burns books, to one who enjoys and sees the value in them.…

Ralph Terry may be best known for giving up the home run to Bill Mazeroski in 1960 that allowed the Pittsburg Pirates to win the World Series, but many fail to see that he was also the MVP in the 1962 World Series and went on to have a great career in the golf world. The book Right Down the Middle written by Ralph Terry himself along with John Wooley writes out Ralph’s life from growing up in Oklahoma as a child up to him being a professional golfer on the Senior PGA Tour. The book also gives a very neat perspective as to what the overall baseball system was like and how the Yankees operated during their “Golden Age” of baseball. Over the course of this review I will give some of the stories that I thought were interesting and for the first story I will write about the way contracts were debated…

In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr argues that our ability to focus and think critically is hindered and the Internet appears to be the cause. Carr conveys the thought that people who use the Internet on a daily basis tend to have a lack of concentration and lack of contemplation. He shows this through studies, his personal experiences and through other methods.…

I chose to watch the Ted Talk on “My Stroke of Insight” by Jill Bolte Taylor. I found this video interesting. Ms. Taylor had a hemorrhage that caused her to have a brain of an infant. To further explain, Ms. Taylor lost all of her knowledge including her speech, cognitive skills and so on. I thought it was amazing how someone could be a grown adult, but then have brain trauma and it is like they are a baby again. Then to see Ms. Taylor standing and talking to the audience amazes me. How does someone make a drastic change like that?…

Carr uses a very effective method while writing his persuasive essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Carr clearly explains how he is in favor of how the Internet is making us thing and how the Internet is making us think differently. Carr pulls from various credible sources such as professors and studies in order to back up his theory on the Internet. Carr opens with an example from Space Odyssey and ends on the same example, which ties the essay up nicely. He explains how our brains can become wired differently due to the way we receive or write information, such as the alphabet in relation to Chinese ideographs. He pulls from credible professors and studies to back up his claims. Carr also talks about what the future may hold for the Internet and us in terms of search engines. His layout is his ideas, research or studies that back it up, and then the why or how of the idea. He does this multiple times in his essay, which makes it a convincing, well-written essay. Carr also appears well versed on the essay topic and cites credible sources as well, which helps making it more convincing. He also didn’t focus on one idea or theory to do with the Internet he made other claims that made the essay well rounded and helped keep the readers attention. He also uses hyperboles in order to stress his points; he references the term “Pancake people” which illustrates the way our culture is changing due to the Internet. He also uses a phrase along the lines of I used to be a scuba diver now I’m a jet skiing in the world of knowledge and reading. He paints a vivid picture and effectively communicates his ideas. The argument he presented made me think about how past technology has affected the way we think and how we receive our information. While I agree with the points he is making I do believe his ideas are a bit drastic. Carr debusses the fact he is a bit paranoid and I agree with that, I also appreciate the…

Summary of Thomas Pain's Common Sense Thomas Pain believed strongly in supporting the colonies for colonial independence. "The sun never shined on a cause of greater worth," says Thomas Pain. He believed that not only the country should be involved but of at least 1/8 part of the globe. He illustrates in his article that a new era for politics has struck which leads to a new method of thinking. Pain also shows that reconciliation with Britain is not the answer. He states that America will flourish as much or more without Britain. Pain also illustrates how people think that Britain is protecting them. He responds saying that Britain was only thinking of Britain's own interest instead of thinking of the interests of the colonies. Pain concludes in his article four of why they must show their declaration for independence. First he states that Britain and the Colonies may quarrel forever. Secondly he states that France and Spain want help the colonies unless they rebel and fight. Thirdly he states that they should be considered rebels and unite to fight the British. Fourthly they will send out to foreign courts published documents that state miseries that they have endured and the peaceful methods they used in…
