Dr Javed Iqbal, Assistant professor Faiqa Tayyab, MS scholar Samreen Farmanullah, MS scholar Naheed Yousaf Khan, MS scholar

Faculty of Management Sciences, Sector H-10, International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to review the selected literature on contemporary issues in HRM. For this purpose the researchers surveyed literature from 2007 to 2011. The aim is to look into key issues the HR encounters today or the areas in focus. It is found that the nature of HR is still under consideration in HR research i.e. to discuss the theoretical foundations of the subject: what is it and what is not. Since HR climbed to strategic level recently which compels managers to think globlly (for the entire organization) rather than locally (at the departmental level). So strategic HR is in the focus. The HR research is associated with well known research network ‘cranet’; a significant research is linked with it. And country as well as continent level policies are studied to learn from the experience of others for formulation and implementation batter practices. The main conclusions from this report are that in order to improve its profile within the company HR needs to become more strategic in its approach. “In the recent time human resource management (HRM) has assumed new prominence because of continuing concerns about global competition, the internationalisation of technology and the productivity of labour. It is argued that these market imperatives require manager to change the way in which they manage the employment relationship in order to allow for the most effective utilization of human resources (HR). Managers and academics argue that the traditional approaches to managing workers are inappropriate and ‘can no longer deliver the goods’ (Betcherman et al., 1994, p. 2). Harnessing workers’ full potential and producing the attitudes and behaviour considered necessary for a competitive advantage require three aspects of managerial control to change: organisational design, culture, and HR policies and practice. Current managerial orthodoxy therefore argues the need for a restructuring towards ‘flat’ hierarchical structures, an enlargement of job tasks with greater employee autonomy and managerial leadership to shape the more intangible aspects of the workplace, for examples beliefs, norms and values.” (Bratton and Gold, 2003, p. 4)…

The challenges of HRM in any organization can be analysed under its five functions Staffing, Human Resources Development, Compensation, Safety & Health and Employee Relations. Outside these functions there are also challenges that come with other environmental factors. These factors can be within the organization or can be external factors that can be political, economic, societal, unpredictable events and legal considerations For only looking at the internal dimensions and ignoring the external human resource practitioners deserve a D grade or poor grade(Kaufman 2012).…

Within the following essay, the three main Strategic approaches in Human Resource Management will be named and explained. Due to its complexity giving a detailed definition of HRM would significantly extend the report. Instead, a rather shallower one by D. Torrington, L. Hall and S. Taylor in the seventh edition of their Human Resource Management (2008): They state that “On the one hand it is used generically to describe the body of management activities” and continue that; “Used in this way HRM is really no more than a more modern and supposedly imposing name for what has long been labelled ‘personnel management’.”. They finally argue that; “On the other hand, the term is equally widely used to denote a particular approach to the management of people which is clearly distinct from ‘personnel management’. Used in this way ‘HRM’ signifies more than an updating of the label; it also suggests a distinctive philosophy towards carrying out people-orientated organizational activities”.…

Human Resources are the important resources of an organization. If an organization doesn’t have this, for sure it would not be effective and successful even if they have its other resources. It is because Human resources are the people who work in the organization. These people work for various jobs, tasks and functions of an organization. These people are employed to work on the organization in exchange with wages and salaries. And these people are selected carefully and trained hard by the Human Resource Management to maintain their qualification as an employee.…
